Anyone doing ivf at 40+

We're considering doing a couple more rounds of ivf at 40.5 years old. We have 2 children already but still feel someone is missing.

Is anyone else starting or already having treatment at 40+ and would like to share the journey?

Hi, I'm 42 and will be 43 in November. I've been with the NHS for Ivf, having checks and scans. Also I had polyps removed last year, and I have another 7lbs to lose before I can start IVF. I'm single so I'll be using sperm donor. I'll be going back to my GP for the go ahead on 4th august. Does anyone know of time delays for Wales? And will I be shortlisted for my age? Just wondering and any help would be greatfull. X

Anxiousbuthopeful · 08/08/2020 17:03

Hello everyone. I had a 6wk + 2d scan yesterday and 3mm fetal pole with no heartbeat. Apparently should be there by now, I am very worried.

ACAL · 08/08/2020 17:20

@Sian7919 - sorry for the delay - yes I do go to ARGC - it is pricey but it all depends on whether you need/do the immunes treatments. My two successful rounds cost c. £16k but I did need immunes throughout.

Giraffeskills · 08/08/2020 19:30

Oh no @Anxiousbuthopeful, I'm really sorry. I was wondering how you were doing. What did they say at the scan, will they scan you again? I think a lot of clinics don't do the first scan until 7w because 6w is quite early to be sure of seeing a heartbeat, but I don't know about the size. Hoping for the best for you. x

Blondeshavemorefun · 11/08/2020 21:41

@Anxiousbuthopeful we went at 6w something and no heartbeat

But clinic said come back and 7w there was

They generally say no scans till 7w for this reason

Hope the next scan showed better news

Anxiousbuthopeful · 12/08/2020 07:20

Have booked it for this morning. Still won’t be definitive but close enough... Thanks for your messages, I will let you know.

Sian7919 · 12/08/2020 09:19

@Anxiousbuthopeful I'm so sorry, this must be a really worrying time. Keeping everything crossed for you. I hope the scan goes ok.xx

@ACAL thanks for your reply. When you say immunes treatment, what did that involve exactly. I do have an autoimmunne condition, so this may be relevant for me.
@Allyb16 I don't have any knowledge of the healthcare system in Wales, but I am wishing you lots of luck.
I haven't started my IVF treatment yet, I am waiting for the educational session and then I believe we will start. Fingers crossed.

Anxiousbuthopeful · 12/08/2020 09:25

Hi all, weak heartbeat detected. Not game over yet... but still very uncertain. Back in a week!

ACAL · 12/08/2020 11:04

Wonderful news @Anxiousbuthopeful!! So so pleased for you. Just take it bit by bit. Keeping everything crossed for you.
@Sian7919 - so I’ve never really understood the science fully but essentially at ARGC they measure your cytokines and NK cells and if they are elevated you are put on a series of drips. I can’t pretend I know how it works but for my first pregnancy I was having a drip every 4 weeks or so from pretty early on until about 20 weeks. For my second slightly shorter til 16 weeks. It’s pricey but seemed to work for me.

Hi all, just saying hello really.

I'm 41 and on the stims phase of my first fresh cycle. No previous babies. Good amh and follicle count, but not responding to stims quite as well as we'd have hoped.

I had a MC when I was 38, and have been going through the investigations/partner treatment since then. Until it was all delayed by covid!

Age is definitely a complicating factor. I can get two rounds on the nhs until I'm 42... so 3.5 years of delay has been a bit traumatic! Now that it's all happening it's almost hard to believe.

@Anxiousbuthopeful I caught up on the last few messages, so glad you have a heartbeat- wishing you luck and stickiness

Hello Everyone - joining this thread very late.. I'm 41, OH is 47, neither of us have kids - only been together 2 years and whilst I would have loved to tried before, havne't been lucky enough to be in the right relationship / situation.

Feeling like I have a long journey ahead though - AMH at 0.5 and FSH on the high side. Plus I have a history of Cysts and potential adhesions from previous ops. currently on waiting list for another laparoscopy but that has been totally screwed by COVID, and knowing that time isn't on my side starting to investigate IVF Alongside. iv'e been advise my only hope (and still slim) is Mild IVF.. and if that doesn't work I may have to look at going the donar route.

Investigating IVF clinics and have spoken to a specialist based out in Athens (who was recommended) but now considering CREATE. would love any recommendations though... want to give us a chance (even if slim) of having using my own eggs....

Anxiousbuthopeful · 18/08/2020 11:44

No heartbeat. Very sad but entirely expected after the last couple of scans. Now trying to figure out what to do next. D&c or wait?

lucieloos · 18/08/2020 12:29

@Anxiousbuthopeful I'm so very sorry. Sending hugs. Take care of yourself lovely.

@Anxiousbuthopeful so sorry 💐💐

Giraffeskills · 18/08/2020 20:14

So sorry @Anxiousbuthopeful. Give yourself a couple of days before you decide about D&C, look after yourself.

Anxiousbuthopeful · 18/08/2020 21:18

Thank you for your kind words. Am determined to try again as soon as possible.

ACAL · 18/08/2020 22:10

@Anxiousbuthopeful - am so sorry to hear this, it’s just really, really shit when it happens. Thinking of you 💐

Anxiousbuthopeful · 16/09/2020 11:47

Hello everyone, just a quick update from me. My doctor said I’d have to wait a cycle out to do another round of fresh IVF, but said that I could do a freeze-only round immediately. I am about to get my first post D&C period so running around to get injections and things lined up. I am keen to get cracking, and also would like to maybe look into embryo banking rather than doing fresh cycles. I am 42 and fear that I may not have many attempts left

Anxiousbuthopeful · 16/09/2020 11:52

How is everyone doing?

Mari0000 · 16/09/2020 18:53

Hello @Anxiousbuthopeful thanks for the update! We have decided to go for the donor egg route following the poor response of our IVF in June. Will should be ready by November

Anxiousbuthopeful · 17/09/2020 19:52

Oooh @Mari0000 - how exciting! Where are you doing it?

I am also hoping for some benchmarking from the group. 4 weeks post d&c i took a blood test, convinced that my period was coming. Beta hcg positive (9.8). Is it normal for it to still be positive after a full month? Have the obvious, unlikely hope that it may be a new pregnancy but I know the odds are very poor.

Anxiousbuthopeful · 01/10/2020 06:09

Hello everyone, quick update from me. Starting new IVF round (freeze only I think) but with just 4 Antral follicles to start with, so cancellation looking likely. I am not sure why this cycle is so much worse than my last one, only 4 months ago! Is there a lot of variability between cycles, do you know? Or is this new normal now? My doctor was quite glum about it, but is not very positive in general.

Sian7919 · 01/10/2020 07:16

Hi @Anxiousbuthopeful I’m not sure. But I’d be interested to hear other people‘a answers too x

Sian7919 · 01/10/2020 07:20

@KTD79 how are you getting on? Did you decide on a clinic? I think I’m going to try another 2 rounds of short protocol and then mild IVF after that if they don’t work. It’s not a great thought really and not sure whether to start my next IVF in oct which would we one natural bleed in between my last and only failed cycle. I have an exam in Nov. my dr said it was up to me and there was no reason not to. Take care x
