Have just heard an unconfirmed report on the radio. Anyone else?

Blu, this thread is making me depressed too. It's making me cry in fact. It's so sad.

Toothache · 22/07/2005 11:47

Dino - I thought about this when I was on the Tube on Monday. I have black hair and dark features, I'm in my 20's and I was carrying a rather large laptop case. I thought "I wonder if people are looking at me suspiciously?". Not nice.

About 3% (1,800,000) of the current population of are asian. a handful of them commit attacks on Great Britain, and some people see that as jsutification to avoid them all?
On the basis of the actions of a few people people are makign generalisations to all 1,800,000 of them (and that's if you only avoid asians) - that is racism, pure and simple.

Exactly, batters!

MrsDoolittle · 22/07/2005 11:48

Oh well aloha - each to their own

Honestly, I don't think anybody should be too offended by the reaction of the British public at the moment. Over 50 people died in the most horrific cirsumstances and you can't blame people for wanting to protect themselves from that.

The important issue really is this need for 'self-preservation' is only mildly manifesting itself at the moment. Should the situation get worse, then we really have a problem on our hands. There will be no stopping the BNP.

By the way, I'm a red head (not strawberry blond) and if I didn't believe Catherine Tate to be a red-head I would have been offended!!
As it happened, I laughed.

aloha · 22/07/2005 11:48

If you believe in God you believe he loves everyone anyway - terrorist, murderer, rapist the lot. Doesn't mean you want to invite a rapist into your house though!
Look, I'm not racist (IMO), this isn't about this, nor about your husbands, friends, kids. I won't be offended if you get jumpy if my rather large white husband is walking down a dark street behind you, and I won't be offended if you refuse to get into a railway carriage with him either.

WideWebWitch · 22/07/2005 11:49

I agree Kelly.

ninah · 22/07/2005 11:49

me too well said kelly

QueenOfQuotes · 22/07/2005 11:50

well in that case Springchicken - remind me never to visit Luton with my family

Springchicken · 22/07/2005 11:50

Well if you are offended then you are offended there is nothing i can do about that.
I live in a very well known town that has alot of asian people, alot of white peole and alot of black people. I am not racist.

Mine and my family's safety comes first IMHO and i would rather take me and mine out of those situations

No, but it doesn't mean I'm going to walk around believing everyone around me is a rapist or murderer, either.

Caligula · 22/07/2005 11:50

So Kelly d'you think all women who don't get into a carriage with a lone male at night are sexist then?

WideWebWitch · 22/07/2005 11:50

But aloha, don't you see that if everyone does tihs it is awful adn tragic and NOT FAIR on Asian/black/muslims, the majority of whom are law abiding and not suicide bombing loons.

Tinker · 22/07/2005 11:50

Exactly batters. This is the point of terrorism.

ScummyMummy · 22/07/2005 11:50

I've become a rucksackphobe but am coping by using the the big grin test- look at rucksack, locate owner, grin at owner, if grin back is received relax, if not then panic. It's working so far.

Caligula · 22/07/2005 11:51

Sounds like a good test Scummy!

Kelly1978 · 22/07/2005 11:52

lol @ scummymummy, sounds pretty good!

dillydally · 22/07/2005 11:52

Not sure it is racism in its roots, but fear which causes people to act in a variety of different ways

aloha · 22/07/2005 11:52

Look, I'm not planning on stabbing anyone, abusing them or even giving them funny looks. I am not making any assumptions about black or asian people per se.
I am not going to go on public transport but that' s not because I am racist but because I don't want to be blown up.
But if it offends people then I am truly sorry.

Springchicken · 22/07/2005 11:52

My fiance is a large bloke with a skin head and tatoo's all over him. If people avoid him or make assumptions about him ad his intentions does that make them racist? No, it makes them cautious.
