Is there anyone waiting for iui? See so many posts about ivf, but hardly any for iui?

Hey there - I’m also going through IUI. Had baseline scan today! This is my first cycle...

Chicasimona · 29/10/2020 07:02

Hi ladies,
I'm having consultation in about 2 weeks in regards to the IUI treatment. I agree, it is not too many Iui threads here.
My consultant was pushing me to do IVF straight away but I want to have a go with Iui first.
May I ask how old are you and if you have been diagnosed with anything?

ivftake1 · 29/10/2020 07:32

I did a round of IUI 2 months ago and have just finished a round of IVF.

My thoughts on IUI (sorry it's pretty negative)

It's cheaper on the surface but some think you need 3-6 rounds for success which could make it comparable to ivf costs.

Success rates are low.

All the monitoring and blood tests. This was pretty intense and I was just thinking about whether it was worth it the whole time.

My husband and I had previously said we would do 3 IUI rounds but abandoned that after 1 cycle to cut losses. There is a question mark over whether my tubes are blocked though. If they are IUI is completely useless so I didn't want to waste more time/money.

Ofpalestsilver · 29/10/2020 08:58

Hey there - I'm 34, been TTC for over two years. I have PCOS. I've had issues with periods for many years (I didn't have any for like five years!) But I seem to have plenty of follicles etc. and all the pre-tests etc. showed that my numbers were all in the normal range and my partner fine as well.

I'm trying IUI first because as far as I know, I just don't ovulate so what I really wanted was support getting that bloody egg to make its way down the tubes! :-D We would have done timed intercourse but time is a-ticking so went for IUI first. We'll do 3 cycles I think and then go to IVF. I'm very open to the fact that it might not work but I wanted to give it a go first.

@ivftake1- did your clinic suggest a HyCoSy before you started IUI? I was told that they wouldn't do it unless they made sure my tubes were clear hence the HyCoSy.

Ofpalestsilver · 29/10/2020 09:00

Oh, I should add that I have been pregnant before, in my twenties (which was a complete surprise - no periods and oestrogen levels had previously been almost menopausally low). While that did not progress, I do know that I can get pregnant hence giving IUI a go.

ivftake1 · 29/10/2020 09:08

Yes I had a hycosy and the dye couldn't get through the tubes.

The consultant thinks this is actually due to a spasm caused by the test itself due to the position of the 'blockage' and the fact that I have a son and there's no reason why I would now have two blocked tubes... but it's still inconclusive!

Ofpalestsilver · 29/10/2020 10:15

@ivftake1 - ah flip, that's so annoying . What stage are you in the IVF process at the moment?

I'm in the two week wait!

The only think extra you have to do with ivf is obviously all the injections, but the scans and blood tests were the same amount as iui. Oh, and the egg collection, but that was pretty easy.

Ofpalestsilver · 29/10/2020 10:31

Oh, how exciting! I hope it goes well for you.

I supported my bestie through her IVF last year. She got the BFP first time round. Obviously delighted for her but trying to remain level-headed with my own experiences.

KellyAnne9 · 29/10/2020 12:12

Hi all. Thanks so much for all your replies and experiences.
I have pcos and have had all the tests, scans bloods Clomid etc over the past two years.
Currently taking suprecur and meriofert for first cycle of IUI. If all goes well and cycle isn't abandoned, should have insemination early next week.
Have an appointment tomorrow to see how things are looking!
@Ofpalestsilver we have 3 rounds of IUI available to us too. Even though success rates are low, we thought we'd give it a shot first!
Wishing all of you the best of luck.
Just thought it would be nice to start a thread for support because I feel so isolated throughout it all. Don't know anyone personally who has/is going through infertility

Hello!

We were due to start our first IUI yesterday, but we came down with Covid at the weekend 😩. So needless to say we're now self isolating and going to try again next month.

We've been told to do 3 IUIs then move onto IVF. Our issues is I have a very low ovarian reserve. We've also just done 3 months on Clomid.

Do you know why IUI was suggested first? Sorry you've got covid, terrible timing
Dbop100 · 29/10/2020 21:54

@ivftake1 my consultant said it's worth trying IUI before going straight to IVF because it's less invasive / cheaper. She also said as I'm 34 she's hoping I still have quality eggs, even though the quantity is very low.

