I am thinking of taking my child (in first year of school) to see the show in London. Have seen mixed reviews online so in two minds about it.

Many thanks in advance!

Saw it in Edinburgh and it unbelievably good

I watched the theatre show on TV over winter time. I thought it was dreadful.. sorry........

I loved the film SO much (with Danny DeVito as Matilda's dad, and Mara Wilson as Matilda.) And it wasn't a musical. I really disliked this. It was just a noisy mess.

JMHO of course.

I’m not a huge fan of musicals but accompanied a school trip to see this and the kids really loved it.

I loved it!!one of the best productions I've seen. The dc were 7 and 10 when we saw it. They both enjoyed it. I thought ds(10) might have been too old, but he was hugely taken in by the whole live orchestra, big theatre experience. It's quite long though.

FWIW I hated the Danny de Vito movie.

Mooploop · 21/03/2025 20:40

It's fabulous! Saw it on the west end last year.

Velvetbee · 21/03/2025 20:43

Saw it earlier this month and loved it.

okydokethen · 21/03/2025 20:45

I absolutely loved it as did my DC

finallydecorating · 21/03/2025 20:46

Absolutely loved it, as did DD. It's brilliant.

MightyBust · 21/03/2025 20:50

We saw it in London, and really loved it.

You’ll all love it! Such a good show.

onestepfurtheragain · 21/03/2025 20:51

Bloody brilliant

I loved it, as did both my kids. However am I right in thinking your child is in reception? If so I’d wait a couple of years. The recommended age is 6+, partly as some bits can be a bit scary but also it is a full length production and sitting still and quiet for that long is a lot for a four year old.

ItisIbeserk · 21/03/2025 20:53

I’ve seen it twice, with two different children. I adore it, they both loved it, but they were both about 7 at the time. It depends on how good your child is at sitting. I’d say some of the slower bits might lead to wriggling!

iamnotalemon · 21/03/2025 20:55

I loved it

minipie · 21/03/2025 20:55

I thought it was brilliant. The lyrics and staging are incredibly clever. DH doesn’t like musicals much and he thought it was fantastic and has recommended it multiple times.

Yes, I took my son last night funnily enough. He's 11 and was getting a bit fidgety by the end. The language isn't super simple.

He really enjoyed it - I wouldn't say he was blown away (like he was for Totoro) but a it's a really fun evening.

minipie · 21/03/2025 20:56

5 years old might be a bit young. They’d probably enjoy most of it but would get more out of it a few years later IMO.

Mayflyoff · 21/03/2025 20:57

I'd wait a couple of years. But it is excellent.

jellybe · 21/03/2025 21:02

The stage show is amazing! The film version didn’t do it justice.

Smartiepants79 · 21/03/2025 21:03

Stage show is fantastic. Highly recommended!

Loveduppenguin · 21/03/2025 21:05

I took my dd when she was 5/6 and she loved it! She’s 11 now and still talks about it 🥰

modgepodge · 21/03/2025 21:08

I love it and my daughter is desperate to see it, but at nearly 6 I feel she is a bit young. I reckon wait a year or two personally.

SatyrTights · 21/03/2025 21:12

We’ve seen it twice and all loved it. I think DS was eight the first time and ten the next. He’d happily see it again and he’s 13 now. Clever staging and great songs.

Whitesapphire · 21/03/2025 21:23

I thought it was amazing, made me really emotional.

EmeraldDreams73 · 21/03/2025 21:46

We saw it with dd7 and dd10 about 10 years ago. We all absolutely adored it and are all still word perfect for every song to this day! Bought the soundtrack CD at the theatre and have downloaded it to keep listening. Every now and then the girls still ask for it on car journeys and we all sing.

It's incredibly clever and brilliant. I've also taught several piano pupils the score over the years, it's enduringly popular and with good reason.

If I could afford it I'd go again in a heartbeat.
