i've just had number 3. Lovely homebirth, all well.
BUT altho my labours becoming easier each time and quicker, my babies are getting bigger (7lb 12oz, 8lb 5oz, 9lb 9oz.) and the shoulders are getting harder and harder to deliver.

Anyone else had this problem? I'd love to hear other peoples experiences as i'm already worrying about the next time. (perhaps prematurely as baby only ten days old but worrying all the same!!)

Pollyanna · 27/09/2008 22:21

Yes, each baby has been bigger than the last - my last one (my 5th) was 10lb 2oz. Very easy birth though.

NotAnOtter · 27/09/2008 22:22

NO MINE PEAKED AT NUMBER 3 AND HAVE GOT GRADUALLY LIGHTER

births no easier though

aGalChangedHerName · 27/09/2008 22:23

Mine got bigger then smaller.

DS1 6lbs 6oz
DS2 6lbs 13oz
DD1 9lbs 14oz
DD2 8lbs 12oz

So maybe next one will be smaller??

psychomum5 · 27/09/2008 22:24

mine didn't.

well, second one was bigger, then they got smaller......

8lb 8oz
8lb 10oz
8lb
7lb 2oz
7lb 12oz.

the hardest births were #1 and #4 (#4 was because he was early and I had broken ribs from a car accident, so in some ways, tis unfair to include).

easiest birth was my 2nd!

minkersmum · 27/09/2008 22:27

Funnily enough my cousin has 5 and weight wise they peaked at number 3 then got smaller.

maybe i could lay off the cakes next time... or take up smoking in the third trimester

Ds1 -7lb 11oz Really hard.
Ds2 -8lb 5oz Easy, I didn't really do anything he was coming whther I liked it or not.
Ds3 8lb 4oz Easy, I knew exactly what was going on and just let my body do its thing.

Ds4 8lb 11oz Hardest thing I ever did. Physically it was hard but mentally I was completely floored. Bloody awful.

minkersmum · 27/09/2008 22:40

ladytophamhatt but looks so cute, lovely boys! Was it that bad, is a 4th not to be recommended??

OP posts:
GobbledigookisThrifty · 27/09/2008 22:52

Ds1 - 8lb 4oz - easy but only because I was induced and had an epidural

Ds2 - 8lb 3oz - easy and super, super quick. Nothing I could do to stop it and it was over in minutes. Physically a doddle but mentally difficult to get my head around.

Ds3 - 8lb 10oz - easy, text book birth with no pain relief (except a birthing ball ). Brilliant!

Lizzylou · 27/09/2008 22:54

DS1 8lb 13oz, 48 hr labour, prepped for emergency c-section, ended up as a ventouse
DS2 10lb 11oz 17 hr labour, lets just say that Dh and I both agreed that if we had have had DS2 1st, we'd have never had anymore children. But he was so big, I s'pose that was to be expected and at least it was (relatively) quick!

TheDuchessOfNork · 27/09/2008 22:55

minkers - that's quite a weight-gain for each birth, I can see why you'd be nervous!

DD1 was 8lb 6oz, 7 hr labour, not too bad
DS1 was 8lb 12oz, 3 hr labour, pretty good
DD2 was 8lb 6oz, 1hr labour, unbelievably easy
DS2 was 8lb 2oz, 1hr labour, quite easy

The afterpains however, DO get worse. I have no pain relief for labour but want anything I can get for those terrible cramps. Fortunately, I'm finished with all that!

minkersmum · 28/09/2008 12:06

duchess the after pains are awful aren't they. i too had natural drug free births but felt like asking for something afterwards. esp with this one (3rd). Weightgain concerning eh and the thing is in each pregnancy i've only gained a stone fron conception weight to delivery date, so don't think its me pigging out .... altho maybe not as careful with healthy diet as time goes on ... maybe too many sweet things= bigger baby!

OP posts:
minkersmum · 28/09/2008 12:12

oh i suppose its probably relevant to mention that each pregnancy got longer too .. DOH! very significant i would say ...
1st baby 37 weeks
2nd baby 38 weeks
3rd baby 40 weeks

4th baby 42+weeks, 10lb+ ???

maybe 3 enough but would be sad to think that after 3 good births i would be afraid to have another.

lots of people deliver 10lb+ babies and i'm not exactly small framed, its more about being afraid of how delivery is managed. Maybe i'll save for an independant midwife this time who is confident in dealing with these things. Wish i was rich....

7lb 13
6lb 15
8lb 5
7lb 15
8lb
6lb 14
8lb 14
8lb 3
8lb 11

Births got easier.
First was a nightmare induction.
2nd easier.

3rd difficult labour. I was sent home after being told I wasn't in labour . Returned to delivery 25 mins before birth. Easy birth.