DisneyGirl2387 · 30/10/2020 08:03

Just wanted to hop on board to say that I am 38 weeks pregnant with an IUI baby. We were extremely lucky for it to work first time. Mine was a medicated cycle with clomid and menopur injections. I found it really difficult to get any info about IUI so if anyone has any questions please feel free to ask! X

Chicasimona · 30/10/2020 09:02

Hi @DisneyGirl2387 Congratulations to your Bfp.

Can I ask how old are you and if you have been diagnosed with anything particular?

DisneyGirl2387 · 30/10/2020 10:08

@Chicasimona
Thank you! I'm 33. The issue was with me in that I don't ovulate on my own/ weak ovulation. I had clomid for 6 months beforehand but that didn't work. No issues with DH. We were fully expecting to go down the IVF route but wanted to take the 3 IUIs offered to us first.

Peachy1381 · 30/10/2020 10:27

I did an round of IUI last cycle as my IVF cycle needed to be converted as I only have one mature egg. The proceedure was really quick and painless but sadly for us it didn't work.

We get three funded rounds of IUI where we live but our doctors don't think its the right treatment for us (we have MF and also mild PCOS) so we are planning on going straight to IVF.

Good luck - it does work for some people!

TxIUI · 30/10/2020 11:19

I had my first stimulated IUI last friday! We have unexplained and so won’t get a referral on the NHS until we have been trying for two years. So in the interim have decided to try a few rounds of IUI. I understand under NICE guidelines the NHS doesn’t offer IUI for UI in any case, although the statistics do say it can be beneficial. It’s a shame as it’s obviously quite expensive to do it privately.

KellyAnne9 · 30/10/2020 11:48

@DisneyGirl2387 amazing, congratulations!
Thanks. Would be nice to ask questions if needed. I can never find what I'm looking for!

Sadly bad news for me today...too many follicles so they've abandoned cycle.
Got to wait for a call next week to discuss going further if straight to ivf or any other try of iui

@Peachy1381 sorry it didn't work for you. Best of luck with ivf

Hope everyone else is doing ok x

Ofpalestsilver · 30/10/2020 11:49

@DisneyGirl2387 - similar situation to me! I don't really ovulate. I'm hoping for similar good news. Did you have PCOS? And is your BMI normal (if you don't mind me asking?)

Ofpalestsilver · 30/10/2020 11:52

@KellyAnne9 - so sorry to hear that. That must be really disappointing. Is this your first cycle? How many follicles did you have and how many did they find at the start?

KellyAnne9 · 30/10/2020 12:00

@Ofpalestsilver thank you ❤️

We are devastated, but obviously know there's nothing we can do this cycle now. Just hope we have luck with whatever is next.

Yes, first iui cycle. They found 3 waiting, but another 3 were large too that could possibly be released.

I had feeling this could happen due to pco but they halved the normal dose to try and prevent it so it's disheartening that it was cancelled

OP posts:
TxIUI · 30/10/2020 12:21

@KellyAnne9 so sorry to hear that. Hopefully they can adjust your meds for next time and you can proceed. It seems like a bit of imprecise science as it’s not clear how each person will react to the stimulation but hopefully after this cycle they will have more information. Are you still able to try with timed intercourse?

DisneyGirl2387 · 30/10/2020 12:23

@KellyAnne9 I'm so sorry to hear your cycle has been abandoned. Sending you hugs as I know that this journey is such a rollercoaster of emotions. Maybe they can change your medication for next time? X

@Ofpalestsilver my BMI was 24 when we started. No, I don't have pcos. I only ever really had 1 or 2 dominant follicles on clomid. My AMH was ok, just slightly below average for my age. I was the same as you and just thought we might as well give it a try! What stage are you at with it? X

Ofpalestsilver · 30/10/2020 12:52

@DisneyGirl2387 - I had my baseline scan on Thursday so very early in the whole process but we've been looking into this for over a year. We did all the tests last summer then decided to wait cos we were getting married. The wedding ended up being cancelled cos of Covid and then we found it hard to get everything we needed to get treatment up and running so it feels like it's lasted for a while. I'm glad to finally be underway. My BMI is high these days so that might increase the challenge. I'm glad you were lucky first time round. :)
