Hello all, I am new to Mumsnet (although have used it before as a reference in UK), and also new to Melbourne having moved over a few weeks ago! Feeling a bit overwhelmed at the moment and just wondered if there were any Aussie/ expat mums around for school/nursery/playground tips!

LOL at social whirlwind ... Melb. cup weekend will be our first chance to really get out of the 'burbs and see a bit of Victoria and the 19th/20th I am working - lol

27th sounds perfect for me ...
I will have to let you guys decide where to go as I don't know anywhere ... apart from a couple of local restaurants and DH tells me Lygon street is brill but have never actually eaten there myself.
I can either drive or go by taxi ... I won't take trams/buses or trains at night on my own as am a big girl's blouse like MelbourneMum ... I could get a train there and a taxi home ... that would work.

Ahem, anywhere THAT sells food will be just spiffing. Lyngon street sounds good - I had never heard of it prior to this conversation so that's fun in itself!! Have just told DH that I'm venturing out and he's cool, so bring it on! (Not that he wouldn't be cool, but it's always nice to have his blessing )

so, is everyone on for the 27th?

Report

Yes the 27th is good for me. I can't wait!!

Oooh, Can I join in too? melbournemum has met me and can (hopefully) vouch that I'm not a nutter!

I used to post a bit but have just been lurking for a year. Have 2 boys, 3 & 11m and live in Camberwell.

I'd love to meet you all.

ghosty · 07/10/2007 05:36

YAY! We have another taker!
Hello Tango, we have met on here a couple of times I think and I remember that you met MM ...
Camberwell is not that far from where I live ... in fact only last week I was stuck on Burke Road in Camberwell on my way to see MelbourneMum!
My DD is 3 too.
We were thinking (apart from our evening get together) that next time we meet during the day we might go to Billy Lid's in Hawthorn ... do you fancy coming too?

For our evening out is the 27th October good for you?

Report
tangox3 · 07/10/2007 06:49

Hurray! I'm fine with the 27th too. I'm pretty central so anywhere is good.

Billy Lids sounds like a plan too! As fate would have it I'm moving to Hawthorn in early November and will be about 10 mins walk from there! Haven't been yet though so let me know what date/ day you have planned. Tuesday and Friday, ds1 at daycare, so no good for me, although could come just with the little fella.

So the list is...

ghosty
DCNachoswithcheese
superpregnantloopy
MelbourneCupMum
Wilbs
tangox3

This is also on if anyone is interested. It's being organised by one of the Facebook groups I'm on (Melbourne Mums) and it's just a general 'come one-come all' thing.

I'm thinking of going as love the Botanic gardens and thought it might be fun.

Melbourne Mums' Family Picnic.
Sunday, October 14th, 10:30am at Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne

Let me know if you'd be interested in coming as we could meet up (is 10.30 too early to open up the bubbly?! I mean, it IS a picnic...)

MelbourneMum · 07/10/2007 06:55

HELLO to tangox3, was only thinking of you the other day, I'm sure I saw you on facebook?? I've not a clue what I"m doing on that thing and I think I invited everyone in my gmail address to be 'my friend' on facebook! Whoops.
Can most definitely vouch that tangox3 is neither large, hairy, nor a trucker (not that there is anything wrong with any of those characteristics in isolation or all rolled in to one rather attractive individual!)

27th is tricky for me because we have Oscar's kinder annual social event and I'm on the committee (very busy and important I am) so a no-show would not look good.

buggar buggar buggar - it seems to work for all of you. HOWEVER, an idea strikes her. The kinder 'do' starts at 6pm so I could go there for a couple of hours and then come in to the city to meet up with you lot... Its doable in an I'm-wild-and-youthful-and-don't-hit-the-clubs-until-10pm' kind of way...

Have just been doing some checking and desite extensive research, have failed to find any official law stating that 10.30am is indeed, too early to pop the bubbly.
So BAR'S OPEN! I say.

Oh no, no, no - can't have Melbourne meet-up without Melbourne Mum!
What about the Friday night instead....the 26th???? Wouldn't really be fair to choose a night where someone can't come, as it's a Melbourne Meet!
26th any good or is it shite?

