Hi I have been on mumsnet for a few months now but never actually been in touch with other mumsnetters, I will be moving to wakefield soon and am definately looking for other mums to chat to and meet up with, but not quite sure how this site works....

itsahardknocklife · 21/02/2008 11:12

I found the site a bit confusing at first, gem, but you get the hang of it.
Whereabouts are you moving from?

gem86 · 21/02/2008 11:14

We live in Drighlington at the moment, so not moving too far. I did grow up in Wakefield but i dont know any mums back there and it feels quite scary, I have a 13 month old and feel settled here and she has just settled in nursery too very scary

itsahardknocklife · 21/02/2008 11:15

Well we are a nice bunch - and there are several kiddies about your child's age, so don't worry to much. Lots of us are from elsewhere - I moved up here from London last summer.
Do you know whereabouts in Wakefield you are moving to?

gem86 · 21/02/2008 11:17

Yes its not an ideal situation but me my dh and dd are going to be moving in with my parents for a little while in calder grove, how old are your lo's?

itsahardknocklife · 21/02/2008 11:21

My son is just coming up to 16 months old. We live in central Wakefield, near to Pinderfields.
I still don't know the area very well - I know the name Calder Grove but don't know where it actually is

gem86 · 21/02/2008 11:26

its just off the M1 near ceder court hotel not too far from asda. Do you work? does your son go to nursery/ childminder? I need to find a good nursery

itsahardknocklife · 21/02/2008 11:33

oh I know - we often go to Asda. I do work, but I am off sick at the moment. My son goes to a childminder two days a week. I'm afraid I don't know any of the nurseries around here but I am sure some of the other ladies will know when they are around later.
What do you do for work?

gem86 · 21/02/2008 11:36

I gave up my customer service job when dd was born to be sahm however by the time she was 1 i felt i was loosing my mind, so have just got a part time job at mama's and papa's to get my sanity back. I am going to apply for college in september I want to train to be a primary school teacher, how about you?

itsahardknocklife · 21/02/2008 11:44

I'm a teacher

gem86 · 21/02/2008 11:47

cool, which school do you work at? a local one? im not sure I have the right qualifications to get on the course I want to do so might take even longer to get there but will do it eventually, o how I wish I had stayed at college and done my A levels, but I guess i wouldnt have dd then...

itsahardknocklife · 21/02/2008 11:54

I work at a special school in Crofton.
You need a degree to do teacher training, I believe, or you can do a degree that gives you a teaching qualification. If you haven't got A-levels or the suchlike to get into a uni course, you could do an access course at college. My ex did one as he wanted to do an art degree (which he has now completed) and he really enjoyed his access course.

gem86 · 21/02/2008 11:57

yeah I have found a foundation degree course at wakefield college, which says you need something like a betec or diploma in play work, but mature students dont need formal qualifications, so fingers crossed I will be ok. I think im going to look to volunteer in a school one day a week so i at least have some experience

itsahardknocklife · 21/02/2008 12:00

sounds like a good course - you go for it! The experience will be great and will be taken into account when you apply for teaching jobs.
How about applying for a learning support assistant or classroom assistant job? Then you would get the experience and get paid too. That's how I started off.

gem86 · 21/02/2008 12:03

yeah I had thought of that and working to wakefield that may work, however where we are at the moment, you need an NVQ to get paid classroom assistant work, do you just work 2 days a week? do you have any plans for another baby yet?

itsahardknocklife · 21/02/2008 13:04

look in the local paper for LSA and CA jobs - you don't usually need a formal qualification for them.
I should be working full time but I'm off sick at the mo. My other half is a stay at home dad.
No plans for another baby yet - he is more than enough for us at the moment! We need to sort out our housing situation before we think about having another baby!

hi gem - welcome to the thread! I live in Midgley, near to where Knickers lives. There are a lot of decent nurseries in Wakefield. My DS goes to the 0-3 unit at St Hilda's in Horbury. A very good one in wakefield itself is College Grove (near to Pinderfields).

itsahardknocklife · 21/02/2008 14:45

Oh god I really like David and Carrie's Popshop on Cbeebies. I think I need help!
Dennis is really getting into In The Night Garden!

HeppyChick · 21/02/2008 15:32

Afternoon ladies, welcome Gem86 and mamfa1. I have 3 DS, latest one is almost a year. I live in Flockton. You'll have to try the next meet-up.

itsahardknocklife · 21/02/2008 16:18

which is tomorrow! 10.30 at Cheeky Monkeys.

Mamfa1 · 21/02/2008 16:23

Thanks itsahardknocklife and NorwichMummy. I have a little girl who's 13 weeks old now. Would like to get out and about a bit. Do you go to mother and baby groups if so which ones. I live in Birdwell so might be near to you. Could you let me know if you're going to meet up at any point.

itsahardknocklife · 21/02/2008 17:22

I don't go to any baby groups at the mo. My OH used to when he was at home, but he's working now. I went once and didn't like it!
We are meeting tomorrow at 10.30 at Cheeky Monkeys - well Knickers and I are anyway - you are most welcome to join us.

HeppyChick · 21/02/2008 17:26

Can't make tomorrow unfortunately, but will be at the JB one next Wednesday...

itsahardknocklife · 21/02/2008 17:28
