My XP worked at a University (in his mid 20s)and apparently this sort of thing did happen. This was in the late 1990s, so not that long ago.

According to him (I strongly suspect he may have been showing off a little...) attractive female students were throwing themselves at him quite frequently! of course he manfully resisted etc.

The impression I got though, from what he said, and speaking to colleagues, was that the lecturers who particpated in such morally dubious behaviour were generally derided and disliked by other members of staff. And in one case subject to disciplinary behaviour, that I'm aware of.

Janos · 24/09/2009 19:37

I mean to say, speaking to colleagues of his..

I suppose my point is that this is not a universally held attitude. Thank god.

Thredworm · 24/09/2009 19:42

S'ok, everyone, call off the hounds. He or his PR team say in The Guardian that he was just 'finessing dissonance'. That's alright then. Tosser, tosser, and thrice tosser.

My initial reaction was 'hoho, this is quite normal, what's the fuss?' but having read the original article I am actually very shocked - it is really misogynistic and the quotes highlighted by the press are not the worst of it, IMO.

This is my favourite quote:

"As in Stringfellows, you should look but not touch. Be warned by the fates of too many of the protagonists in Middlemarch, The History Man and I Am Charlotte Simmons. And in any case, you should have learnt by now that all cats are grey in the dark."

All cats are gray in the dark - i.e. fuck your wife and think of your students! because in the dark you can't tell! hahahaha

gross innit?

morningpaper · 24/09/2009 20:08

original article here - his section on 'lust' half way down

blondeslatternwithbigtits · 24/09/2009 20:20

I have a RL meeting with this man coming up- aaaargh. What the fuck should I wear? Anyone got a spare burqa around the place?

moondog · 24/09/2009 20:23

I am sure you flatter yourself Blonde.

blondeslatternwithbigtits · 24/09/2009 20:24

I shall be sure not to sit too close or mention grey cats.

Janos · 24/09/2009 20:27

Agree SGM.

Surely it is taken as read that attractive young people are, well, attractive and sexually appealing. Of course they are, 'tis nature.

I think what's annoying is his patronising, obnoxious attitude to women.

Yuck, yuck, yuck. Sleazy creep.

Habbibu · 24/09/2009 20:32

Why, blondes? Are you a divorce lawyer, perchance?

blondeslatternwithbigtits · 24/09/2009 20:40

Chuckle. No. But I will have to Be Polite to Him.

NotanOtter · 24/09/2009 20:52

blonde
i'd withdraw my interest in the interview
dont give the man air time

I think any female student of his would be justified asking to have a different tutor or however it works.

Even if he's not fantasising about you (yuck) he's going to be marking you out of ten and writing you off as a hound.

yuck.

blondeslatternwithbigtits · 24/09/2009 21:03

Yuck yuck yuck
I can't get out of it otter.

LordPanofthePeaks · 24/09/2009 21:22

if he had said "female students are a perky lot".....would be different....blinding logic.

madlentileater · 24/09/2009 23:18

read this at lunchtime at work, was speechless, what planet is he on that he thinks this is OK?
tis true this was going on in my day (late 70s) was outrageous then cannot believe my daughters would be potentially exposed to the same crap -if they went to a private university, anyway, whatever that may be.

CatIsSleepy · 25/09/2009 08:34

he's also assuming all lecturers are male isn't he?!

are male students also a "perk" for female lecturers....?

Prunerz · 25/09/2009 09:56

All cats are grey in the dark?
Bloody hell. sisters, it's time for a bit of re-education...

hullygully · 25/09/2009 10:02

He is foul. But I sat through a post grad couple of years recently watching two women slowly undress themselves through the day and wanted to tell them to put them away..no point pretending it doesn't happen.

VulpusinaWilfsuit · 25/09/2009 10:13

But I don't think ANY relationship between ANY student and staff in a position where they can award or influence marks is acceptable, whether or not the student is mature or any age, apparently freely consenting. After the degree has finished; if the student is a postgrad and the lecturer is not involved in their postgrad study/supervision/examining in any way, I might just about tolerate it...

The point is they are NOT freely consenting when that tutor is involved in awarding them a degree. I also don't think accepting gifts from students is acceptable while the course is in progress for the same reasons.

I have seen these things happen and it leads to distress and confusion when the slightest misunderstanding occurs. And I have to say I have never, ever in my 20-odd years of teaching in a University, come across a case where a female lecturer ended up in a relationship with a male student. I'm sure it happens, but I think the typical relationship is the other way.

I agree that there ought to be a code of conduct.
