Did anyone see Giles Coren in the Times about this yesterday? Link here

It's not just the fact that the professor in question is a bit old and ugly. That comes to us all in the end.

It's the fact of treating women students as fodder for his masturbatory fantasies that's repulsive.

policywonk · 27/09/2009 11:06

Apparently he was 'pullulating the transgressive discourse'. Gotta love that as an excuse.

Quattrocento · 27/09/2009 11:14

Being in possession of a large vocabulary doesn't make university professors less physically or spiritually repulsive.

Discuss

Pullulate means to spread, doesn't it? I think he's pullulating crap personally.

policywonk · 27/09/2009 11:24

Brownie point, yes. I had to look it up.

Must admit I thought that about Buckingham too...

Coren's article isn't much better, is it? Esp. in its apparent assumption that all academic staff are male (or does he really believe that women go into academia because they are furious that they didn't screw enough people the first time around?)

And as for this faux-modesty about only shagging five women at uni... yuk. Mind you, I do just generally dislike him.

Quattrocento · 27/09/2009 11:36

Yes I agree with you about Coren - bit repulsive. There are two things I liked about Coren's article though.

The first was that Coren unpicked the masturbatory fantasy bit nicely, although he didn't actually go all the way with that (s'cuse bad pun). He didn't unpick the male vanity of the professor who seriously thinks that nubile 19/20 year olds are flaunting their curves at him. The young'uns are almost certainly blissfully sexually unaware of him, aren't they?

The second thing I liked was the unintentional irony when Coren says "?Hang on, let?s be honest about this, how different is he from me??" Because he then tries to prove that he is entirely unlike the professor, but only actually proves how he is exactly like the professor.

Incoherent, sorry. The only point of interest in Coren or the Nutty Professor, is the ways in which male vanity can manifest itself.

TheFallenMadonna · 27/09/2009 11:37

Giles Coren just saw another excuse to tell us how very, very clever he is I reckon. It's astonishing how often he manages to drop his academic achievements into his column, and, more oddly, his restaurant reviews.

policywonk · 27/09/2009 11:39

Ah right, I see. I'm rubbish at lit crit

I honestly never found any of my male lecturers/profs in the slightest bit attractive when I was at Uni. I thought some of them were great teachers, but that really was the extent of it.

Blackduck · 27/09/2009 11:39

Giles Cohen, for example, is a twat.

Blackduck · 27/09/2009 11:40

Coren

policywonk · 27/09/2009 11:41

Well that's no good Blackduck. It will never show up in a Google vanity search.

policywonk · 27/09/2009 11:42

Except for vanity searches conducted by poor, blameless Giles Cohen.

Quattrocento · 27/09/2009 11:44

Just for Giles Coren's vanity search, I heartily endorse Blackduck's POV, which was that:

Giles Coren, for example, is a twat.

Blackduck · 27/09/2009 11:45

Giles Coren, for example, is a twat

Sorry Giles Cohen (whoever you are.....)

Blackduck · 27/09/2009 11:47

Actually, I am off to lunch with a bunch of academics (including dp) I could raise this topic - what do you reckon....

morningpaper · 27/09/2009 11:47

"I solved the problem in a different way, in the end, by looking up all the girls I had fancied at university and sleeping with them now, ten years later, ticking them off retrospectively"

Ooooh yeah Giles Coren, you're such a feminist.

Sorry, but I got a first AND slept with manu boys including ugly lecturers, as did several of my peers. Some people can multi-task.

morningpaper · 27/09/2009 11:47

MANY boys

not manu

didn't meet him

DuelingFanjo · 27/09/2009 11:49

"The fault lies with the females"

WTF. I absolutely hate it when people call women 'females' in this kind of context. What an arse.

"she will flaunt you her curves. Which you should admire daily to spice up your sex, nightly, with the wife"

Urrgghhhhh

VulpusinaWilfsuit · 27/09/2009 11:50

And some us saw fit to sleep with everyone BEFORE we went to university

Twat.

Blackduck:

policywonk · 27/09/2009 11:51

Heh, when you Google Giles Cohen, it simply refuses to believe that you don't mean Giles Coren.

I'm all shocked at MP shagging her lecturers. I might have to have a bit of a sit down.

Quattrocento · 27/09/2009 11:52

Do, Blackduck. I want to find out how many lecturers think that the girls are flaunting their curves at THEM and ONLY THEM. Call it unscientific research.

policywonk · 27/09/2009 11:54

I never! I made a point only to shag emotionally immature, acne-ridden egotists with PE issues. And only two of them.

Quattrocento · 27/09/2009 11:55

LOL at Policy (sorry, meant MP). I too googled Giles Cohen and was similarly shocked. However I did find a Giles Cohen. He wrote a review on Amazon which said this:

"I am Giles Cohen of Moldova. I have seen this film many times and it has become quite popular in my nation. I would like to agree with all who believe that Joe Wandell is very great in this film and shall perhaps be the next great star of Moldovan cinema!"

Which made me giggle for some Borat-related reason. He's a MUCH better writer than Giles COren, though, isn't he?
