Oklahoma banning Shariah law

www.foxnews.com/politics/2010/06/15/oklahoma-lawmakers-seek-voter-backing-ban-shariah-courts/

Anyone who thinks we have stupid politics in this country should take a look at the US.

Oklahoma has a tiny handful (about 0.1% of the population) of Muslims with no influence, and yet they're spending $$$ on a bill to ban shariah law.

'Duncan said Sharia law is entrenched in the United Kingdom.

?It is a cancer upon the survivability of the UK,? Duncan said. ?SQ 755 will constitute a pre-emptive strike against Sharia law coming to Oklahoma.?'

A quick look at the comments there shows there's a lot of nutters who sympathise.

'I think this is a great idea, preemptive strike against a n ever growing problem. NIP IT IN THE BUD!I hopeWI. follows your lead.'

Wisconsin doesn't have many Muslims either.

More comments:

"YES! YES! YES! - Only God's law and US laws are to be abided by in the United States of America."

(Shariah law is 'God's law', at least in the eyes of Muslims. The US Constitution actually provides for separation of law and religion.)

"Thank God for Oklahoma, which is taking a stand against Maobama's policy of trying to impose islamic law on the United States. Impeach the monster now!"

"Freaking Islam is encroaching like crazy. We need another religious war to knock their butts back to the stone age. Another Inquisition would do just fine."

This is such a weird thing to start a thread on. Why are you quoting large chunks of this weird bloke that no one is going to take seriously?

SomeGuy · 17/06/2010 02:29

what do you mean no one will take him seriously? The Oklahoma Senate has approved the measure to go on the ballot in November, when it will undoubtedly become law, and there's pretty much unanimous approval in the comments too, many of which seem to believe that the UK is somehow subject to Shariah law.

OP posts:
backtotalkaboutthis · 17/06/2010 02:44

interested in injustices in other countries? and this is the focus of your attention?

what's your point?

PositiveAttitude · 17/06/2010 06:44

Do you agree with shariah law, then Someguy?

SomeGuy · 17/06/2010 08:01

My point is that Oklahoma no more needs a law against sharia law than it needs one against Viking law, it's just a focus for ignorance.

Just to take it away a little from the 'aren't Americans funny?' theme..... which Sharia Law are they planning to ban exactly? There are many different versions & interpretations depending on which islamic country, tradition or culture you happen to belong to. If islamic scholars can't agree between themselves what 'Sharia Law' actually is the idea of banning it is rather redundant.

ilovemydogandMrObama · 17/06/2010 09:24

The source is Fox News. Ignore.

SomeGuy · 17/06/2010 11:12

Well obviously it's redundant, they are only doing this because they are ignorant loons.

OP posts:
backtotalkaboutthis · 17/06/2010 12:03

I think your point may be, if you dislike sharia law you are like this stupid guy.

It's just low life stuff. Who's side are you on? The right wing ranter or the hand amputating sharia? Most people aren't on either side of course. This sort of discourse is so pointless.

SomeGuy · 17/06/2010 22:17

no that's not my point. Shariah law has zero relevance to Oklahoma, nobody is chopping off hands there, nor are they likely to, given that there are virtually no Muslims there at all. Since it's a non-issue, this is simply a way of exploiting and fermenting people's hatred of Muslims.

You do not have to be support shariah law to see that banning something that has no force or relevance in your state is a stupid gesture.

OP posts:
backtotalkaboutthis · 18/06/2010 04:47

if that's your point so what?

i mean for pete's sake

there is some real shite going down in the world -- I cannot for the life of me would make anyone take more of a passing "how ridiculous" interest in this

i think you have an anti-american prejudice

bebemoohatessnot · 18/06/2010 08:09

I do not know what Shariah Law is (yet), but you must be equally ignorant about how items are passed into law in the USA. These things are voted on and usually on a number of levels. It will depend on the specific requirements on that particular issue. (For instance whether they need 51% backing or 75% backing)

As for your comment on the 'pretty much unanimous approval' in the comments...Well they do tend 'find' supporting evidence they want and not show the whole picture on many US news programs, especially on FOX (as someone else has pointed out). And in defence of that practice (a practice I do not agree with) -which paper in the UK writes less biased info the Daily Mail or the Guardian? Media skews information all the time making it hard for anyone to truly have the right of it.

And, while many people think that Americans are all ignorant, there are a few who consider issues before they vote on them. Don't condemn them. Just as all Muslims are not the same, all Americans are not the same.
If you want to help sway Americans minds then get out there and make yourself heard (facebook and twitter are easy ways to affect the grass roots). Give them the information they need to make informed decisions. No one can make a good decision without the proper information.

umayma · 18/06/2010 09:50

Whats going on in this thread?

SomeGuy is right it is a pointless bill and scaremongering to wind people up.

you can tell that from the comments,

If you don't want to read the thread, don't read it, don't come on threads and say what's the point in this thread? people can post whatever they find interesting.

Stretch · 18/06/2010 10:19

I agree with someguy. It's fuelling hate.

Why are you being so brittle backtotalkabouthis? Are we not allowed to discuss things without your approval first.

backtotalkaboutthis · 18/06/2010 14:22

People can post what they like: and i can post what I think of it: I am being as brittle as someguy is being a stirrer.

I think it's weird and up itself.

See my post above: it's lowlife. Both sides of the argument are unattractive. Shariah law or this ranting oddball?

Neither thanks. It's a case of moving swiftly on while averting the eyes.

Stretch · 18/06/2010 14:37

What are you on about??

As far as I'm aware, he, and other people on this thread, are DISCUSSING the proposed ban. Why is that "up itself"?

As an aside...
Did you just call Someguy a ranting oddball!

NanKid · 18/06/2010 14:42

PMSL at 'Maobama'

What is going in the heads of these right wing nutjobbers?

I say let's get all the bible belt fruitcakes together with the fundamentalist Muslim cranks, ship 'em out to one of those isolated 'Tristan de cuna' type islands and let them all get on with it.

That's law I'd support passing...

backtotalkaboutthis · 18/06/2010 14:48

because it's totally reductive

no, the oklahoma guy is a ranting oddball of course

the point is to try to make people feel as though they are on his side if they don't like shariah law

that is the point of this thread

this is a minor piece of rubbish

course he can start a thread on it, of course I can post on it about how it's totally up itself

backtotalkaboutthis · 18/06/2010 14:51

go ahead ..i think it's ridiculous getting worked up over it in the way someguy is

so you know, enjoy

it's been a waste of my time as much as his and yours

have fun

SomeGuy · 18/06/2010 14:57

hmm, only one person getting worked up here methinks

OP posts:
backtotalkaboutthis · 18/06/2010 14:58

"methinks"?

what are you like

expatinscotland · 18/06/2010 15:00

So don't go and live there.

BFD.

Plenty of 'nutters' here who feel the same.

orangina · 18/06/2010 15:03

I'm with Someguy. It's not as if Oklahoma is awash w prosetilizing (sp!!!!!) islamic fundamentalists is it?

Bonkers. The law makers of Oklahome, not someguy.....

orangina · 18/06/2010 15:04

(god, sorry, spelling and typos..... )
