After looking at the news about Mr T I found my self on wikiquote.

Classic:

In an interview with George Negus for the Australian TV program 60 minutes, the following exchange occurred:
Negus: Why do people stop us in the street almost and tell us that Margaret Thatcher isn't just inflexible, she's not just single-minded, on occasions she't plain pig-headed and won't be told by anybody?
Thatcher: Would you tell me who has stopped you in the street and said that?
Negus: Ordinary Britons...
Thatcher: Where?
Negus: In conversation, in pubs...
Thatcher (interrupting): I thought you'd just come from Belize
Negus: Oh this is not the first time we've been here.
Thatcher: Will you well me who, and where and when.
Negus: Ordinary Britons in restaurants and cabs
Thatcher: How many?
Negus: ...in cabs
Thatcher: How many?
Negus:I would say at least one in two
Thatcher:Why won't you tell me their names and who they are?

The dreaded Poll Tax! Funny how people are so accepting of Council tax which really is a crap tax. Based on the size of your house and nothing else. It takes no regard of how much you earn, how many people live in the house (You could have four wage earners in the house and still pay the same as your next door single occupancy neighbour).
In my opinion the whole tax system needs a massive reform but suprise suprise, none of the major parties are will to offer a decent alternative as they are worried about the votes.
Labour had a great chance of doing something with the parliamentary majority they held but as with the reform of the House of Lords and many other issues (and I say this as a labour voter) they blew it.

I hate council tax, £150 a month to get a bin emptied twice......................lovely

daftpunk · 14/06/2009 21:32

kimi..the tories will charge that..but make you eat all your rubbish...they want blood out of a stone.

Kimi · 14/06/2009 21:33

I think I will vote ravin looney

Pan · 14/06/2009 21:34

obviously a well-informed poster there, kimi.

Kimi · 14/06/2009 21:36

It was a joke, you know one of those things you laugh at.....

inscotland · 14/06/2009 21:37

Kimi. Don't ask me. I'm moving to Australia!

Seriously though same shit happens in Scotland as it does where you are now but some areas are cheaper to live in and as you say you get free uni places.

Kimi · 14/06/2009 21:37

The late Lord Such was a friend of my mums and my Aunts, so OK it was a joke only I got

edam · 14/06/2009 21:39

Council tax is crap but the poll tax was a million times worse. C Tax wouldn't be so bad had it not been allowed to race ahead of inflation by a factor of, ooh, lots.

ilovemydogandmrobama · 14/06/2009 21:40

You don't pay the same if one is a single occupant.

But explain this to me. I hate Council Tax. But I hate National Insurance even more which was sky rocketed over past few years. So, why no protests on the streets? I don't know, but only can think that since it's such a complicated tax, people just accept it.

BigGitDad · 14/06/2009 21:46

Exactly Ilovemydog, you pay less!! Yet four people in a house use exactly the same service X 4.

Paolosgirl · 14/06/2009 21:47

Did anyone read that the Kinnocks (yes, both of them) are now 8 million richer, thanks to their public sector pensions, pay and perks from being in British and European politics?

Ahhh..gotta love those Socialists. The same ones that bleat on and on and on and on about the wickedness of Thatcher, but who still haven't -

Reopened the mines
Reintroduced free school milk (remember that one?)
Stopped the sale of council houses
Done anything about the level of taxation in this country
Tightened up the most glaring tax loopholes
Abolished the House of Lords

I mean, shall I go on? Until I see a Labour governemnt doing anything other than lining it's own pockets I shall not condemn any Tory politician.

daftpunk · 14/06/2009 21:51

they cant re-open the mines because the tories flooded them, then filled them with 10 ton of concrete..

Paolosgirl · 14/06/2009 21:54

I'm sure the Govt could muster enough angry Socialists to dig out the concrete if they tried - either that or dig new ones...

daftpunk · 14/06/2009 22:06

ha ha ha ha...you're just too funny...

BigGitDad · 14/06/2009 22:08

DP, did they really fill them with concrete?

Paolosgirl · 14/06/2009 22:11

Thanks, I thought so too!

Ponders · 14/06/2009 22:14

flappythebat:

"In the 1950's, Britain had a Prime Minister who was almost as unpopular as Brown, common denominator, both Labour!"

who was that, then?

Kimi · 14/06/2009 22:18

Re-open the mines for what?
We have mined them dry.

Ponders · 14/06/2009 22:19

oh great post, kimi

Kimi · 14/06/2009 22:21

no really whatg are we going to mine?

mrsruffallo · 14/06/2009 22:22

sauce of course

Paolosgirl · 14/06/2009 22:22

I've no idea what we would reopen them for...and I'm guessing that the reason that they haven't been reopened is that successive Labour Govts don't think it would be worth it either.

Ponders · 14/06/2009 22:24

The majority of Thatcher supporters on this thread are not exactly covering themselves in glory...

Ponders · 14/06/2009 22:26
