I am thinking of taking my child (in first year of school) to see the show in London. Have seen mixed reviews online so in two minds about it.

Many thanks in advance!

We saw it with dd7 and dd10 about 10 years ago. We all absolutely adored it and are all still word perfect for every song to this day! Bought the soundtrack CD at the theatre and have downloaded it to keep listening. Every now and then the girls still ask for it on car journeys and we all sing.

It's incredibly clever and brilliant. I've also taught several piano pupils the score over the years, it's enduringly popular and with good reason.

If I could afford it I'd go again in a heartbeat.

Yes, whether you remember a lot of songs is key!

Loved it.

I wasn't takennwith the first couple of songs, but then I was swept away by it.

To watch and listen to "Quiet" and "When I grow up" being performed live on stage is fantastic (and possibly caused a lump in my throat!) .

I think dc were 10 and 12.

I would love to see it again.

It’s brilliant but could be scary or worrying for a young kid - I’d say 8 plus?

Went years ago and still think about that huge swing. Loved the whole thing. Brilliant and clever. So very memorable and entertaining whatever age you are.

LemonadeQueen · 21/03/2025 22:03

Brilliant! Was a sell out in southampton

I went in 2018 and GS was 8 he loved it so did I and I wasn't a massive fan of the film although my 2 kids loved it at the time and still do.

I took another GS in reception year to Charlie and the chocolate factory stage show and he lived that he would have been fine with Matilda too.

It’s amazing! We went in January and my 11 yo and 10 yo loved it x

I'd wait a couple of years. But it is excellent.

I agree with this ^

Took DS as part of his 10th birthday and we both loved it! It has a couple jumpy bits though, maybe a bit much for 5 year olds.

When I Grow Up has me in pieces every time.

I didn’t enjoy it - to me, it felt like watching a school production. My children liked it more than I did, though they are much older than yours and I agree with others that it would be long for a 5 as old.

Had been really keen to see it, but was v disappointed. DD was 8 at the time and fell asleep half way through.

BeaAndBen · 22/03/2025 06:32

Dc were 10, 14 and 17 and all really enjoyed it. I wouldn’t take a child under about 7 just for the length.

minipie · 22/03/2025 09:45

For those who didn’t enjoy it - I wonder if you had a less good actress playing Matilda? I think the experience really rests on having a good one and I believe it rotates.

Fluffycloudsfloatinginthesky · 22/03/2025 10:53

we have seen it twice but think you need to wait a couple of years.

bugalugs45 · 22/03/2025 13:12

It’s the favourite show my niece has seen , even beating frozen . I enjoyed it too as an adult , brought back fond memories of reading the book as a child

Smleps · 23/03/2025 13:05

I saw it a few years ago and loved it!

Sgtmajormummy · 23/03/2025 13:25

I saw it in London with a slightly superior 15yo DS who was really impressed with the live musicians and choreography- all those changing letter blocks, the swings and the slightly bullying martial arts gestures. Miss Trunchbull was deliciously evil and I screamed when (spoiler).
DD was 8 and enraptured. We still talk about it. “Everything I Learnt (I Learnt from TELLY)” was a new one for us.

Like PP I wouldn’t go with a 6yo. Too long and a bit scary.
