Is this perimenopause?

My periods are still regular although can be extremely heavy but I have been getting hot and woozy on occassion and last night I woke up drenched in sweat, my nightie was literally soaking. Do you think this could be a sign of perimenopause? I am 41.

yes Smile

MrsMadWriggle · 02/10/2010 00:55

Of fuckity fuck. That'll be me too then

sharbie · 02/10/2010 00:59

bring it on i say, i am 44 and no sign of it here yet

SoMuchToBits · 02/10/2010 01:00

I haven't had the hot and sweaty stuff, but have had irregular periods for the last few months (since July). They seem light, but on and off all the time, so you never know what is happening. Had one sudden gush (totally unexpectedly, had to go home to change) and then a few small drips, but at random intervals.

SoMuchToBits · 02/10/2010 01:01

I'm 48 btw

MrsMadWriggle · 02/10/2010 01:04

44 here.
Somuch - I've also been having problems with the gushing/flooding thing. Might be worth going to see your GP - I'm on tranexamic acid which helps with clotting if that's your problem. Apparently the Mirena Coil can also help.

drywhiteplease · 19/10/2010 21:47

Oh my God!
I am 43 1/2 and recently a friend told me i was "angry"! This prompted much reflection. Am I depressed/stressed or just a normal parent? It is true I feel like I have PMT most of the time (which is horrible because I have always been a very happy positive person),since having my children my periods are really heavy...but I can explain it all away...I've always been hot in bed (both senses of course!) and then there's the odd hair on my chin (eek!)and I AM TOO YOUNG FOR THE M! But could it be it? And what is to be done? I don't mind the physical stuff but I want happy me back.

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 19/10/2010 21:52

I have trouble sleeping and have done for a year, have erratic periods - one every two weeks for a while, then go 10 or 12 weeks without one, some very heavy some very light Am juts 50 so I suppose this is it!!

purplepeony · 19/10/2010 22:21

Yep - sure is.

Not fancy HRT?

WhatsWrongWithYou · 19/10/2010 22:23

I last had a period in May so I'm kind of assuming that's me done. (Am 47).

WynkenBlynkenandNod · 19/10/2010 22:26

I'm 41 and sometimes get the nightsweats plus much heavier periods. I find it hard to sleep sometimes and am definitely on the volatile side. oh and I go through phases of my hair falling out and I keep forgetting things. Speaking to friends I came to the conclusion I am definitely perimenopausal.

shabbadabbadingdong · 19/10/2010 22:26

Thought I was starting with the menopause when I was 40 - but turned out it was DS4 LOL!!

If you have a simple blood test it will tell you if you are starting with the menopause. Think if you are under 50 you have to wait two clear years of periods before it is 'safe' LOL. I am almost 54 and havent had a period for 2 and a half years. I had a 'yes I cant get pregnant' party at my friends when 2 years passed LOL.

purplepeony · 20/10/2010 10:27

Whatswrong you might be wishing too soon.
You have to wait at least 2years if you are under 50 to be able to say That's it.
I have friends their early 50s who have had gaps of almost a year then periods come back.
I have had 3 after the age of 53 , up to age 55. Gynae investigated as there was a gap of almost 2 years.

WhatsWrongWithYou · 20/10/2010 13:04

Thanks - actually, I haven't had any night sweats so maybe this is still at the peri stage.

duchessofgwae · 17/12/2010 18:00

I'm glad to put a name onto these things - sweating at night, ANGRY woman, absent mind - phew. 46 and relieved I'm "normal"!

blackeyedsusan · 19/12/2010 00:56

ditto, MrsMadWriggle.
didn't occur to me til I heard an article on the radio. worried now because I am still broody. Fuck.

kittya · 19/12/2010 01:15

Im 42 and havent had any night sweats BUT Im so bloody emotional all the time, like permanent pms. I forget things all the bloody time and my periods are very heavy but, like clockwork still. As for the hair falling out, is that a symptom? am I peri then? will I get my memory back? I used to retain such trivia!!

wendihouse22 · 19/12/2010 14:17

I had Mirena coil for heavier periods. It drove me bonkers. Yes periods as such almost stopped but.....every other week I'd have a light light period. Completely buggered up my sex life as feslt most unattractive!!

Also, gained excess weight. I had it removed. Would rather just have a period, albeit heavy, and have done with it.

I wouldn't touch it again!

wendihouse22 · 19/12/2010 14:18

Forgot to say.....I'm 48 now. Now night sweats but periods getting irregular as in shorter cycle.

Also, feel utterly knackered.

BellaMagnificat · 12/01/2011 18:55

Am 44. usually have a five week ish cycle. Suddenly started to have 3 week cycles this year. Flow and duration about the same.

Even so my (female) GP said with a grin' Welcome to perimenopause'. I just thought they got further and further apart, then the flushing and mood swings and stuff.

Who knew? Blush

BellaMagnificat · 12/01/2011 18:59

Oh, yes, and the stray eyebrows on my chin. That really freaked me at first even though I am a fairly happy hairy person normally.

Legs usually so hairy should be crosslegged in the forest, playing my panpipes....

BellaMagnificat · 12/01/2011 19:00

Also, I started late ( nearly 15 then very irregular) thought this would mean menopause would be later - but apparently not?

Anyone know?

cabbageroses · 12/01/2011 19:10

Bella- it varies so much. Many women's cycles get shorter first then longer gaps much further down the line- eg a period 2-3 times a year.

Also, a late start does not equal alate finish! A late start can mean you are not very fertile, or that you haven't many eggs- blah blah.....

don't worry- nothing you can do about it all!

BellaMagnificat · 12/01/2011 21:17

Thanks Cabbage.

I think now (at 44) I would have had probs had I tried to conceive and regret all the worry and precautions and messing with my cycle I took as a young woman which may have been so unnecessary. But hindsight is wonderful.

Also for women trying so hard to conceive it must seem so ironic that what they scared you with at school actually does not happen as easily for some as it may be made out.

My periods are all over the place at the moment. In the last year I have had gaps of 2 to 3 months. Than I went back to once a month for a while. Than shock of a huge one two weeks after last one. At one point got through a super tampon and nightime towel in just over an hour. Feeling really run down now. I am 41 btw.
Also not sleeping too well. is this the start of the end?
