Anyone doing ivf at 40+

lucieloos · 21/12/2019 22:52

We're considering doing a couple more rounds of ivf at 40.5 years old. We have 2 children already but still feel someone is missing.

Is anyone else starting or already having treatment at 40+ and would like to share the journey?

Thank you so much for the replies. Does anyone have any tips for egg quality, any one using dhea? Doctor says its not good to use with IUI and we have 3 of those paid for and one ivf via the NHS. Thank you for the helpful comments.

Goonbear · 15/04/2020 21:53

Leala20, how do you feel about donor egg? I'm not sure, just feel so strange that it will be someone else's dna. I wish I was the only one going through this awful news as I wouldn't wish it on anyone but helps to know I'm not alone if that makes sense? Our doctor said never say never but natural conception highly unlikely.

Leala20 · 17/04/2020 09:13

Hi Goonbear, i have no issues with dna. I am just happy to be able to have the opportunity to have a baby. There’s a lot of useful support and guidance prior to egg donation and reading/ hearing stories like this makes it more personal
www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/articles/4c5cf2H6wm0409hbCkQF7lF/i-used-donor-eggs-to-have-my-children

For us at the moment this is the only option of me falling pregnant and having heard 50 percent success chances versus 1-5 percent is empowering. I still secretly believe as I don’t want to lose hope but looking forward to when we can do it post lockdown.

Blondeshavemorefun · 17/04/2020 12:15

I took dhea and sure why I had good eggs for a bird my age

De. My friend used own eggs for first but as older then used de

Her de child looks more like her then her own egg

And one of the ladies I worked for used de as was almost 50

Had twins at 49 and again they looked like her and not dad whose sort it was

So I am convinced that preg mums dna does go through placenta to baby

Goonbear · 17/04/2020 21:18

Wow, some really positive considerations. Thank you both. Yes your right, just the opportunity is a blessing. I think I just need a bit more time before tackling donor egg. Thinking of you all and good luck. Let's hope we are back in the running by June 🍀🤞

Mari0000 · 16/05/2020 12:21

Hi everyone, 41, will start my first round of IVF on June 6th. We initially contacted Reprofit and Barnabei but we got stuck in Italy bc of the covid lockdown, so we decided to try in Italy even though considerably more expensive. We just can't afford to lose more time.
Will try with my own eggs first and will consider de if I don't respond well.
I am wondering if it is too late to take DHEA or COQ10 with only 3 weeks before starting the injections?

Leala20 · 16/05/2020 13:57

I heard they take about 3 months to show results ( I am on month 5 so still waiting) so not sure! Great you’re organising it all now and can travel to get there. I heard a lot of positive things about this clinic and joined one online seminar

Anxiousbuthopeful · 16/05/2020 14:11

Hi @Mari0000 - I live in Italy and am considering starting IVF in June. Can I ask where you are and where you are having it done? Thanks! C.

TulipsTwoLips · 19/05/2020 20:20

Can I ask what your AMH and FSH levels were @Blondeshavemorefun ? I'm 43 and interested to know what they count as good eggs for us old birds!

Thanks Smile

Anxiousbuthopeful · 19/05/2020 21:28

Not sure about good eggs! At 41 (almost 42) I had a poor 0.4 AMH and 7 antral follicles. Anyone have any luck with similar stats?

Blondeshavemorefun · 19/05/2020 21:52

Hi @TulipsTwoLips

I will need to check abs at work at the moment

But I think my amh was 3.8/4

And fsh was 7

Only as they are are lucky numbers for lottery (4&7) etc And when they said them I was wow as fab numbers and meant I was in the optimil bracket

And tbh rare for my age

TulipsTwoLips · 19/05/2020 23:07

Wow, they do sound good!

