How many of your embryos made it to day 5?

Hi all.
I had egg collection yesterday. I had mild OHSS and a soaring oestrogen level so was given a buserelin trigger and told I was on a freeze all cycle.

We got 23 eggs which I thought was great, but then had a call to say only 11 were mature and 6 fertilised. I'm a bit gutted with this, not sure whether I should be or not! I had quite a traumatic stimming phase and egg collection so was hoping I'd never have to go through it again 😬

Did anyone else have 6 eggs fertilised and have a decent amount/nah to freeze? Xx

OHSS unfortunately does often mean lots of the eggs aren't mature/fertilise - I'd work on 50%
Of what you have on day 3 making it to day 5? It's very difficult to predict on day 1 I've had 100% make it to day 5 on some cycles (only 2 eggs) and 2 cycles where less than 50% did (14 eggs)

MGee123 · 02/02/2021 19:34

We had 6 eggs collected, 5 fertilised and 1 deemed viable for transfer which was done fresh on day 5. It hadn't reached full blastocyst stage at that point but they thought it was worth giving it a shot. Positive test 9 days later and a great 12 week scan last week says they were right! It really does only take 1. You might get lucky and have more reach blast stage, plenty of people do, but a drop off is normal so it's worth being prepared for a lower number. Everything crossed for success for you 🤞

elsaesmeralda · 02/02/2021 20:40

I got 17 eggs, 15 mature, 11 fertilised with icsi and 9 made it to day 5. We was lucky so have a lot in the freezer, I hope obviously we don't have to go through them all though. You have a decent amount fertilised so there is a lot of hope!!

jonrik · 02/02/2021 21:17

We had 17 collected, 15 mature, 9 fertilised, 8 on day 2, 2 blasts on day 5 (1 transfer, 1 frozen) and they left another 3 for one more day, we got 1 more frozen from those. So ultimately 3 out of 17. I was hoping for 4 but it's a good result nonetheless. Now just waiting (had my transfer yesterday)

unknownscot · 02/02/2021 22:06

Cycle 1:
22 eggs, 14 fertilised, 1 day 5

Cycle 2:
34 eggs, 5 fertilised, 0 day 5

They are very surprised with our outcome. If you want to chat feel free to ask me more.
Hope you're doing okay xx

Hey I got 22 eggs, 11 mature, 9 fertilised through icsi and 8 made it through to day 5 blasts but only 4 were good enough quality to freeze - 2 As, a B and a C grade. I also had ohss and had a freeze all - had my first FET last week so right in the middle of the 2ww right now.

lucymills1234 · 03/02/2021 11:27

Hi @roxyfoxy89 I had 11 mature eggs and only 5 fertilised, 4 normally, and like you I was disappointed with the fertilisation rate.

I have 3 blasts on day 5 - a 5AA which was a fresh transfer (BFN), a 4BB which is still in the freezer and the third wasn't good enough to freeze.

You're at a horrible stage where your eggs are now out of your body so it all feels out of your control. I know you're wanting answers but how your own situation pans out will be unique to you - your numbers might be the same as someone else's but your eggs are entirely your own!

I know that's not a very motivational answer but my advice would be think about how you can use the time to look after yourself so if there is a transfer, you're mentally and physically ready for it, even more so if you had a hard time during stims/EC. I think this whole process makes us try to think 10 steps ahead and the hardest thing is getting your head around the fact that there is just no way of knowing, otherwise everyone would have first time success.

Lots of luck to you for your wait.

Mancbear88 · 03/02/2021 14:13

I had 42 follicles, 7 eggs, 6 embryos and 4 blasts (3 5AA and 1 6AA).

So whilst we were disappointed with the number of eggs we actually got a decent number of blasts from 6 embryos.

Good luck

indub · 03/02/2021 14:50

#1: 8 eggs, 8 fert, 4 blast (1 baby, 3 FET fails)
#2: 12 eggs, 10 fert, 5 blasts (fingers crossed)

Also had oestrogen 5000ish (borderline ohss) but no nasty symps so pushed on with transfer.

@ivfbeenbusy I've been told 30% is average so I'd be happy with 50%. It does seem sometimes like the less you have the higher percentage make it. Maybe because more energy went into brewing them!

That's great news! Really glad it's worked out for you. I love hearing positive stories like yours.

@elsaesmeralda that's great! I kind of wish I'd gone down the icsi route but because male fertility wasn't an issue for us our clinic didn't suggest it.

@unknownscot oh wow, I'm so sorry to hear that. Have they said why so few make it to blasto stage? xx

@MF1981 good luck with your 2 week wait, it must be such a difficult time. Like a natural cycle 2ww but a million times worse!

Thanks for your kind words. I hope your embryo in the freezer is the one to make you a mama! I'm trying to stay positive but every time I think of getting the phone call on day 5 I feel sick to my stomach. Might sound silly but the only thing that makes me feel better is imagining what I would do if none make it - which is moving to Canada!!!

@indub fingers crossed for round two for you - your fert rate is so good!

My oestrogen 2 days before EC was 21,000! I felt utterly crap. So they had no doubts about getting them all out and on ice.

37 follicles, 19 collected, 12 fertilized, 6 made it to day 5 and then a further one on day 6 so 7 in the freezer. I think one was an AA, 5 AB and the day 6 a BB. Got mild OHSS as well so we froze everything and planning our first FET next week. Good luck OP, as they say, you only need one x

indub · 03/02/2021 22:51

@roxyfoxy89 21000! You must have felt terrible! Hope you're feeling a bit recovered and less bloaty/exhausted now.

kikisparks · 04/02/2021 07:58

12 eggs, 10 fertilised and 4 day 5 blastocysts. Fresh 4AA was an early miscarriage, have a 5BB, 4BC and 4CC left and having my first frozen transfer next Friday.

Yokey · 04/02/2021 08:21

27 eggs, 22 fertilized, 10 blasts, OHSS, 1 FET, 9 still in the freezer.

Everyone's numbers are so different so there's no way of knowing. Do you think 6 seems quite low to you because you started so high with 23 eggs? The drop off rates can seem alarming but for all anyone knows your blast rate could be high. There's no way of knowing but with 6 left in there's good reason to be hopeful. I'm really hoping it's successful for you 🤞

Congratulations @MGee123! Fingers crossed for a BFP for you @jonrik and @MF1981 🤞 Good luck to everyone else here Flowers

Hi @Yokey thanks for your reply. Yes I think because I started with such a high number, 6 fertilised seems really low. They expect 30%-50% will last till day 5 but I'm really concerned that none will make it. Like you say 100% could make it, which would be amazing!

Just had my 3 day update from the clinic. We've got one 9 cell embryo, 2 7 cell embryos, 2 5 cell embryos and one which hasn't progressed at all. I think those are promising but I'm not sure!

OP posts:
Yokey · 05/02/2021 08:54

On my day 3 update, they didn't give me the cell details but they did say I had 6 good, 7 average, and the rest poor. I was then hoping for 6 as best case scenario but got 10 high quality blasts. They called day 6 so I don't know how many were day 5 and how many day 6 (I was too happy to ask!) I also don't know if all the 6 good made it plus 4 average or if there was a change.

From my (admittedly basic) understanding, 5 of yours are in with a chance, with 3 being promising! Sounds like good news Smile. They didn't mention anything else about fragmentation or cell size? If not, I'd assume they were reasonably good. Keeping my fingers crossed for you.
