Oh yes forgot to say - if you have an above board cleaner you can set what you pay them against tax. Same goes for other registered, tax paying local Handwerk up to a set amount - gardener, handyman etc.

Very excited! In the car now, moving to germany! Stopping off en route for a weeks hols. Then straight into our new house! First efforts are going to be finding a bank account, Internet provider and (fingers crossed!) cleaner. So any tips gratefully received!

Latest question (sorry): does anyone use amazon prime? It seems to me it might be quite a good option to solve dh's need for Telly in English sometimes, uk footie games, plus my dislike of going to shops (I don't mean grocery shops, I'm sucking that up) but shops for other things. I'm quite a fan of stuff just arriving.

amazon prime I thought about it but based on a survey of other expats heard that it doesn't have that much original english stuff and you are better with netflix for english language telly.
bank account be prepared for German stone age bank accounts. Some high street banks will charge account charges and for credit cards etc but you could shop around and go for an internet bank e.g. 1822 Consors or Ing-DiBa (there are other ones). These let you withdraw money for free from any bank machine and the only thing you can't do is pay a cheque in (but who uses cheques these days anyway). Sparkasse is everywhere but I have decided against them in the past because you didn't have free use of their machines in towns beyond your own (shock horror).
Internet you could go for Telekom (expensive) or if you have cable telly, you might get a good package from Kabel Deutschland. Internet is more pricey than the UK. We have a deal with Kabel Deutschland which gives me a flatrate of 4 Euros a month for unlimited calls to Europe (believe me I make use of it!)

We will be east of Nürnberg, north east of Munich

How far from Nuernberg?
Nuernberg is technically Bavaria (Middle Frankonia really) but it's actually quite different to the sort of Bayern that is Munich and the Southern parts of Bavaria.

I am originally from Munich, if you have any questions, feel free to send a message
