8 eggs collected 6 mature only 2 fertilised

hello!! I’ve just had an egg collection with ABC on Friday and got the call on Saturday to say 6 were mature but only 2 fertilised. We have male factor issues - looking for some hope or help with why only 2 out of 6 fertilised and the chances that one of them will make it to day 3. Have been told we have to do freeze all as oestrogen was high :(

Sorry to hear that the fertilisation outcome may not have been what was expected.

My last cycle I had 13 eggs 13 mature and only 4 fertilised - with ICSI. We have MFI and I have low AMH. I’m mid 30s. 2 went on to make day 6 blasts - but unfortunately in my case were both PGTA abnormal.

I don’t have a positive story yet - about to start another cycle this month! however, please do stay hopeful. I have everything crossed for you.

Thank you!! We also used ICSI. I’ve just turned 31 but wonder what has caused low fertilisation rates :( waiting on the update tomorrow feels horrible! Sorry to hear you haven’t had luck yet - wishing you all the luck for your next cycle!! Xxx

Sorry to hear that it didn’t turn out to be what you hope for. In this journey ttc is full of miracles. Like they say it only takes one and you have two. Are they freezing one on day 3?

I am 34 hubby and I decided to go ABC. I am fairly new to here. We had most of the tests done just waiting for the blood result. Hopefully, we can start the next cycle in late October just sort of preparing myself for it what do you expect

thank you!! I don’t know the plan for freezing as they only let us know we would need to freeze all on egg collection day on Friday. Do they typically freeze on day 3 or 5?

@ABC1103 Sorry to hear this. I'm in exactly the same boat - they collected 11 eggs on Friday, and called this morning to say that 9 were mature but only 2 fertilised. It's crap isn't it! I'm so worried the odds are against us for getting any blastocysts. We were hoping to do a fresh transfer this Wednesday.

Sorry to hear that! I can understand the questioning. From reading the literature, there’s quite a large range in people’s outcomes partly the numbers are small (% isn’t really meaningful for <10) You may just be unlucky this time with the number of fertilised eggs :( I know it doesn’t really help. Fingers crossed for you, hopefully they’ll make it! I also had my egg collection last Friday: 8 mature eggs and 4 fertilised with ICSI, which also seemed lower than the average (I’m mid 30ies). If any make it to blastocyst stage they will be frozen on day 5-7. They said they can give them a few more days to grow if needed.

Nervous for the call tomorrow :/ I know it feels so unfair, I’m 31 healthy BMI and had all positive feedback throughout the process so far. We have male factor issues and let us know his morphology was low on the sample used for ICSI. Wondering if that affected the fertilisation rates?

Probably best to ask someone at your clinic but from what I read low morphology shouldn’t impact on fertilisation when ICSI is used. The reason they developed ICSI was to overcome make factors.

It really is a guessing game as to how many will make blastocyst, each cycle/person will be different each time.
Both myself and partner have no known issues (unexplained) and have had 2 collections, meds remained the same on both with completely different outcomes.
1st collection:
14 collected, 8 fertilised, 4 made day 3, 2 made 5 day blastocyst. 1st transfer ended in miscarriage, 2nd transfer failed.
2nd collection:
8 collected, 8 fertilised, 8 made day 3, 5 made day 5 blastocyst. 3rd transfer failed, currently nearly 15 weeks pregnant on 4th transfer (2 freezing).
I done exactly the same for both collections but results differed hugely. All I can say is don’t get disappointed, it’s nothing you or your body has done wrong, unfortunately it’s just one of them things.

@AABC1103 Has your clinic updated you today? Keeping fingers crossed for you! One of ours has normal fertilization and has made it to day 3. The other matured in the lab overnight so it's a day behind but it also has atypical fertilization so they don't know what will happen to it. I don't know if I'm making things more stressful by asking for daily updates but at least today I know we're not out yet.

Hey all! Thanks so much for sharing your experiences. It really is such an anxious time and journey. We just had the call and we’re told we actually had 3 embryos fertilised ( one a bit later on) and they are doing well

two are 7 cells and grade 1
one is 9 cells and grade 1

They want to freeze the 9 cell today and wait for the other two to hopefully turn too blastocyst on day 5/6 and then freeze.

feels like positive news so far but still many more hurdles to face. Will get another call and update on Thursday!

They collected 6 eggs so will hear how many fertilised tomorrow. I’m 34 with an amh of about 5ish but a year ago my amh was 12 😭

@ABC1103 How are you doing? Do you have any blastocysts to transfer today? We've got one very low grade embryo which they're transferring this afternoon. According to google our chance of implantation and live birth is somewhere between 13% and 40% - it's going to be a tense couple of weeks.

Hi all, I just wanted to share a positive story. I had IVF frozen embryo transfer in February and am currently pregnant, waiting for my baby boy to join me in two weeks time.

I had 10 eggs collected, all 10 fertilized which was a shock but then only 2 survived to blastocyst (day 5/6 transfer). I was so down, cried my eyes out, doctors were just "oh it is natural selection, 2 is a good outcome." I honestly thought it won't work. I was doing this privately, had no money for another round and was super stressed. Well, the little one stuck and grew and is now kicking me all the time :)

Keep the spirits up, this is a marathon battle and it takes a lot of patience and resilience. But you can do it!!

The embryologist called today to give a day 5 update on the 4 fertilised eggs (out of 8 mature):

• 1 4AA frozen
• 2 were still developing
• 1 was behind but they'll give it more time

I was so relieved to hear that we have at least 1 blastocyst for a frozen transfer 😊

I only just had my call now - the two remaining day 3 embryos didn’t make it to day 5 so there’s only my frozen day 3 left. Feeling extremely deflated and hopeless now. Have been told they will do a day 3 transfer of the frozen one but I’m not feeling hopefully at all right now.

Hey @ABC1103 my successful cycle resulted in 2 eggs both fertilised and I had my day 3 transferred. He is now sat on my lap 5 months old.

I didnt think I had a chance with 2 eggs but here we are.

It aint over. Try to keep your mind straight for the transfer because you just never know!

Hi everyone, I hope you've all had more success after the disappointments of September/October time. Just thought I'd post this update!

When I first posted on this chat I'd just finished my first cycle: 11 eggs, 9 mature, 1 fertilised with ICSI, 1 low grade day 5 blastocyst, BFN.

Well, I've just done my second cycle, this time using PICSI and Calcium Ionophore as part of the ICSI process to try and improve fertilisation and blastocyst rates: 17 eggs, 14 mature, 8 fertilised, 4 day 5 blastocysts including a 5AA and 5AB. Much better result! Our issue is male factor infertility, and the PICSI and Calcium Ionophore definitely seemed to help.

I had a fresh transfer of the 5AA a couple of weeks ago and got my first ever BFP yesterday. :)

I’ve been through another round since so I thought I’d update.

first round: 6 eggs collected, 5 mature, 4 fertilised with ICSI, 1 transferred, bfn

second round: 6 eggs collected, 5 mature, 5 fertilised with ICSI, 2 transferred, bfp but blighted ovum discovered at 7 week scan

Im now mentally gearing myself up to go again. Hoping for similar results to the second round but obv a happier outcome.

This process is the hardest thing I’ve ever done. Love to you all going through it. ❤️
