hi,
did any of you had to have an operation? What happens to the baby if you have to stay in hospital?

It depends on the hospital I think. If you are brest feeding then they have to do something. Social services often help unless you have a friend/family that can help out.

So are you saying it is possible to take the baby with me at hospital?
I don't have family here but i lied and told them i have. I am worry if they put the baby in care and cant take back. This is why i wanted to ask here first.

It depends on the hospital I think. Do you not have any help at all? Is it something minor you are going in for?

They won't take your baby away for this, it's what they are there for. Could a family member come and stay whilst you are in the hospital?? What about the baby's father/family?

Depends so much on age of baby/breastfeeding/what op you are having/who you have near by/how long youwill be in for etc etc.

Phone hosp and ask for PALS and ask them might give you more info.

My mum is in another country and has her own health problems and i dont want to upset her.
The operation is not very big but after that i might also have radiootherapy or chemotherapy. In that case i will need help. If social services help me then will i get the baby back when i am ok?

They won't take your baby away if you are ill. They are there to help and support you. The media don't show the good side of social services.

This is alot for you to cope with alone. Is there a friend that will help you?

It's at the hospital, it's a liason service between patients and the doctors.

I'd go for the hospital social worker, they will know more. PALS is more of a mediator.

no i dont have anyone. I think i will speak to them then. Yes it is because of the stories in newspapers i panicked

Where abouts in the country are you (you don't need to be specific). There may be someone near you that can help or point you in the right direction.

But i don't need it yet. Maybe i didnt exlplain well, sorry. This will not happen yet. I am due in 4 weeks and after that they ll give me date for the op

It's OK. It's better to be prepared. It'll be more stressful if you don't know what's going to happen with your little one. I'm a single mum aswell, I worry about my son all the time. He's 10 so there's no way he could stay with me. Someone will know, they may point you in the direction of some support aswell. It's hard looking after a newborn, it'll be really tough if you are unwell.

Has the health visitor not helped?

I was in hospital and had 3 operations after dd2 was born, in her first 6 months. I got to have her with me in a private room while I was in as I was breastfeeding and she was used to being with me - luckily we managed to get a childminder for the other 2 when they were not at nursery.

They have to accomodate baby if you are feeding. I honestly can't remember what happened when I was having the ops - they were very short procedures - but I suppose I must have left her on the ward!! Dh was certainly not there, he worked 50 mins away and found it very hard to get time off. (sorry to mention dh on Lone Parents thread but I linked from the other thread).

if i was in london i'd help.

surely you'd be able to keep the baby in the hospital with you... most hospitals have private rooms. i know that my friend got a private room when she gave birth (for a small additional fee.)

PALS=patient advice and liason service they can do the leg work to find out who you should be speaking to.

I take it you mean your baby is due in 4 weeks? If so sorry this just must be adding to the stress.

Have you asked your midwife to put you in touch with someone? Will the op be done straight away? Have you asked your surgeon what can be done? (he wont nec know but you will have brought it to their attention that there is a problem)

you may well be able to get help wiht finding a childminder/the costs if needed to cover the radio/chemotherapy