Blondeshavemorefun · 19/05/2020 23:46

But that’s rare

But they did improve after taking dhea

Will have to hunt through my notes / started ivf at think 40 and I’m almost 47 now so some things Brain is hazy

TulipsTwoLips · 20/05/2020 08:28

Thanks @Blondeshavemorefun. I had thought my AMH was decent at 13.5 but I've now realised that is in pmol and everyone else is talking about ng, which I think puts me at around 1.9 Sad

FSH is 6.8

Blondeshavemorefun · 20/05/2020 20:20

@TulipsTwoLips yes it’s confusing when different numbers

I was given this by my clinic tho was 7yrs ago so may be our of date

But from what you said yes 13 , is low (hugs)

But results can chnage. Diet and dhea

What has your clinic said about results

Anyone doing ivf at 40+
lucieloos · 20/05/2020 22:05

@TulipsTwoLips 13pmol is amazing for almost 42! Mine was 7 when I was 35. I went on to have 2 children from eggs taken when I was 36 and 37. It sounds like if you were to do ivf you should have a decent enough response but in our 40s quality is a much bigger problem.

@Mari0000 and @Anxiousbuthopeful
Well more for Mari as it seems you have chosen a clinic... What is your clinic policy on freezing embryos?
I don't know if the law has changed but I believe they used to restrict the number you could freeze.
Maybe with a low AMH and not many embryos to freeze it's not a consideration but I'm curious as so many Italians travel for IVF.

@Anxious 7 antral follicles is not bad at all, my clinic said that's a good indication of how many eggs they might collect. It can vary too, so my next cycle I'm not doing it if antral follicle count on the low side for me.

@TulipsTwoLips my AMH was 2 last summer and since then I've had treatment, I'm never going to lay a dozen eggs but decided for me it was worth a try.

Blondeshavemorefun · 21/05/2020 13:39

I froze 6 embryos in Madrid in early 2016

MrsLouB · 21/05/2020 13:55

my AMH is 2.5 and we had 9 mature eggs collected 7 fertilised and 3 made it through to day 5 we are on the last one now. but the consultant said that because of my age 40 that he would consider egg donation as although eggs good they could have chromo issues so i am not sure what to think now

JeNeBaguetteRien · 21/05/2020 16:00

Hi @Blondeshavemorefun I'm also having treatment in Spain.
Italy's laws around assisted conception are quite strict, I don't know how much has changed but friends there travelled to Spain too as they had a limit on the number of embryos they could freeze.
As far as I know they don't treat same sex couples or single women either.

@MrsLouB fingers crossed for this FET and you may not have to face that dilemma.

MrsLouB · 21/05/2020 16:15

thanks @JeNeBaguetteRien we had a BFP on our last but sadly ended at 6-7 weeks x mixed emotions now

JeNeBaguetteRien · 21/05/2020 16:21

Oh that's rotten Mrs Lou to have your hopes raised and dashed, sorry for your loss 💐
Really hoping this will be the one for you. And if it sadly is not will be here to listen.

Blondeshavemorefun · 21/05/2020 20:04

Sorry to hear that @MrsLouB 💐

Wonder why Italy is diff from Spain

Most of Europe seem open and relaxed and cheaper lol

Anxiousbuthopeful · 24/06/2020 09:54

Dear all. Starting my first IVF cycle today. I was given Orgalutran for days 2-5, then Elonva, then Orgalutran again and then Gonasi for the trigger shot. Have poor AMH. Has anybody had a similar protocol and what was the result?!

Mari0000 · 24/06/2020 10:59

Hello from Italy.
I had the pick up on Sunday. 6 eggs, 4 mature, 2 fertilized. We are on the 5 days wait. Will get a call either Friday o Saturday (in 2-3 days).
Was very disappointed that only 2 had fertilized :( but who knows, fingers crossed that these are good eggs. We will do PGT.
I'm also preparing to talk to Barabeu in Spain for either a second IVF or donor eggs. Even though we have been so happy with our clinic in Italy , I hear Spain has the highest rates of success.
