Squeaver - That thread was up for a number of weeks, I think it had sticky status and I think it had the added incentive of winning something or other from O2 (but I might be misremembering). In those circumstances a sample of 5,000 is pfffft.

squeaver · 17/11/2009 22:23

I know, I agree, more people could and should have taken part.

But it is statistically robust - is that what's bothering you?

Why should I have taken part?

squeaver · 17/11/2009 22:31

bibbity - if you're asking me, I didn't mean "should have" as in "bloody well should have, who do they think they are?".

I meant "based on the amount of time it was on the site, with an incentive to take part, the relatively low response rate is a little surprising"

BIWI, you can find out most things you want to know about national stats on UK women's lives here It's a bit out of date but you can find more current data here

BecauseImWorthIt · 18/11/2009 08:51

I meant that it would have been useful to put that information on the poll on the site (although thanks, Wilf, that's interesting info!).

If, as a researcher, you're presenting data like this you very rarely present it absolutely but usually show it relative to some kind of norma/average. In that way you can show which differences are statistically significant.

And most researchers would kill for a sample size of around 5000! To reach that number of people via traditional quantitative research methods is hugely expensive..

But I think the fact that there is a perception that 5000 MNetters is a low number reflects the fact that, in reality, I would guess that although MN gets a huge number of hits each day/week/month, and has a huge number of people registered, there is actually only a hardcore of nutters regular posters.

And the thread probably wasn't up for long enough and didn't stand out from the other threads enough for less regular users to notice it. (And frankly, given how many people also confess to lurking, I would also imagine that very many people simply couldn't be bothered to fill it in or, worse, were suspicious as to MN's motives in looking for this information).

Jajas - I believe it was up to around the 175,000 mark back in the summer.

BUT according to all the flurry of publicity surrounding David Cameron's webchat, its somewhere between 800,000 and 850,000 - go figure!

MissingMyWheels · 19/11/2009 11:35

Talking of the Times, has anyone seen this yet today?

timesonline.typepad.com/alphamummy/2009/11/live-chat-david-cameron-on-mumsnet-analy sis.html

So they're doing a webchat on the MN webchat with David Cameron?

Maybe we should do a webchat about their webchat about our webchat?!

Sheesh...

MissingMyWheels · 19/11/2009 11:36

Bah - poor linking. Get it sis.html here

MissingMyWheels · 19/11/2009 11:37
