I rented a car from Sixt UK via Booking.com on 29 October 2025 at Victoria Station.
The vehicle had a strong burning smell and unusually high fuel consumption shortly after pickup.
I contacted Sixt several times but received no timely assistance, losing three full days of my trip.
When I later went to the Battersea branch (as arranged by Sixt), staff spoke in a rude and dismissive tone, which made me feel racially discriminated against as a Chinese customer.
Sixt denied any issue, claiming it was “a new car smell,” and refused replacement or compensation.
All this is like a scam. I booked an Audi, but when I arrived at the store, I was told that it was only Volvo or I had to pay more to change cars. I checked Google's comments, and most of them accused this store of being a shameless liar. How can I defend my rights?I think maybe I don't buy insurance at the store, so give me a broken car on purpose?

I think the costs of suing them would outweigh any compensation, but they are an awful company. They rented my parents a car with damage on it, which they took pics of before leaving the airport, then claimed they caused the damage despite the evidence. That was 2.5yrs ago and they’re still getting debt collection letters.

This is a shameless liar company.

Your posts don’t make much sense. How did you lose 3 days? You say that there first day you didn’t really take any notice so day 1 was ‘normal’. On day 1 you called roadside assistance - what did they say? Did they identify a problem or did they say the car was fine? And then you only took the car back on day 3? What were you doing during these 3 days? Sounds like you used the car on all 3 of them? So you got what you paid for surely? Or have you got written evidence that the car was too dangerous to drive and/or broke down?

How long did you book the car for?
Did the car stop working?
When roadside rescue came out what did they say?
Where were you planning to drive to?
Did you manage to travel in the car at all? For how long?
When you asked to change cars why did they refuse?

Firstly, being rude and dismissive isn’t being racist. They were just being rude and this happens all the time. Unless there was a specific racist thing said you are just looking to point that finger.

A strong smell doesn’t necessarily mean anything - was it a smell of fuel? Smoke? Burning? If you called roadside assistance, why didn’t you wait for them to come out which they normally do within a couple of hours. There was a solution here and you didn’t follow it through so again your holiday wasn’t ruined for three days when there was a solution there for you.

Sixt have call center a open all the time - why didn’t you call them and ask to rerun the car to the nearest center for exchange?

Most car companies don’t allow you to book a specific vehicle but a ‘like for like’ vehicle and this is clear but very small under each car when you book. You book a class of car not a specific car itself.

How are you possibly going to sue from another country?

It's not the smell of fuel, it's the smell of burning plastic. I just contacted the customer service and towed the car according to their instructions.
