Anyone else waiting on Homerton Fertility to open?

New referral to Homerton Hosp for fertility and the hospital is still not taking new patients, I've been told to call back in September. I am so exasperated, we've been waiting 6 months now. Is anyone in the same boat?

OP posts:

I have just heard back from them and they confirmed minimum wait for me is 6-9 months. To be fair, I have already looked into other arrangement cause I knew it was going to be the case. At least I know for sure now.

I have been following this thread through February, anxious that the delays would impact on me too. I was referred in February 2021, and had my first appointment in May 2021. I was due to start treatment in my February cycle. The IVF nurse had told us in early January that we may be delayed by a month or so based on capacity issues, but that we would be contacted in advance. She told us to call in the first day of my cycle regardless. On the basis of that information, and having seen comments on here about delays, I was pleasantly surprised to be called back by the clinic last Tuesday to say I was being prioritised and would be called about medication to start treatment the following week...

However! On Monday I was emailed by the clinic (in response to a query I'd made about something related to my treatment) with the template response circulating on this forum that treatment would be delayed. No reference to the fact I'd been told it was going ahead, or acknowledgment of the question I'd asked. I queried this and received the email that it would be an additional 6-9 months.

I had already had concerns about the clinic from the lack of communication and often conflicting information we were given regarding other treatments, but my trust in them is now totally shot and I can't proceed with them. I would have been upset by the delay, but I'm particularly angered by the fact that they confirmed I was going ahead and so I'd started to plan and look forward in those six days - it was like having the rug pulled out from underneath me. And the fact that they have just sent out a template email (riddled with spelling errors) shows a total lack of care.

I've decided to go private and will have to take the cost, and the delays of now having to redo tests. I've wasted a year of my life with Homerton - nearly a year and a half since first going to my doctor - all for nothing. Furious doesn't even begin to describe it.

Surely the CCG should be considering the outcomes of patients and liberalising their policy to allow people to port their funding to clinics which can actually treat them. I've written to them - perhaps if they hear from enough of us it'll make them think about it.

@ALS87, I'm gobsmacked and completely devastated to hear this happened to you. I am on exact same time line as you meant to have start this month got the email to say my treatment will be delayed again only having chased myself. Didn't get a call back within the 7 to 14 days as promised. I too am now seeking private options. I'm so upset as I have diminished reserve due to cancer treatment and age so don't really have the time to muck about with constant lack of communication or honesty. I truly hope every person on this thread gets the chance they deserve to at least try for a family in an empathetic and stress free way. Life is in the waiting for so many of us. X

Hello everyone! Just wanted to let you know that someone on Peanuts said that most likely the hometown won't do treatment in April as they'll need to close the lab due to lack of staff.

Now this is going to delay everything even further. Can we all get together and demand our CCG to reallocate the funds to private clinics? I suggest that all of us write an email and recommend that we asks for them to reimburse IVF private treatments in a clinic of our choice. Who would be up for it? Open to any other suggestions

No surprises there! I got two letters a week apart apologising for the delays and that it will be at least 6 months before treatment would start. So that's September at the earliest. I am up to writing a letter to them expressing my concerns and requesting reimbursement for funds to go privately. I am away this week but my husband is quite good at writing things so will get him to tap away at the keyboard!

Hi lovely ladies, I had my first appointment with another clinic and they mentioned something Homerton fertility is now closed down. I don’t have any details but wanted to share what I heard and maybe you can speak to your GPs to help you get the NHS funding transferred to another clinic. Good luck!

Francesmalin · 18/03/2022 14:24

Did you go privately or a new NHS founded hospital?

K8dferXdder · 18/03/2022 14:38

Unfortunately my borough covers only 1 cycle which we used already without success. We were about to start a frozen self-funded cycle but we decided since we are paying to move the frozen embryo to a private clinic as Homerton were too slow.

Francesmalin · 20/03/2022 18:40

I have sent the email to the North London CCG asking for a solution and funds to use towards a private clinic. Please do the same. We can have better chances if we demand actions as a group

Hi Frances , also under north london CCG,

Could you send me a template email that you sent and I will amend to me and get it sent straight away.
Like you said , the more of us that make noise the more they can't ignore us!

