I'm with you on the new legislation the sooner the better!!!!!!!

Caligula · 22/07/2005 14:03

Actually, thinking about it, I am suspicious of white men with bags as well. Not wildly, and actively, but passively - I always mentally clock that they have actually taken their bags away with them. And women for that matter. I've always been really security conscious on the train and bus.

I just think some people are more affected by this sort of thing and are more attuned to it and more cautious. And that doesn't make them racists.

Ladymuck · 22/07/2005 14:03

Sophable - I agree that being killed with a bomb isn't the most likely way to die - but right now in London a bomb on the underground appears to be a more likely threat than it has been for quite some time.

And for the other risks - I watch out for traffic, before and as I cross a road, preferably using zebra corssings etc rather than wandering out blindly. I will not be a passenger of someone who has been drinking alcohol. I always wear a seatbelt, and generally I do not open doors to strange looking men.

Heathcliffscathy · 22/07/2005 14:07

QoQ, has your PC been taken over by someone with tourettes? this isn't your style usually, what's going on?????

Caligula · 22/07/2005 14:07

Can I refer you to the Mumsnet philosophy QoQ. You're usually more articulate than that.

snafu · 22/07/2005 14:07

Oh, give it a rest, QoQ. Not big and not clever.

Sophable, I honestly don't see any scaremongering on this thread. I really don't.

dillydally · 22/07/2005 14:08

I object to being called stupid

Windermere · 22/07/2005 14:08

Oh well, at least she had the decency to put an * in!

jessicaandbumpsmummy · 22/07/2005 14:09

QueenOfQuotes · 22/07/2005 14:10

Eugenious · 22/07/2005 14:10

an object lesson in how to win friends and influence people [rolls eyes]

SaintGeorge · 22/07/2005 14:10

Enough QoQ.

I have resisted posting on this thread all day, til now it has maintained a certain dignity.

snafu · 22/07/2005 14:11

QoQ, if you want to make a point regarding this discussion, make it.

Blu · 22/07/2005 14:11

I am finding London scary at the moment, I was 50m away from one of the bombs yesterday, Stockwell is the next stop along the line from my home, and my sister was outside the station when the shooting happened. Of course, these are not happy events, and they don't make us feel safe, but I still don't see the point of stigmatising any one particular group as a result of what they look like they MIGHT be in terms of religion, because the odds are so much against them being guilty, and because I am certain that such suspicion is likely to have a backlash of it's own, that simply gives momentum to a very viscious circle.

Heathcliffscathy · 22/07/2005 14:11

QoQ, seriously, what is wrong with you? is there some massive thing that i've missed that is making you completely irrational today or what?

HappyHuggy · 22/07/2005 14:12

QoQ - your obviosly upset hun, take some time out and do something nice for you

((((((((hugs))))))))

Heathcliffscathy · 22/07/2005 14:12

that's the other thing, i'm not even sure who and what is making you so out of proportionally angry?

Blu · 22/07/2005 14:13

Erm, feeling that her DH is staigmatised and peopple working overtime to justify it MIGHT have something to do with it....

edam · 22/07/2005 14:13

Until this thread I hadn't really thought in any depth about how I'll react to young Asian men with rucksacks when I next get on the tube (haven't had to use it since 7th July but working in central London most of August - using a tube line that has already been targetted three times). But I probably will be nervous, because that's the description of the bombers. It must be unpleasant for the thousands of other people who share that description but I can't help that, I'm sorry. If the bombers were white 30-something women with brown hair and glasses people would probably be nervous of me.
Like the idea of the grin test ... until July you'd have been looked at very oddly if you grinned at a stranger on the tube.