26th is perfect for me ...
How does that work for everyone?

The only bugger is is that I am having my hair done on the Saturday and was just thinking how wonderfully chic and 'with it' I will look when you first meet me ... Like I have just stepped out of a Salon ...

But probly best you meet me at my worst with my bad roots

Tango I just looked for the Melbourne Mums group on facebook but only found one with one member ... LOL ... so I joined it so she didn't feel lonely anymore ...
No mention of a picnic
Not that I can do that day as DS has his soccer presentation thingy to go to [bugger]

Report
tangox3 · 07/10/2007 13:30

Ah well, ghosty, maybe next time.

The one I'm on has 84 members, so methinks a different one to the one you found...Melbourne Mums...might be case sensitive or something.

I'm still trying to get the hang of this facebook malarkey! The teens and twentysomethings that I used to teach must be sniggering loudly at me being on it!

26th is fine for me too.

Have also just joined Facebook - had no idea this was all there! Bizarre, thought I was up-to-date with the happenings of the world wide web, but obv not!!!
Wilbs...sorry for hijacking your thread, but at least you've got this fab Melbourne thread up and running

Anyone else for the 26th? It'll give me a lovely excuse to leave work early....

wilbs · 08/10/2007 10:06

Melbournemum, have emailed you! Our things are being delivered this week and I'm on the way to sorting out a school which will be a big sigh of relief all round....

Could meet for coffee and cake next week if that suits ladies, would like to join the meet up on the 26th but a pre meet up would be good too!

I can make it on the 26th. No sure what time I can get there, will have to wait for DH to get home from work.

I ate a really nice restaurant on Lygon St a few weeks ago called Tiamo 2. It's quite small but the food was lovely and quite inexpensive. I have also pigged out in Chinatown too, I guess it just depends on what you guys all feel like eating. I am eating everything at the moment!!!

Report
DCsnatchsunhill · 09/10/2007 10:49

Brill. Shall we make the 26th a date then?
I eat any old stuff also, so if anyone else really has a fave restaurant then let's go for it!
Have never heard of Lygon Street either, so that already sounds fun.

Report
tangox3 · 10/10/2007 00:15

26th still good for me. I don't know Lygon St so can't recommend anywhere but hear it's great for food!

This place got 1 hat in the Age Good Food Guide and looks to be fairly reasonable...?

Have a look at these and see if there's anywhere you fancy

So ladies ...

So far we have lift off for Friday the 26th October with:

ghosty
DCNachoswithcheese
superpregnantloopy
MelbourneCupMum
Wilbs
tangox3

Any other takers????

I am going to let you lot make the final decision on where as I hate making such important decisions and will happily go with whatever you want ...
I love Italian, Greek, Lebanese, Thai ... whatever, anything ...
But rather not have Indian ... can have that whenever and is always DH's take away of choice .... but if you are all desperate for a Ruby Murray then I can concede

(DS went to Kinder with a little girl called Ruby Murray ... it was hard to stifle the grin every time I met her )

My DH can get home around 6ish so I can be ready to rock and roll anytime after that.

I am SOOOOOO excited

I meant to say thank you to tango for those links ... all those places look yummy ...
How have you got on with the school choices Wilbs?

Report
tangox3 · 11/10/2007 07:21

This place is really nice. I went there earlier in the year for dh's work do and the wine selection is ace! Food was great..something for all tastes and a nice ambience. Soft lighting so we will all look fabulous.

Look here to check out the menu

Too pricey? OK?

Ooooh, I can't choose. I need someone else to decide. I eat anything at all, and am too excited about going out to care exactly where we go.

I'm going to go and iron my clothes right now!!!

Tango, that place looks really good ...
But it may be a wee bit pricey for some ... what do others think?

Report
DCsnatchsunhill · 11/10/2007 12:25

hang on...will have a look....
Hmmmm, looks absolutely delicious but yes, it does seem a tad pricey. Thank you though for the link!
I don't know anywhere in the City at all so I am no help, but how about a place where we can relax and chat, and the food is cheap-ish and cheerful? Don't mean really cheeep, just mean cheerfully cheap IYKWIM.
Anyone know of this place that I'm talking about ???
