well we can't get any train tickets either - we have been in the station here for hours and it seems that everything is booked. We are going to go to Geneva tomorrow anyway.

It is getting depressing - we have a ticket from Brussels on Thursday, but it looks as though we won't be able to get there.

A question: do you think we would be able to hire a car without a driving license? if so, is it possible to hire cars at one place and drop them somewhere else.

And a further question - are there any cars to be had in Geneva?

(the other option is to pitch up at the airport tomorrow and try to get on a flight...)

sophiaverloren · 19/04/2010 17:41

Maria2007, my boss has really struggled to get a train out of Rome - now booked on SATURDAY. However, I've just seen and sent Embassy info from Themoreitsnows, but thought I'd better mention that train to Brussels from Rome not an easy option

MmeLindt · 19/04/2010 17:42

Pollyanna
It is possible to hire a car here and drive it to Brussels but they charge extra for that and I have heard of horrendous prices being charged. I suspect that you will need your driving license. Have you got someone at home who could scan and email a copy at least? They might accept that.

Did you see that UK airspace is opening tomorrow? No news on CH airspace yet.

sophiaverloren · 19/04/2010 17:45

Franca sorry one last silly question: do you think I need to turn up stupidly early at the station tomorrow? I have a "self service" ticket which I presume I'll get from machine (??). Train at 0640.

MmeLindt · 19/04/2010 17:47

Pollyanna
According to the website, Europcar have cars available - I put in tomorrow's date and got a price of about CHF 600 for a days hire of Golf.

NorkilyChallenged · 19/04/2010 17:58

Pollyanna - sorry I can't remember, whereabouts are you?

DP heading for Basel tonight but unsure where to head for after that.

Sounds like a nightmare still

CheeeseOnToast · 19/04/2010 17:59

Thanks MmeLindt I'll have a look at those sites

Rosa · 19/04/2010 18:13

exotic traveller CAT me if you have the facility . I see though that the EMbassy is running coaches which is another good alternative .
SKY news is not really reporting things well they say that UK airports should open but they are not going into detail about other European destinations. As far as I know Northern Italy airports closed until 8am next update this evening. Airspace opened for about and hour this morning befre shutting down again.

RedLentil · 19/04/2010 18:15

Irish airspace looks set to open up tomorrow too. Dublin and Cork airports are not far from their respective docks (Holyhead-Dublin) (Swansea-Cork)so that might open up options for anyone who is heading back.

If I can be of any help with that let me know. Good luck.

Rosa · 19/04/2010 18:16

NO you will not machines are all over the station but I would get there in advance to be on the safe side. They are in English ....

Mrmyboots

What lovely lovely news, congrats to you all, and welcome to the world Babymyboots! What a story you will have to tell.

How great that you're all safe and back together.

Reading the bit about calling him John just made me cry.

Wonderful wonderful news.

wrinklyraisin · 19/04/2010 18:29

Oh Mr Boots that is WONDERFUL and has made my day hearing something so heartwarming! Hope Mrs Boots and Baby John are home soon

orienteerer · 19/04/2010 18:31

I've just spoken to the embassy in Rome, there is a coach 9am Tue and possibly one later in the day. After that it will purely be if there is sufficient demand (they are only coordinating on behalf of a local coach firm, not funding the exercise iyswim), a difficult call to make if you are just deciding to route via Rome. She gave me a different phone number for tomorrow (0039) 06 42 20 24 20.

Pollyanna · 19/04/2010 18:32

Congratulations mybootsaremuddy!

We have (possibly) managed to book train tickets - I used www.tgv-europe.ch (swiss site) and managed to get tickets from geneva to paris and then to Brussels. We are spending 2 nights in Paris.

I can't believe we managed it though when it was impossible at the station so I'll believe it when I see it.

it is costing a fortune!
Mme Lindt - do you know where the Rail Europe Boutique is in Geneva - Rue de Lausanne 11 - how far away from the station is it? we have to pick up tickets there.

RedLentil · 19/04/2010 18:33

That is just lovely news!

Blu · 19/04/2010 18:34

Wow- what a pair of Muddy Boots! What a story!
Congratulations all round - welcome little muddy wellie, and 3 cheers for the Magic Handbag!

MrsSchadenfreude · 19/04/2010 18:39

Mr Boots, will the baby be called Asher? Or Ashley?

MmeLindt · 19/04/2010 18:39

Congratulation to the whole Boots family. What wonderful news. So glad that your DC got home in time, thanks to Granny GG and Grandpa John.

Jacaqueen · 19/04/2010 18:40

What lovely news!

I'm welling up here.

Congratulations to the Boot family

orienteerer · 19/04/2010 18:41

Why not just plain Ash

MmeLindt · 19/04/2010 18:42

Just around the corner, Pollyanna. When you come out of the station, turn to your left along the street where the tram goes. Are you in Geneva now then?

orienteerer · 19/04/2010 18:43

Ash would be better than Eyjafjallajoekull
