We are expecting a 3rd in April and very excited.
DC1 arrived at 41 weeks (8lb) and DC2 at 42 weeks after an induction (9lb 5) and I am wondering what to expect this time. I assume if I’ve been overdue before it’ll be the case again?

Also am rather hoping 3rd might be in between the two sizes which is what the midwife suggested but I had worried slightly baby might be even bigger so interested in your greater experience if happy to advise or share! Thank you so much

(My main concern is baby getting shoulders stuck as came so close with our last baby! And trying to weigh up risk as the midwife will kindly give an idea of weight nearer the time but I know it can be quite approximate. And very torn with the idea of a home birth as they seemed to encourage it but don’t want baby getting stuck if this one late and large too)

I’m convinced that the body just knows how big of a baby it can birth, grows them to that size and then decides it’s eviction time!
DC1 was born 38+2 and weighed 6lb 12oz.
DC2 was born at 36+0 and weighed 6lb 9oz.
DC3 was born at 40+0 and weighed 6lb 13oz.
So wildly varying cooking time for all of them, but very similar weights!

1st, 41+1, 7lb2
2nd, 42+1 8lb
3rd, 41+4, 7lb8.

So 3 overdue babies here. 3rd baby in the middle of the other two in gestation and weight. Maybe will depend on when #3 arrives if they are heavier? You could always change your mind, say opt for home birth but if you go
way overdue and are worried about size you can swap at any point.

This is so helpful and interesting when I only have my own experience .
potatogoblins I do hope that is right as it would be reassuring. I just remember quite a sense of near panic in the room when DS was very stuck and I couldn’t push any harder so it weighs on me I wouldn’t want this to happen again or to need forceps! But the answers here suggest weights can just as easily go down too !

@Wildrobin I also had DC’s 2 & 3 at home and their births were a billion times better than DC1’s hospital birth!

1st 7lb 7oz at 39+6 induced due to high bp, fetal distress so vontouse delivery.
2nd 10lb 12oz at 40+5 spontaneous labour. I was 1cm at 39+6, but born only 2hr 19mins after they broke my waters (5cm). Unassisted vaginal delivery, shoulders got a bit stuck but only 14mins pushing so not too bad for a chunky baby.
3rd 9lb 10oz at 40+2. Spontaneous labour, contractions started on due date, born 11 mins after they broke my waters (8cm). Unassisted vb, just a few pushes.
4/5 twins 8lb 5oz & 8lb 11oz at 38. Breech and transverse so elective c-section.
6th 10lb 15oz at 38+6. Went in to labour about 3am though I was in denial about it until 3pm as I had an elcs booked for the following day, was 3cm when examined at 4pm. They got me in to surgery for cs after 11pm (had a more urgent one before me), 1st scar ruptured due to size of her and I lost a lot of blood so was unwell after. I kept asking if her size would cause a rupture but they said no, I knew they were wrong!!

Good luck

All 3 of mine were born in hospital with increasing size and levels of pain relief each time. I too worried about them getting bigger each time based on what I'd heard from midwives and mothers of multiples. Admittedly it wasn't by much in the end but it makes a difference!

DD1 40+3 8lb
DS2 39+6 8lb 10oz
DS3 38+6 8lb 15oz

All three labours were very similar (Close to due date, contractions then waters going right at the end, in fact I had to have them broken for #2 and #3). Absolutely fascinating to me. I wonder if your pattern will be the same as with your previous 2?
How long were your labours last time?

Such lovely answers thank you all so much and just back from a walk so going to properly reread with my feet up! My Labours were both quite short (a few hours) but I didn’t time them so not sure.
A friend told me this morning who trained as a midwife that the shoulders getting stuck is more to do with position at birth than weight so larger weight not necessarily an issue

DD - 40+1 - 8.11 - hard time
DS - 39+4 - 8.6 - easy (ish)
DD - 40 - 8.4 - easy peasy best birth
DS - 38+4 - 8.1 - hard work, 3 day labour, but was sweeped due to reduced movements and both my body and DS were clearly not ready.

1st 40+2 9lb 9oz - spontaneous labour, very straight forward natural delivery, total labour (from first contraction to delivery) about 25 hours
2nd 38+9 8lb 10oz - induction but still straight forward natural delivery, total labour about 16 hours
3rd 40+5 8lb 10oz - induction again but very odd labour, took me 18 hours(!) to get to 4cm, only in established labour for an hour and a half and baby was out in 3 pushes

I heard third babies are apparently notorious for wacky labours and fourth babies are as unpredictable as first babies.

shivabeaver · 20/01/2022 18:56

My first was 41weeks exactly, 7lb 14, second was elcs at 39 weeks but no sign of labour 9lb 10. Third was elcs 38+something but I was having contractions night before, 8lb 5.