Francesmalin · 22/03/2022 12:40

@Peap0d sent in DM. Let me know if you get it!

Got it! Thanks :)

Hello! I had the same email/letter. I had my first ivf last summer, followed by covid, long covid, several bereavements. I am really annoyed as I was told by Homerton to wait until Jan when I went in late Nov because I could enjoy Christmas! Are they allocating us to other London NHS clinics, I would love to go to CRGH/UCL. My relationship has really suffered with all of this waiting and playing games, my first ivf was abandoned due to them giving me the wrong treatment plan and meds. I've had 2 missed calls from consultants but no number was left and when I called they put through to switchboard. Such a joke.

hopefully2021 · 06/04/2022 13:24

Hi everyone, joining this conversation as I was due to start IVF at homerton in July but received a letter last week saying this will be delayed by at least 6 months due to staffing challenges
completely gutted as I've already been TTC for 2 years and can't afford to go private
Just feels like my life is on hold until treatment starts!

K8dferXdder · 06/04/2022 14:35

I was told the fertility centre is closed now. I heard it is a common practice NHS units to be transformed into a private unit because they are at a loss or something I don’t understand well. If you have a chance to ask your CCG to move you to a different centre, it will be ideal. I don’t know the process as we moved privately to another clinic.

Justrelax2022 · 06/04/2022 19:18

Hi everyone, I was horrified to see all that you’re all going through and thought I would chime in with my experience.

We were given December 21 as our cycle start date, so worked towards that date for months and months. Several bad experiences later - misdiagnosis, lost blood tests etc, we headed to our nurse app in November.
She pretty much laughed us out the building and told us they were oversubscribed and we were not a priority. She also said ‘you’ve got nothing to lose here, if you don’t leave with a baby it’s ok because you didn’t come in with one.’

Regardless of this, I thought it best to email on day one of my December period. After no answer I did raise the issue with the PALS service.

In January we spent a thousand pounds having private consultations + investigations as we couldn’t deal with Homerton anymore, and then later that month they rang me out the blue and the nurse told me I was meant to be starting my tablets the next day but ‘it’s ok we’ll skip straight to stims’

On day 7 of my injections I went in for a scan. The doctor told me I would have all embryos frozen but that he needed to inform me that there was currently a ban on the clinic for performing FETS, but ‘not to worry things should be normal by april’

I questioned why this was the case and they told me there was a new lab director who was ‘figuring things out.’ I cannot believe they did not tell me this prior to me starting injections, as I would have not continued had I known.

We had our embryos frozen and waited for an app. I had to chase three times to get an appointment, we got one nearly three months after egg retrieval.

She told us the news that you’ve all had too. That the clinic is suspending all treatment until further notice. She told me the embryologists had left and they were trying to outsource to other NHS hospitals.

We’re now in the position where we have to restart investigations privately and pay to courier our embryos to the new place. We are distraught and heartbroken. Dealing with Homerton has truly been an awful, traumatic experience. I get shivers walking past that building.

I’m self employed and for every pointless appointment in the last couple of years, for every repeat blood test, I’ve had to take a full day off work. I’ve lost thousands in earnings!

Reading the latest HFEA report from Dec 21 it seems they had major concerns over the person who holds the actual license at Homerton hospital. However the excuse I was given was that they didn’t have enough embryologists.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE raise your concerns to Homerton PALS service.

You can also submit a formal complaint to:

[email protected]

If you are in North East London CCG, please write to your local MP and raise concerns. As citizens we should have had a CHOICE of clinic that we were referred to. I never had this and went directly to Homerton. Each CCG should legally have 4 contracts with clinics.

You can also email your CCG, find out what other units are funded by it, approach that other unit and get another GP referral

If anyone needs to talk or rant I’m here. I am honestly shocked by what has happened and how they can just cease from operating like this. I’m sorry that we all have to go through this, but take it from my experience and jump ship now if you’re able to.

