Good on him, but, surely they should wait a bit to see if anything actually comes of this? He's only been in office 9 months.

Well, not sure about the socialism comment...

But absolutely agree that it's a bit premature, unless they are awarding it as he's going down the diplomatic route rather than war mongering??

mayorquimby · 09/10/2009 14:16

i demand a nobel peace prize. i'm at least as much "not bush" as him if not more so.

that's what he won it for right?

Hassled · 09/10/2009 14:17

I take everyone's point, and I am a bit gobsmacked, but I have to say I'm struggling to think of a more likely/worthy recipient - who should have got it?

FiveGoMadonTheDanceFloor · 09/10/2009 14:21

What for?

Saying that you are going to do something and actually doing it is not the same thing, give it to him when he has achieved nuclear disarmament and peace in the middle east.

On the other hand DH has just said well they had to give him something as he didn't get the Olympics.

ilovemydogandmrobama · 09/10/2009 14:22

You shouldn't get the Nobel Peace Prize for being cool.

mayorquimby · 09/10/2009 14:24

well despite what was said above i do think Morgan Tsavangarai should have gotten it. i certainly think he's done more than obama at least.

sassy38 · 09/10/2009 14:26

Can l have a nobel peace prize for stopping fights between my daughter and her friends, actually all mothers deserve it.

Bleh · 09/10/2009 14:34

Agree with the Morgan Tsvangirai suggestion.

I still think I should get one. Come on, hand it over, especially with all the cash. I'm skint at the moment. ** Disclaimer, this is not to be read as an appeal for kind MNers to set up a "save the Bleh" fund and send over their DCs' toys/DCs/Grandfathers/Chocolate. But if you want, send cash. Thanks.

Why was the 1 o'clock news late this afternoon? Was it just because of the Americans. Did not help that I just caught a bit of the news....Obama is Noble Peaze prize winner and by the way the Americans have attacked the MOON!
I thought I was in some kind of time slipage for a moment

alwayslookingforanswers · 09/10/2009 14:44

sorry - but while he's a lot better the Mugabe, Morgan isn't all sweetness and light either.

Bleh · 09/10/2009 14:45

Is it because they think that's where Bin Laden is? (would have been funnier if Bush was still in power).

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 09/10/2009 14:47

What Prunerz said.

MrsGhoulofGhostbourne · 09/10/2009 14:52

Whaaaaaat? As Uriel said - for achieving what exactly? For being handsome and being the first black American president?
Well, bang goes any reamining credibility the Nobel brand might have had.

Bleh · 09/10/2009 14:52

TBH, the Nobel prize is turning into a bit of a joke. Al Gore - for making a movie and flying around giving lectures, while looking serious. Desmond Tutu, yes, Nelson Mandela and De Klerk, yes, Obama and Al Gore? No.

OP posts:
MmeGoblindt · 09/10/2009 14:53

lol at Bleh's angling for spare Grandads.

I am pretty sure that there are many many people more deserving of the Nobel Peace Prize.

Heathcliffscathy · 09/10/2009 14:53

'to the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between the nations and the abolition or reduction of standing armies and the formation and spreading of peace congresses'

so this prize goes to the american people for electing an african american (this massively increases fraternity among nations, the whole developing world feels represented at the highest level by dint of obama's ethnic, mixed heritage).

and it goes to obama for being the first us president (since carter?) to look at arms proliferation in a critical way.

hurrah.

Bleh · 09/10/2009 14:57

I mean, compare him to previous winners. "Mikhail Gorbachev, for bringing the Cold War to an end, Mother Theresa.

Thanks MmeLindt. Don't happen to have any spares lying around?

pmsl @ 'the Americans have attacked the MOON'.

Totally meh about this news. I'm sure he's going to achieve some good things in his term, but could we hold off the prizes until he's actually done them.

francaghostohollywood · 09/10/2009 15:09

Yes, what Sophable said.

KayHarkerIsKayHarker · 09/10/2009 15:17

Help me out here. It seems to amount to 'He's black, and really, really nice'.

francaghostohollywood · 09/10/2009 15:19

Do you think? No, I didn't read it like that.

KayHarkerIsKayHarker · 09/10/2009 15:20

I'm probably being dense. I just don't really get it.

MmeGoblindt · 09/10/2009 15:44

Sorry, Bleh. I can lend you my Dad if you want. He is good with babies and small children, makes great lasagne and is a dab hand with a paintbrush.

I do have to warn you about his terrible jokes.

MmeGoblindt · 09/10/2009 15:48

Ezra Klein: Obama also awarded Nobel prize in chemistry. "He's just got great chemistry," says Nobel Committee.

SomeGuy · 09/10/2009 15:50

He's the greatest American winner since Kissinger.