After labouring at home for my 3rd, I realised what labour and birth was all about and determined for future deliveries not to set foot in a hospital until I reached transition. All subsequent births(where I managed to avoid hospital until the last minute) were so much easier.

4th and 5th straightforward

My 6th was the easiest of the lot. One and half hours from first pain to delivery. Fantastic.

My 7th was the only one where my waters broke before crowning and they were meconium stained so I decided to go to hospital to be checked out. This meant I was in there for a couple of hours before delivering and found it painful to the point of requesting an epidural. Didn't get one as I'd instructed dh to tell them I didn't really want one. I'm convinced the pain was only as bad as it was because I was in hospital.

No. 8 laboured at home. Easy delivery (almost in the lift on the way up to delivery unit).

No. 9 induced. Easy labour. Delivery spoiled by panicking midwives who insisted that I move from room on antenatal ward to delivery unit.

williamsmummy · 28/09/2008 15:44

1st, 9lb ,
hell, forceps, needlework / and lots of it/etc, nasty infection afterwards..............nasty , nasty.
I was on antibiotics , walking like I had just got off a horse , baby had nasty salad tong marks, and sloping forhead..............thankfully granny was good at knitting hats!

2nd 10lb 8oz ( long baby as well.......head and feet touching plastic hosiptal cot. wearing 3-6 month old babygros)
much better, shoulders WERE just as much work as head. But in all good..............do remember having to PUSH out placenta........over 2lbs apparently...........I didnt look. midwives more interested in placenta than infant..........strange women.

3rd. 7lb 3oz easy labour, ( horrid pregnancy) baby wasnt happy, cord around neck, and 24 hrs later B step infection.
After pains worse than labour.....

4th 7lb 8oz easy. easy easy. after pains dreadful. remember screaming for gas and air at home................poor hubby...........and all he could give me was a lousy parcetamol.

unknownrebelbang · 28/09/2008 15:52

Not sure I'm qualified to comment, as only have three (and won't have any more).

DS1 - 8 lb 5 1/2 oz. Ok birth.

DS2 - 10 lb 14 oz. Induced, birth not too bad considering, retained placenta so ended up in theatre.

DS3 - 10 lb 6 oz. About to be induced, but ended up having a section, due to him heading towards my hip .

cafebistro · 28/09/2008 15:56

Juuule- 9 children? I take my hat off to you

QueenBhannae · 28/09/2008 17:39

1st- 9lb at 40+1 induced- fell asleep several times during (mammoth) labour ended up with forceps. Taken into hospital on Saturday. Was taken to delivery room Monday morning 3am and delivered at 13.35 on
the Wednesday!

2nd -12lb 8oz - emergency section nearly 4 weeks early

3rd -12lb 2oz - emergency section 3 weeks early

Good luck with number four minkers and congrats on no.3

minkersmum · 28/09/2008 22:11

Thank queenB. juuule 9?? OMG i'm so jealous and curious!! Is your house chaotic? Ours is a mad house with only 3! I wish i felt my 'births' were getting easier, labour certainley and the head is never a problem, its that horrible period when the head is out and all goes quite and i'm thinking 'come on contraction, lets get thhe rest out', so jealous of women who can slither the whole baby out in the one contraction. Last time my baby's head was sitting out for 4 mins before the shoulders were born, longest 4 mins of my life!! Still plan to do it again tho!

cazboldy · 29/09/2008 14:47

mine were

ds1 6lbs 8oz in hospital, about 6 and a half hours.

dd1 7lbs 2oz at home about 2 and a half hours

ds2 6lbs 12 oz at home, delivered by dh, 45mins, from first twinge to birth

ds3 7lbs 9oz 2 hours, at home

dd2 6lbs 14oz, at home, born in the bath while dh was letting the midwife in!

jade1978 · 30/09/2008 22:09

mine have got gradually bigger

dd1 6lb 13oz long long labour ended in epidural and ventouse

ds 8lb 3oz 9 hr very painful labour

dd2 8lb 6oz 4hr labour really easy

dd3 8lb 9oz easy home delivery

After pains unbelievably painful with 4th, with 5th on the way more worried about afterpains that the birth!!!

minkersmum · 01/10/2008 20:38

jade1978 i have also found the after pains terrible. After the last one i really wanted to take something for them as every time i had one i had this sense of panic rise inside me as i thought 'oh god here comes another contraction', then of course i remembered i'd had the baby... but so sore it was almost worse than the labour. At least when you labour you know something good coming at the end which makes it a bearable pain!! Just!!

Idobelieveinfairies · 02/10/2008 14:12

dd1 8lb 11....not painful...but had stitches.
ds1 8lb 14...induced, quick, painful,grazes.
