Donor Eggs?

After two miscarriages in six months (likely to be due egg quality - I am 44) DP and I are considering using an egg donor but don't have a clue where to start.

I don't know how I feel about it, though I am desperate to become a mum. Does anyone have any experience of this? Where do I start? Any advice?

We are starting donor egg treatment this year, are you self funding? We are lucky we have 2 NHS goes left, we had to apply for donor treatment though x

Although in the end we had success naturally. I had been advised to use donor eggs. The lister in London actually advised me to go to Spain. I think she said ivi ? I read up on it and emailed them, cheaper and quicker than uk and I liked the idea of resting in the sun after transfer- good luck

Hi greenlizard,

I need donor eggs and sperm and the waiting list near me is in excess of 2years. Having tried unsuccessfully for almost 2 decades using my own eggs, all being well I am getting confirmation in48hours that I will be heading off to the IVI clinic in Alicante in 72hours.

This cycle has cost me £8k excluding drugs.

I received egg donation from a relative (who's likely robe on MN too)

Pm me if you like with some question you might have.

There is known donors (shorter waiting list as you'll take the person with you, someone like a younger sister, cousin, or friend) and then there is unknown donors. As above, the unknown donor waiting list can be long.

It's a tough decision to make but if you want to be a parent, this option is a good option. Your other option is adoption.

My dd is amazing and I couldn't imagine life without her. The donor egg part is such a small part of the journey now (looking back, obviously at the time, it was a huge part!)

Please don't interpret my "egg donation is good option" as adoption being a bad one. Just a poor choice of words. Excuse typos too, multitasking with iPAd and toddler Smile

Nice to hear a positive story thankyou, we couldn't find a known donor so went unknown, there's no wait at our clinic though as there's more donors than recipients x

That's good Lauren.

Have you had any counselling with the treatment yet? It was compulsory for us to attend, along with relative etc to discuss donation, ethics, what we'd tell child etc. It was useful and got a few things off our chests that were niggling us.

Big roller coaster (IVF in general) but it was hard knowing the donor and what she was going through. There was nothing I could do to help her. And I couldn't thank her enough either. She felt an enormous amount of pressure too, whereas a known donor you can cut some of the emotion out; she's there because she wants to do a good thing.

Where's your treatment?

We went to a group seminar last year about donor treatment as we knew it might be a possibility, we did try twice with own eggs first but no luck, so we are moving onto donor hopefully in the next couple of months

Our clinic insist we have counselling first too, which we are more than happy to x

We had an anonymous donor in Spain, successful on the first go and have ds sleeping at my side as I type. Only thing for me was that we didn't get any type of counselling so I just have to get on with it. Pm me if you need any more info.

I've just got my bfp following donor egg treatment!!! Had 2 unsuccessful rounds of own egg IVF. I couldn't be happier right now!! An amazing stranger gave me a wonderful gift, and now it's all mine!!! I had major reservations about using donor eggs but it feels so right! Yes of course, I would have loved my own biological child but that wasn't going to happen. This is the next best things! We were told it would be a 2 year wait but we got the letter after about 7 months in the end. More tha willing to help answer any questions if I can xxx

We did DE cycle in UK with Care in Nov/Dec 13. Successful but had an early miscarriage. While I thought it had worked, the DE part really didn't play any part in my thinking as I was just delighted to be pregnant. I have DD already, naturally conceived, so understand that those with no biological child might have a different perspective. We're going for cycle 2 next month. Good luck with your journey.

Watching this thread and hope it will keep going, I'm going to be having donor egg treatment this year, finding is in place and will shortly start the matching process. It would be nice to keep in touch with those going through the same thing.

From the CCG? Well my GP then had to refer me to care and I was told by the CCG that care then send a 'price list' to agree and when the CCG agree the cost its finalised, however that bit seemed to get missed out as there was no delay whilst that happened, my GP referred me, Care then gave me courtesy call to say they revived everything, then they sent me a pack with loads of questions like a welcome pack, we sent that back and then they wrote about a week later with an apt for 21st March, pretty quick hey :)

I just need my care apt now and as I've had a round already with them they have all my info.. hopefully will get an apt soon. We may end up going through this at very similar times!

I had registered with them but not been although we filled same paperwork in before but still had to redo all forms, its days there's a 3 month period to prep for DE for counselling etc so I imagine June? I know that would be great! X

From evading some of the above it sounds like some of you have had funding for donor IVF? Is this nhs funding? X

Hello

My clinic in Manchester does ivf for DE with a known donor which I couldn't find, so we had to apply to go to a clinic that did anonymous donor treatment, we had tried at first with my eggs, every clinic is different although donors through NHS are pretty rare I think so your better if you know someone x

The rules are normally the same as 'normal' ivf - ie one free round if no other children (some NHS areas do 2 rounds).

So, we had one round with a donor and it worked first time.

I'm so annoyed. We got no help with regular IVF (2 rounds self funded) so we moved to donor - no one even mentioned that this may be available on the nhs!??? I'll be talking to the clinic today...

I think it very much depends on your pct and if they fund regular ivf. Mine does. My first round was a utter disaster so we applied to swap the funding to donor. My pct does this on a case by case system and my background and prior treatment was taken into account. If I'd ever self funded it wouldn't have been granted. But each pct differs so it's worth exploring.
