2015 January Low Carb Bootcamp - the questions thread!

BIWI · 18/01/2015 19:24

Evening all!

I'm setting up this thread this evening, because I have to be up and out early tomorrow morning.

So, here is the thread for you to ask any questions that you might have about low carbing.

The chat thread tends to move really quickly in the first couple of weeks, so if you post questions on there you're not always guaranteed to get an answer, as it just might not be spotted. So use this thread to post any questions.

Is anyone still getting dizzy feeling. I am eating plenty of avocados, spinach and have upped my salt intake. Maybe I should buy a supplement?

ChippingInLatteLover · 28/01/2015 00:05

BIWI. Afford you?? I'm confused? I wasn't planning on paying you?! You'd have my beautiful spare room, internet connection and ME.

BIWI · 28/01/2015 08:49

Any top tips for when the sweet craving comes?

Normally when I'm dieting I have low cal hot choc but the carbs are high so what should I be buying?

BIWI · 28/01/2015 11:23

NO!

We are trying to break the hold over us that sweet things have.

Honestly. Do something else. Go for a walk. Eat a piece of cheese. But don't, don't, don't give in. It will get easier, I promise, but only if you're strong now.

Fatstacks · 28/01/2015 11:25

OK!

Because I trust you implicitly and don't even google stuff now in case they dare contradict you.

Thank you Grin

Perfect description.

Fatstacks. She who is currently packing her bags to move into mine (yay!!) is telling the truth. Honest. It's one of the things I love about low carbing, once you've adapted. No longer being the lion. Having the gazelle napping with it's head in your lap and being happy with that. It will happen, you just have to be strong though these few days and you'll get there. Those things look tempting, but they'll undo your hardwork :(

BeyondDoesBootcamp · 28/01/2015 12:59

L - pate on celery

ChesterDrawers · 28/01/2015 13:07

Fatstacks try a little bit of vanilla extract (no sugar though) or cinnamon in full fat Greek yoghurt. Honestly tastes like a real treat.

I got this at the start of the last bootcamp and I've hardly make a dent in it but it is lovely.

miffy49 · 28/01/2015 13:54

I got one of those Chester. Its much nicer than the fancy vanilla powder that I bought on-line. When you see it you wonder where your money went but its worth it.Smile I like cinnamon too but I do buy the proper Ceylon cinnamon as I make cinnamon tea to keep my BG down. The cinnamon you buy in the supermarkets is not the real deal. The proper stuff is much nicer and has a delicate, sweeter taste.

Fatstacks as one who has been down all the sugar-free trails I can vouch for Biwi's advice. Just a few days of sticking it out and not buckling to temptation and you will be so much better. You will start to taste a slightly sweet edge to lots of things and you will find that even a few grains of sugar will set your teeth on edge. On Sunday I grabbed what I thought was my glass of fizzy water when I got one of my tablets stuck. It was hubby's Sprite Zero! It tasted worse than the tablet! That's from someone who used to down gallons of that really sweet diet cream soda! Grin When the craving gets bad try eating something off the BC list that is really savoury. Something like a dab of Marmite or Bovril on a bit of cheese. Eventually your taste buds give up the fight. A lot of it is habit too so if theres a time of day when you are most tempted try changing your routine a bit.

Anyone?Hmm

SayraT · 29/01/2015 08:59

Sorry janx I missed you questions but I'd assume from the lack of reply that no one else is feeling dizzy.

Are you still feeling dizzy now? I am afraid I can't answer on the supplements as if you don't know what is making you dizzy then you won't know what to supplement.

I know this is the questions thread but why not ask on the main thread as well? It is busier there.

When I started BC last year I had funny things happen that had never happened before but after a week or two I was back to normal. I have no idea if it was LC related but I could hear and feel my pulse in my ears and I got pains in my abdomen.

BIWI · 29/01/2015 09:18

janx sorry I missed your question.

If you're making sure you're keeping your electrolytes up, can I ask you if you're eating enough?

Post your menus for me for the last few days.

And you know the drill Grin how much fat and how much water are you consuming?

