DH in intensive care after stem cell transplant

Hi, I'm devastated - after 2 years of treatment after treatment for lymphoma, my husband is in hospital having an allo stem cell transplant - he is now on +day 6 and was taking into intensive care on saturday with inflammation of the heart muscles (myocarditis). Today he had an extremely fast heart rate (190) which has now been brought down to about 138 and I've been told by the ICU doctor that he may not make it. He has fluid on his lungs and chest, and they are trying to get rid of this too. She said it hangs in the balance and he is not going in the direction they would like him to be, although he is stable at the moment. I have been asked to go and visit tomorrow with the kids (ages 9 and 12) - I asked if it was to say goodbye and the dr said not necessarily, but good to see him whilst he is alert.

I am devastated to say the least. I have spoken to his transplant haematologist in tears as i just don't understand how this has happened, and he seems to have a slightly more positive view. So, it's hard to know what to think. Has anyone had this experience before? or been in intensive care and had a good outcome? I can't believe it's come to this and don't know where to turn.

brilliant news @Lalaland50, hope his recovery is quick and the stem cell transplant has the same positive impact for your dh as it did for my brother and kicks that cancer into touch.

Hi OP

I've just read through your thread and just wanted to say how glad I am that your dh has pulled through.

Not sure if anyone else has mentioned this but the charity icu steps provides resources and help for icu patients and their families. There might be some support there if you'd find it useful.

Thanks for all the lovely messages. I wanted to update you - my rollercoaster hasn't stopped. My DH is back on the ward, but his white blood count has completely plummeted the last few days (after rising 14 days after the transplant which was the expected time). The transplant nurse said they are concerned that this is early graft rejection as it's unusual to see such a sudden drop, although she said it could also be due to infection - although seems she was erring more towards graft rejection. They have sent off a test and will know in a couple of days what the results of this are. I am just so worried. She said they can get some more donor cells, but this could take weeks, and they don't know if he'll be able to have further chemo, which may be necessary to wipe his immune system again. I know this is a rather specialist area, but I just wanted to update. I'm back to extreme anxiety and can't believe there's another potential setback. I'm not sure how much more of this I can take.

I'm not in the least bit religious, but I'll say a prayer for you and DH.
