Anyone else facing a third retrieval in 2023?

Just that really. I'm beyond the point of most IVFers at this stage and there aren't many of us around that seem to have to do multiple retrievals. Thought I'd start a new thread in case there's any other non-newbies in the same boat.

@birdbybird hey, what retrieval and embryo number are you on now? It was a negative today. Did a test in the toilet at work because I was convinced I was having a chemical after i started spotting but it was negative.

I’m upset tonight but I’m definitely adjusting to the idea this might not work for us. We did PGT-A testing of three embryos so I’m dreading the results coming tomorrow or Thursday, probably.

This was embryo 6 for us. 3 and 4 were day 3 strugglers but I still count them in my 6. I had a weird immune reaction at the weekend, I’m sure it was to the embryo. I’m going to push for pred if we have any normals.

@thislittlebird I had retrieval 4 last month and the only embryo that survived to day 5 was abnormal. So it will be retrieval 5 if we go ahead. I have a doctor's appointment tomorrow. I'm with Lister. I think you are too?
I'm lucky if I get one blastocyst a cycle so it seems very expensive.
I've had 3 so far with only one chromosome abnormality each. So feel like I've been so close. The last two tested were both missing chromosome 22. I was so annoyed at the last result being exactly the same as the second last. For a few minutes I thought they'd made a silly mistake.
The first cycle I had where I transferred fresh I had a miscarriage and the products of conception were abnormal so I've tested since even if at the risk of no blastocysts. Plus I'm 42.5 so older than you I'm sure.
You will no doubt get some answers from the pgt-a. You have a chance of a normal if you're testing multiple embryos and immune treatment if transferring any normals sounds like a good idea!

@thislittlebird also meant to say, I've had some immune testing too... so will be going for immune treatment if I ever get any normals. And that's a big 'if'.

@thislittlebird so sorry for your news, it's always heartbreaking, no difference if it was 1st on 6th transfer. Stay strong and take good care of yourself ❤️

@Jx3303 how are you?

thislittlebird · 26/04/2023 07:41

@birdbybird yeah I’m with lister too. I’m sort of annoyed with them. I wanted to take pred and they wouldn’t let me because my NK cells came back ok. Now I feel like they’ve wasted another of my embryos throwing it into a womb that will defend against it. Knowing my luck in this we won’t have any euploids. That call might finish me off if we get it today.

The result was exactly the same? That’s odd. Did they explain it? Have you done karyotyping? Yeah I can imagine that the miscarriage is scary, how far along were you?

I guess I’ll do karyotyping and maybe an ERA before I finally give up and accept I won’t be having a family. I just want to lay in bed today and cry tbh, what a waste of time and money this has all been. I’ve not even told anyone we’re doing it this time so no one knows, I didn’t tell them because it felt like they’d stopped caring/hoping for us anyway when we’d constantly say it failed.

@VO27 thank you

@thislittlebird they said it can happen to get the same chromosome abnormality twice. Ive had 4 embryos tested and two have had the same 22 missing which is a common abnormality. I’ve been karotype tested for 18 and 13 and I think 21. That was all clear. I’ve had a terrible experience with the lister. In fact I’ve made multiple complaints. I had a follow up consultation today which they’ve cancelled at the last minute today. I was told I’d get a call back “shortly” which hasn’t happened 5 hours later. Between 4 -5pm I was at “queue position 1” and didn’t get through in the end. Capitalism has failed if this is the state of private clinics. I had a terrible experience with their main consultant minutes before my egg collection. I’m waiting for a response to my complaint after which I’ll pursue with HFEA.
Im looking into IVI london purely based on the location and that they do Zymot and Imsi. Their google reviews seem a fraction better but it is a pain to change clinics.
Ive heard people get several abnormal before a normal so I wouldn’t give up if I were you. Am in an extremely bad mood after this consult was cancelled. It’s been the third time in as many months.

birdbybird · 26/04/2023 18:31

@thislittlebird i mean it is a pain to change clinics even if it is a shitty one that I am changing from.

@birdbybird they've annoyed me but I have managed to get all issues sorted with some emails to the right people. I had an issue day before EC where I asked them they were doing a particular procedure (that they said they'd do) for DH's sperm prep, and the embryologist called me and made me feel like I had made it up when someone had actually told us this on the phone a couple of months earlier and my consultant backed her up! Then the next day in the hospital room (always the same room, feel like they reserve it for peasants or something???) the lab manager called and agreed with the first person who had spoken to us and not the two the day before. I was very annoyed, but obviously the pay off is we had a very good outcome numbers/blasts wise (I'm nearly 40, he's 41) and 14 collected, 10 mature, 9 made it to day 5 and 5 blasts in total. So i can't complain about that, but I haven't loved the interactions.

I would like to know about your bad experience/complaints but don't want to ask you to post here, feel free to DM me if you're happy to share. I'm interested to know who your consultant is. Did you contact the secretaries today or did they not reply? I've not had a consultation cancelled so far.

I'm not really aware of IVI London? I'll google them, we also need IMSI. I'd like a clinic nearer east than west london really, but some of our experience there has been good, some less good and I can't say I'm set on staying with them. I have a follow up to book and I'm going to see their RI doc.
