Going caffeine free: want to join me?

myidentitymycrisis · 18/11/2018 00:58

I’m going to try and do something proactive about my menopausal symptoms. I can’t get motivated to exercise at the moment so thought I’d begin with diet.

Tomorrow I am going cold turkey. I’ve done it before and expect a bad headache. If anyone wants to join in we can offer each other moral support.

Oh definitely. I’m doing it for menopause plus I have mild tinnitus which gets worse when I have coffee.

Problem is I love cappuccinos and don’t know what to replace it with?

IfyouseeRitaMoreno · 18/11/2018 01:01

My headache usually kicks in after 3 days and I cave Blush

I'll join you from tomorrow! I love coffee but I've noticed it's giving me terrible sweats so need to stop. I'll replace it with green tea from tomorrow..!

myidentitymycrisis · 18/11/2018 13:55

I’m going to stop coffee first (today).

How has it gone?

I'd rather go for a few runs/ day than give up my daily cuppa :).

RedRoseReb · 18/11/2018 17:47

I am cutting out coffee and making herbal teas regularly to replace (some) tea. I have begun to make it in a pot so I refill and have more than one cup.

I'm not sure I can reach caffeine free!

myidentitymycrisis · 19/11/2018 13:42

I had one tea yesterday and no coffee. Today one tea first thing and then moved onto rooibos. I had a bad headache last night and this morning but 2 paracetamol has taken care of it today.

I usually have one strong coffee in the morning for breakfast before work.

If cutting out coffee is managable I might drop the tea in a couple of weeks.

I already have a shocking headache on day one! I do love coffee.. I work from home on my laptop all day drinking coffee which I know is bad for me. Staying strong, just boiled the kettle for a green tea. I'd have gone for a run to if we didn't have gale force winds here today!!

RedRoseReb · 19/11/2018 14:44

I use Pukka tea bags and pretend I'm really enjoying the treat!

I'll report back if the brainwashing is successful!

RedRoseReb · 19/11/2018 14:55

Good luck op.

I did this a while back and my sleep improved vastly, so i do want to keep going and make it a longer lasting change.

QueenoftheNights · 19/11/2018 17:55

I had to give up tea and coffee due to overactive bladder/ IC and have not touched a drop for years and years. Once you get used to it, it's fine.

I drink chamomile tea , mint tea, and hot water with a sliver of lemon.

Teapigs are good quality and use the real flowers/ herbs not the left over dust that is in most herbal tea bags.

myidentitymycrisis · 19/11/2018 22:05

Two days without coffee now. The real test will be tomorrow morning when I have to get ready for work.

OP posts:
RedRoseReb · 20/11/2018 10:34

I was going to buy some teapigs as another treat!

It helps to ring the changes.

myidentitymycrisis · 20/11/2018 19:43

Day 3 no coffee, I think I’m noticing a difference in my anxiety. Sleep still terrible

OP posts:
RedRoseReb · 20/11/2018 19:50

Well done.
I've avoided coffee though I had too many black teas.
I'm going to try a warm bath tonight to wind down.

I noticed that on the better nights I still wake up but with less anxiety I drop back off to sleep rather than lying awake or even giving up and getting up for an hour.

whynot93 · 20/11/2018 20:04

My sleep last night wasn't good either! I was awake by 4 and I've been up ever since.. green tea is ok but I think I might need to try something else.

RedRoseReb · 20/11/2018 20:08

4am is the waking hour!

Glowerglass · 20/11/2018 20:09

I have almost given up. It was giving me hot flushes. I have the occasional diet coke but almost completely free. It has helped.

ragged · 20/11/2018 20:17

black tea or green tea each have about half the caffeine of coffee (as typically made). So 2 teas = 1 coffee. Lots of tea = as much caffeine as some coffee.

I'm drinking Diet Pepsi which is nice, zero wine or gin to 🙌 I'm hoping I can ride it out and see light at the end of the tunnel in a week or two.. the hot flushes have been horrendous so I have to try something!!

AwkwardSquad · 20/11/2018 20:29

I stopped drinking coffee earlier this year. March, I think. I have a couple of cups of tea in the morning, then herb tea for the rest of the day. I’d already cut caffeine down a lot so didn’t get headaches, and actually didn’t find it as hard as I thought I would.

I cut it out to see if it would improve my digestion and reduce irritable bladder, and I’m very pleased to say that it worked!

AwkwardSquad · 20/11/2018 20:30

And I’m calmer, too.

Lucylugs · 20/11/2018 20:31

I drink barley cup granules (not powder) made very strong with frothy milk as a coffee replacement and rooiboo with milk instead of tea.

hendricksy · 20/11/2018 21:26

I went caffeine free months ago.. I feel much better although I miss it .. remembering and not accidentally having a coke when you are in a restaurant can be tricky but I'm well over the hump .
