What will gynaecologist do next?

Hi all. SO and I have been ttc 19 months. I've had lots of blood tests and a scan which confirmed PCOS and also that I'm not ovulating. I've seen a gynae previously privately and she was the one who sent me for the scan. This is now on the NHS and I'm just wondering what action could be taken next?

Could be a few things. They might prescribe clomid (like they just did with me). They might want you to have an hsg or laporoscopy or similar. Or they might want more tests. Or they might suggest iui or ivf depending on all of your circumstances. Yes, it's a minefield. I try to anticipate the worst and then everything else is a pleasant surprise...

Sorry you're going through this too. Your situation sounds reasonably similar to mine!

In this situation I had a laparoscopy, clomid then IVF which worked Good luck to you

Reading this I thought it was mine!

I too have PCOS and don't ovulate. Been ttc almost 2 years. My experience... was as followed:

Feb - Appointment with gyne where she referred me to the top gyne in my area and also for a HSG for me and Sperm Analysis for partner.

March - Had my HSG (which I herd horrible things about ... but it was completely fine) although I did get stuck in the hospital gown! Eeek. Haha.

May - Had another appointment with top gyne who explained the process moving forward and that she was prescribing clomid.

June - I started provera and then From CD2 to CD6 I took clomid and responded amazing... just didn't fall pregnant.

I'm now on my 4th round of clomid now.

This is a very interesting article! I am in the same position as you, was diagnosed two months ago and waiting for a referral to the hospital gynaecologist.

Been trying for seven months, had no period for five months lost some weight (7 pounds so far) and they returned but super heavy or sour light.

Have your periods also changed from pcos?

I've always had irregular periods for as long as I can remember and my mum had often suggested I could have PCOS. Because I didn't have any other signs though we just brushed it off. I went on the pill at the end of 2014 and came off at the start of January 2016 when we started ttc and since then I've had bleeding thats lasted 10 weeks, or weeks have gone by with no bleeding at all. Sometimes I have spotting and sometimes its so heavy I've never seen anything like it.

My appointment is Tuesday, so I'll post an update then :)

Obviously having all that bleeding I went to the docs and was referred to a gynaecologist. I decided to go private instead and the one I saw referred me for a scan which is what confirmed I have PCOS (I think that was about July?)

That sounds like me but the longest period ive had is 2.5 weeks!

Let me know how u get on! I was lucky my dr sent me for an ultrasound as my blood hormone levels were abnormal. I had to wait three months to get mu diagnosis!

just to give you an update

ive been referred for more blood tests which I have already had done so a little frustrating, however the gynae said the results before were inconclusive so would like them done again. I also had some swabs repeated. If all comes back fine I will have my tubes checked which I'm really scared about ://// they said they won't prescribe me with anything until these processes have all been done.

I didnt realise they also check your tubes! How come they do that?

Maybe they just want to make sure your hormones levels havent changed. My dr made me have my lh and fsh retested with an ultrascan to check my results were the same.

Did she say what happens when they have checked yr tubes and bloods. Are they doing the insulin resilence test? And is the next step metamorphin (not sure how u spell that).

Hi guys I've been trying to conceive for 2 1/2 years I have pcos also, I was referred to gynaecologist last September where they gave me clomid I took 6 rounds of that and got pregnant in April however I miscarried at 9 weeks. Just been to see my gynaecologist today and they've given me letrozole to try. It really is a minefield! I also had a miscarriage in 2015 so now I'm really hoping letrozole will work. Has anybody else been prescribed it?

No not really I just get told 'you've been pregnant before so it will probably happen' which is not helpful at all 🙈 How are things with you?

Littleonek - I think after my tubes are checked, if they are fine she will prescribe me something, but if not then I guess look at treatment options (usually ivf). I'm convinced because I have had chlamydia in the past that they are going to be blocked.

I'm so scared and I just want the test right now so I know. It doesn't sound very nice though - they put some coloured dye in and an xray picks up where the dye is filling up

That makes sense, its good they are checking everything! How long do u have to wait for it?

I had to go wait two months for my scan and it felt like forrreeever!!!

Are you peridos mega heavy with pcos? Im on day 16, still super heavy, cramps and have to rush to the loo every three hours!! It doesnt look like its going to stop anytime soon!

Hi cately they will probably try you on clomid first when your tubes have been checked? Did they say they were going to check your tubes first? They didn't bother with me just gave me the medication, they said after I've taken this new medication then they will do a laparoscopy (don't kno if that's the right word) and poss ovarian drilling.

Littleonek I haven't actually been booked into it yet because they wanted a copy of my partners analysis results (he had them done under a different area so they didn't have access to them) so that's frustrating as it's set us back a bit. I had to wait about 3 weeks for my scan but I had gone private and the private gynae referred me so I'm wondering if perhaps that had sped things up

And yep my periods have been so heavy sometimes its ridiculous. I hope yours settles down soon!

18mnthsandcounting she said she wouldn't prescribe me anything until I've had my tubes checked as it won't work if my tubes are blocked. Also because I've had chlamydia in the past that can often damage tubes so maybe she wants to check for that reason. I've already convinced myself that they are blocked and my life is over.

My periods took five months to return and I think they came back as I joined the gym, lost 7 pounds and ate less sugar. Now theyve been back four months but are two weeks late and super heavy!

Im chasing the hospital tomorrow as they said to call back tomorrow if ive not heard about my appointment! Hopefully I wont have to wait months for an appointment.

I need to focus on my diet now as they took it down as 30 and anything over I've read they don't always prescribe. I also want to lose weight for myself as I have been more depressed and lost confidence since I've put so much on. My diet is so bad I know I need to change it it's just so hard!

Do you mean 30 bmi? I got mine down to 27 in three months by just getting less carbs and sugar. Treat carbs and sugar as fat and then it will fall off!

The first two weeks are hard then its easier. My diet was awful! I would eat mcdonalds and dominos at least once a week, a packet of biscuits every few days. Took me ages to get out of the i feel so fat and upset im just going to eat more crap!

I want to lose weight so bad, especially with pcos I know it could really help. I've joined a couple of fitness classes which I hope I stick to but I need to change my diet as well.
I'm the same, I'd have take away once a week and then eat out, and I'll always 'treat myself' to a bar of chocolate.
I feel a bit more motivated at the moment though so I hope I'll start seeing results soon

Once you start losing weight it will be motivating!

So I called up the hospital today and my hospital appointment is in three months time!! that’s ages away!!!

Waiting times are so frustrating which I why I went private at one point and it made such a difference. I'm not sure if that's an option for you but if it is I'd definitely look into it. I paid £150 to see a gynae and waited 3 weeks (the NHS referral took 6 months) and she referred me for the scan I had. That diagnosed pcos and since then I feel the ball has really been moving.

Hopefully those three months go quickly for you. Keep the weight coming off (and well done for already managing to lose!!) and you never know maybe things will happen before you even have your scan! X

Ive had my ultrasound and blood test on the nhs and now im waiting for my gynaecologist appointment, have to wait three months on the nhs for that! Not sure on the next stages, my dr said a ferility clinic if the gynaecologist cant help as im young (27) they should be able to give me treatment to help me ovulate.

How much did you have to pay for your gynaecologist appointment as im thinking of going private for that as three months is a very loong time!
