there was a story on the Daily Mail website yesterday talking about a father who threw his 4 year old daughter off a cliff to avoid paying child support.

This is truly shaking me. How sickening. Words cannot describe its horror.

This reminds me of when i was in hospital just waiting for my discharge notes & the lady next to me was waiting to go home too,well her dp was quite shitty cos she was going home & he shouted everywhere that 'no fuckin baby was going to stop him going out & getting pissed' & when the mum said they would have to feed the baby before they left he said 'fuck off i get fed first not that little bastard'.

It was horrible & made me want to go home all the more.The staff just let them go & i often wonder about that little boy.

PM, i find your story truly shocking. how was that baby allowed to go home with that man? and tbh, why didnt you call the nspcc or even your social worker. Or demand the maternity staff do something?

protecting babies like this is almost impossible to do, if the families arent willing to do so themselves. and removing a baby from a family is again very very difficult to do.

How did this guy get on to the ward to see the baby? There is a security system on maternity wards at all our local hospitals, you have to buzz, state who you are visiting and your name, surely they wouldn't have buzzed him in?

This could, however, be SBS. I cannot really comment without further details.

There is now reliable evidence that SBS occurs spontaenously outwith the Amish Community (in which Glutaric Aciduria causes it to happen spontaneously).

The experts then assume that the baby has been shaken and this has caused the brain damage.

Apart from the problem with the miscarriage of justice this also causes the medical profession to avoid looking further at the issue.

Both retinal Haemorrhages and Subdural Haematomae have been identified to occur without any child abuse.

The story reported is clearly one that indicates SBS. The simple point is that SBS is not in itself proof of child abuse. Its elements do occur where there is no abuse.

What rather worries me is what seems to be a current climate of mingled spite and sentimentality that assumes people are evil, and killing and maiming, their children before any proper investigation has been done. So you get these vague, few-details stories in the likes of the Daily Fail that usually emphasise one or both parents being poor, or young, or foreign, people start yowling and yammering and pooing themselves with outrage... and it then transpires that the children in question had undiagnosed medical problems and their parents were in fact loving and competent, and have had to suffer the double agony of losing a child and being blamed and vilified. There has been a case recently of a young mother accused of killing her baby but it seems that the baby's head injuries were caused by a clumsy forceps delivery, not by the mother at all.
