IVF thin lining at first appointment!

Hello, I guess I'm looking for some sort of encouragement really. So we finally are on the road to IVF when I feel we have fallen at the first hurdle. We knew we had a low sperm count anyway (10 million) but I had an internal scan today. The doctor said that my uterus lining was pretty thin. I'm a week after my period and its measuring 4.5mm so she's asked for a more in depth scan in a months time.

In January this year I had a similar scan and I remember the doctor saying it was nice an thick and I must be due on my period soon (I came on a few days later) the IVF doctor seemed to be a bit more reassured by this but I guess I'm asking if anyone has any experience of this?

I'm now so worried about IVF being impossible if I have thin uterus lining.

Hi, will write a proper reply when I get a moment but just wanted to say I have persistent thin lining issues and sadly it's become a bit of a specialist subject. Just wanted to add a couple of words of encouragement - I know you'll get good advice and support on the thread linked above.

The way your lining is now isn't necessarily how it will always be - it may vary cycle to cycle, and your clinic will be able to adjust the drugs accordingly. So you might get a nice thick lining when it comes to cycle time!

I had a very thin lining throughout several IVF cycles (frozen embryos; we had several attempts at thickening the lining but abandoned each time). Eventually we managed to get the lining a bit thicker but still way below optimal, but together with the clinic decided to give it a go. Two embryos transferred, one implanted and DD was born in January. We never found a cause despite multiple tests, but it can be done!

Good luck with the IVF. I well remember that feeling of disappointment with each new thing that goes wrong, it's so hard when you know there's already a problem to have another obstacle in your path. But keep your spirits up - medical science is a wonderful thing and there's every chance it can work for you.

Thank you both for your replies. It just seemed worryingly low but I guess I haven't even looked at what drugs they could try yet. I had an emergency c section three years ago so they have said it could also be scar tissue. I guess I need to adjust my thinking a bit and realise this was never going to be an easy process. I just didn't prepare myself for thin linings! Everything else but not that!

Banana is the expert on linings

If yours continues to be think they they may do a cycle and freeze. Then d a fef a month or so later so will be able to build up your lining hopefully with progynova

Hi Katy

Have you had a saline ultrasound to look for adhesions? That will help to show up any indication of any possible scarring following your section, that might warrant a hysteroscopy to diagnose and treat any adhesions?

Brilliant - sounds like they're being super thorough which is terrific

You definitely don't want to transfer into a suboptimal uterine environment

They can freeze any embryos and get the soil right for a transfer in a FET

Saline ultrasound is super easy! Very straightforward. Will enable the Dr to visualise the uterine cavity much more clearly

Worth asking about checking the uterine blood flow with doppler ultrasound

Will check to see if the lining could be thin due to compromised blood flow. It can also help to identify any adhesions as the colour doppler will show if there's any blockages in the blood flow
