Have just heard an unconfirmed report on the radio. Anyone else?

OP posts:

it is NOT purely based on the colour of their skin!! aaargh.

MarsLady · 22/07/2005 18:32

I have to say that I will not change my way of life because of these bombings etc.

I will continue to travel by tube across London to see family and friends. I will continue to go to the theatre in the centre of town. I will continue with my plan to send DD1 to school in Victoria.

Aloha, I understand your fear and I hope that you will be able to get over it. To the other posters who say that they would not travel into London, I hope that you also get over your fear and begin to visit us again.

As a young black woman with black brothers, uncles, cousins etc I can only hope that your fears don't cause them either offence or insecurity. I would imagine that there are lots of nervous looking asian/black men travelling now and that their nerves come from the thoughts that they know many of us are having.

I pray that these atrocities stop. We made it through the days of the IRA and I'm sure that we will make it through these dark days as well.

So, if you decide to desert us here in London for a while, don't be gone too long. Know though that we will continue to live and love in our gorgeous city and we'll miss you.

Fio2 · 22/07/2005 18:33

I said you were prejudiced not racist

Ladymuck · 22/07/2005 18:33

Fio, if that is your definition of racial discrimination, then I'm not sure that you've ever suffered from it tbh. Sorry.

aloha · 22/07/2005 18:34

i am not prejudiced. I am utterly pissed of with the levels of casual abuse thrown at me here.

chicagomum · 22/07/2005 18:35

what abuse aloha?

aloha · 22/07/2005 18:36

i think racist is pretty abusive tbh.

Fio2 · 22/07/2005 18:38

you are right ladymuck, i am lucky

happymerryberries · 22/07/2005 18:39

Aloha, fwiw, I get what you are saying. You will feel nervous at sitting next to someone who matches the description of a suspected terrorist. End of story as far as I can see.

If a suspected terrorist was described as having vivid red hair, freckles and carrying a big ruck sack and someone looking like that sat next to me I'd be lying if I said it wouldn't make me edgy. Admitting that doesn't make me racist or predjudiced, or you either

chicagomum · 22/07/2005 18:39

i must have missed it but who/when were you called racist?

aloha · 22/07/2005 18:42

well, exactly hmb.
sigh.

Kelly1978 · 22/07/2005 18:46

If I was sitting next to someone that looked like one of the pictures of the suspects you wouldn't see me for the dust. But why all young asian men? And why not all young black men too?

CountessDracula · 22/07/2005 18:47

Well the rucksack on the bus was a Fitness First one - I am a member of that gym and have one, I wonder if people will run away from me on the tube?

aloha · 22/07/2005 18:47

did i say all? no.

CountessDracula · 22/07/2005 18:48

would you avoid me then aloha? I could have been indoctrinated at the gym.

aloha · 22/07/2005 18:49

sigh

CountessDracula · 22/07/2005 18:49

quite

chicagomum · 22/07/2005 18:49

i think this is just going round in circles now - fwiw aloha i don't think your racist or predjudice - your afraid like all of us, and handling it in the way that makes you feel best - now some of us agree with it and some don't

anchovies · 22/07/2005 18:50

The police have released pictures of the four men from yesterdays attempted bombings and I certainly wouldn't be able to avoid anyone who looked like any of them.

here

Kelly1978 · 22/07/2005 18:50

ok, young asian men with rucksacks -

'if I was on a bus and a young Asian guy got on with a rucksack, I would get off.'

snafu · 22/07/2005 18:50

Is all this really necessary?

snafu · 22/07/2005 18:51

Kelly, what response are you after?

CountessDracula · 22/07/2005 18:52

Warren St one looks like Patrick Vieira - no wonder he is legging it to Juve

Jimjams · 22/07/2005 18:53

I think there are 2 things going on here and wires being crossed all over the place,

  1. Aloha is scared of young men with rucksacks (a couple of yesterdays bunch looked quite possibly caucasian to me) - they make her uneasy.

  2. That sort of fear is being confused with situations like that just described on our local news where a young muslim girl who ha lived in this city all her life was looking out of her own front window and was asked by a passer by "sure you haven't got a bomb in there?"

I think there are big differences between those 2 situations. One is racist- a young girl who is quite clearly not a threat is targeted because of her race- and in the other a specific situation has led to nervousness.

CountessDracula · 22/07/2005 18:54

I bet a lot of young asian men would get off a bus if another young asian man got on with a rucksack tbh.

Maybe rucksacks should be banned, or only transparent ones allowed on public transport.
