Good on him, but, surely they should wait a bit to see if anything actually comes of this? He's only been in office 9 months.

Thought for awhile he was raised by his mother only, and think it's the reference he makes to her being a single mom that infers being poor?

This was the school he went to in Indonesia:

"The school was founded in 1934 as Carpentier Alting Stichting Nassau School (CAS) by the Dutch colonial administration and was reserved for the children of the Dutch and Indonesian nobility. The Indonesian government took over administration of the school in 1962, and it was then run by the Raden Saleh Foundation.

Among its students have been children of Bambang Trihatmodjo, the son of former president Soeharto, as well as the grandchildren of former vice presidents Hamzah Haz and Try Sutrisno. "

directly followed by the prep school dittany links to (with his grandparents), then Columbia and Harvard.

"Tuition is $16,675 for the 2008-2009 school year, not including optional and mandatory fees. Tuition charges do not cover the entire cost of the education of a student, and this "deficit" is met by the school's endowment. The Washington Post recently estimated Punahou's endowment to be $174M;"

Not exactly the Chicago ghetto was it.

The school he went to in Hawai'i was the equivalent of one of our top public schools. I have a friend who went there and have heard a LOT about it. Drink, drugs and shagging featured heavily .

Can I just express

at "Marxist Socialist"?

gettingagrip · 10/10/2009 10:35

This is quite interesting re Obama.

There are a few sites about Michelle also in this regard.

MmeGoblindt · 10/10/2009 10:51

Ok, obviously the honeymoon is over for Barack. Shame, this was obviously not what the Nobel Committee were hoping to do.

I am reading Obama's autobiography at the moment and have so far found no indications of Marxism (aside from a story about a meeting where two Marxist disturbed the meeting with their harranging).

I would say that he did not come from a very priviliged background. From reading his book, his mother was not a anthropologist while he was growing up, she went back to college when he was about 12yo (when he went to live wiht his grandparents). His grandfather was a salesman, later insurance salesman and not a particularly sucessful one at that. His grandmother was vice president of a local bank, but never got promoted about that rank because of her sex.

His father is not so clear what he actually did. I will have to go back and reread.

From this I mean that his family were obviously not poor. But he did have to work hard. He went to Indonesian school but his mother made him get up at 4am to do the US coursework so that when he moved back to Hawaii he could go straight to school.

MmeGoblindt · 10/10/2009 10:53

And I think that you have to have a tendency towards egoism/narcissm to actually want to be President of USA.

AitchTwoToTangOh · 10/10/2009 11:37

of course he's a narcissist, they all are. it's completely irrelevant, other than in the respect that it means that he thinks he knows best for the country he's governing. so did bush, fgs.

poor obama, i just think that this points up all those questions as to what he's actually done yet. it's created a pr problem for him that could not have been forseen.

but tbh spokette i'm a bit offended that you think anyone raising an eyebrow at his getting the nobel prize for two weeks' work (nominations closed a fortnight after inauguration i believe) must be doing so because of the colour of his skin and the fact that they don't believe a black man should be in the white house. actually i'm really offended.

My immediate thought on reading the thread titles was "Why? WTF has he done?"

"Drink, drugs and shagging featured heavily "

well at least for obama and his cocaine experiences it did.

KayHarkerIsKayHarker · 10/10/2009 18:29

pmsl @ 'Obama the marxist' It's like 'Obama the monster-under-the-bed'. Silly. He's certainly on the left of centre, but that hardly makes him communist-comrade-numero-uno. I don't agree with him on one issue, most other things I'm quietly impressed by. Still don't get the nobel thing though.

Monkeytrousers · 12/10/2009 12:29

Its a joke.

It should be called the OPEC peace prize