KLS2222 · 06/04/2022 20:46

@Justrelax2022
I am so sorry to hear about your fiasco with the Homerton, sounds like you have really been through it.
My experience is similar to you in terms of lost blood test and SA results. As well as completely unprofessional and unkind comments from Homerton staff- the first Dr I saw asked me if I was anorexic. Then asked me again if I was anorexic and if I had ever made myself sick whilst performing the trans vaginal scan! I can laugh about it now but at the time I was horrified, especially as my husband couldn't attend the appointment due to the hospitals Covid restrictions.

I saw the below update on the Homerton website at the start of the week- so I think we may have another update end of next week? Hopefully.

Service update 4 April 2022
We are currently experiencing some extraordinary and unforeseen operational challenges within our fertility service at Homerton Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, including a shortage of staff.
Affected patients are being written to and should receive letters from us the week commencing Monday 4 April. We are working hard to address these urgent challenges and anticipate that we will be able to resume a normal service at Homerton within the next 6 months. We apologise for any distress this may cause and want to assure you that in the meantime we are doing all that we can to find alternative solutions to ensure treatment can occur for patients sooner than that, which includes securing capacity at other NHS centres for our patients.

We are awaiting finalisation of these plans, and we will be back in touch with patients no later than Friday 15 April with more definitive information about the next steps of their treatment. In the meantime we have written to all patients with this information as well as information of help and support which is available, including counselling.
If you have any other queries or concerns, please email [email protected] and we will arrange for a member of the clinical team to call you.

KLS2222 · 06/04/2022 20:50

@Justrelax2022
Think it's also pretty clear that the issues at the Homerton are not knock on issues as a result of the pandemic. But seem more like internal operational issues.

Justrelax2022 · 06/04/2022 21:47

@KLS2222 I can’t believe a professional medic spoke to you like that, it’s totally abhorrent 😞
Yes they’ve used covid excuse for long enough. It’s not the case. The only way you get a mass walk out of staff is if there’s major management issues. If the embryologists have left that is, who knows if the excuse I was given was the correct one. It’s a different reason each time ; covid, new lab director, oversubscribed, now no embryologist.

I went in last week to pick up my medical notes and the reception staff were still booking people in for SA. I feel so awful for people just starting this process with no idea about the state of that department or what’s to come.

K8dferXdder · 06/04/2022 22:37

I commented with one of the nurses in the private clinic and she told me it is something she has seen in other NHS fertility clinics. Because they rely mostly on NHS, they don’t make as much money and they transform them into private units after that. I don’t really have overview of how it works exactly but feel sorry for all people on the queue with hopes. I also lost 2 critical years of my life 37-39, although I must admit that they did investigate everything properly. Can’t complaint with the service I received, just it was soooo slow…

Sheknowsnodifferent · 07/04/2022 15:30

Someone I recently met had a similar experience with terrible service at the Homerton and as time wasn't on her side (mid forties) she went private. She's just had a baby and her consultant said that they were offered to consult Homerton and actually accepted a role to improve the service, only to be so shocked that they terminated their employment immediately and refused to work with them due to not wanting their name associated with the diabolical running of the clinic.
Update: I spoke with a consultant who tried to give me some spiel that felt like she was reading from a script. When I went through all of my experiences with the clinic in a calm and factual manner she was dumbfounded. I reiterated the negligence myself and others have expressed on this forum, along with the above story and an admission of failings when I first raised issues with PAL's. The consultant said they are looking to outsource to Hammersmith which is miles away. I like many others have been left traumatised by the lack of care from Homerton.

Sheknowsnodifferent · 07/04/2022 15:32

@justrelax2022 wow laughing at you! I had one put the phone down on me last year when I said that noone answered my calls and it is unprofessional. I'm sure there are many amazing nhs fertility nurses, I just haven't met one at Homerton.

I had my first appointment at Homerton in mid-March as was told my position on list for IVF was due cycle of Aug 2023 in 17 months!
That was before the latest message on their website about delays.

I’ve written to my CCG as doctor has confirmed they cannot refer me elsewhere but am not holding out much hope

Has anyone had any luck with getting onto today's webinar?