OP posts:
pootlebug · 29/01/2015 09:33

Janx are you sure you're having enough salt. Especially initially, you need quite a bit of extra salt - and don't forget that you won't get getting any salt in bread etc that you usually get. Your kidneys chuck more salt out than someone on a conventional diet (bad explanation - there's a whole chapter in the Volek/Phinney book that's worth reading). You have to salt pretty much everything, ideally (within reason. Veg yes, eggs yes, meat yes, greek yoghurt, no). Dizziness is classic salt-deprivation.

janx · 29/01/2015 17:15

Yes still feeling dizzy

Today
Breakfast -3 rashers bacon and a whole avocado
Coffee
Lunch Nicole salad (small portion). Only thing I could get in a cafe
Scrambled eggs and chorizo (when I got home at 4 as I was really hungry)
Dinner will be mince bolanese (with buttered cabbage instead of spaghetti)
Water -about 2l

Lots of salt on everything

Yesterday
Breakfast -fried egg and bacon, coffee
Lunch -homemade chicken and chorizo stew with mushrooms and spinach in a tomatoe and creamy sauce with lettuce
Dinner-salmon and spinach and green beans in a creamy and cheese sauce
Snack -crispy kale
Full fat yoghurt
All the above laced with salt
Drinks :peppermint tea, water 2l

ChippingInLatteLover · 29/01/2015 21:27

janx

Sorry, I totally missed your question.

Did you get dizzy at all before?

What are the main things you are no longer eating or drinking?

I am at the moment, but it's a problem I suffer from a lot. When I fat adapted properly last time it did mostly go away, so I think if you just stick with it until you're properly adapted you'll probably come right. I'm no doctor mind!

Are you using table salt or lo salt? Lo salt has other stuff in it too which might help.

mootime · 29/01/2015 21:48

Hi all. I know we aren't meant to be counting carbs but how many grams roughly should we be aiming for on BC light. I'm struggling to know if I'm over doing the nuts/ choc/ berries (although it's mainly just macadamia nuts)

janx · 29/01/2015 21:55

Hi chipping
I have using lo salt, but just realised that has 50% less sodium. Just bought some other salt. I was a big bread eater, don't drink much. I did low carbing before but this time I am definately feeling more dizzy.

SayraT · 29/01/2015 22:05

mootime there isn't a figure we can tell you. Everyone is different, some people need to be under 50g per day others can be 100g so there is no point in counting carbs.

You shouldn't be having nuts/choc/berries too much. I would say only one of these things (handful of nuts (7-10 maybe), 20g (2 squares of lindt) dark choc (that is usually around 4g for 85% choc in my experience), small amount of berries) once per day but ideally less than this.

Some people can manage with more than this, others can't.

For example I know when I am not trying to lose weight on this WOE I can eat pasta/pizza/carby type foods once or twice per week plus berries every day plus 100g choc (70%) per week and STS. Not everyone can do that, you need to find out what is right for you.

Though I'd say since we are just starting out and unless veggie or preg/BFing then we should still be on BC not BClite. When we get to week three (did you start early? Sorry can't remember what everyone has done) you can move onto BClite but I'd say nuts/choc/berries in limited quantities and if you STS or gain then I'd suspect too much BClite if you've stuck otherwise.

Goodness, that ended up much longer than I intended!

ChippingInLatteLover · 30/01/2015 02:45

moo. It's not even about whether we should be counting or not, it's just one of those things where everyone is different. Lots of people can lose weight on loads more than me, personally my body's such a Drama Lama it'll only do it on about 30. It's also about the ratios of fat:protein:carbs & eating when you are actually hungry, not bored, sad, happy, etc otherwise if you are over eating, all the carbs will end up on your bum!

How about almonds instead of macadamia's?

If it were me I'd just do what you're doing for a week, see how it goes, but eat mindfully.

Bugger, just scrolled up to see if you'd asked anything else and seen SayraT's post. Anyway, I'll leave mine, even though they're much the same!

Janx. If bread is the only major thing you have given up & if you are eating well & are drinking lots of water (which your posts seem to indicate you are), keeping your salt levels up (there's lots in bread & other processed food and very very little in most stuff we eat on Bootcamp, so you might need more than you think, I'd use a mix of Lo & table salt), then I think it must be unrelated & simply coincidental. Try to think if there's anything else at all you've given up eating or drinking in any quantity.
