After looking at the news about Mr T I found my self on wikiquote.

Classic:

In an interview with George Negus for the Australian TV program 60 minutes, the following exchange occurred:
Negus: Why do people stop us in the street almost and tell us that Margaret Thatcher isn't just inflexible, she's not just single-minded, on occasions she't plain pig-headed and won't be told by anybody?
Thatcher: Would you tell me who has stopped you in the street and said that?
Negus: Ordinary Britons...
Thatcher: Where?
Negus: In conversation, in pubs...
Thatcher (interrupting): I thought you'd just come from Belize
Negus: Oh this is not the first time we've been here.
Thatcher: Will you well me who, and where and when.
Negus: Ordinary Britons in restaurants and cabs
Thatcher: How many?
Negus: ...in cabs
Thatcher: How many?
Negus:I would say at least one in two
Thatcher:Why won't you tell me their names and who they are?

Despise the woman's policies, but would never celebrate anyone dying. (maybe a sigh of relief when Robert Mugabe does though)

she doesn't derserve our respect Abetadad. She was a malicious bitch, but now without power, though I noted she still tried to use her influence to help a fellow nasty bastard Galtieri.

The best I can hope for is that she is ignored. But that isn't going to happen, is it?

abetadad ,well said

lemonmuffin · 14/06/2009 19:30

I agree with Xenia.

I should be used to it by now i suppose, but I'm still shocked and disbelieving at the capacity for hatred and spite held by so many leftwingers towards people who think differently to them.

Kimi · 14/06/2009 19:47

I think she was one of the greatest leaders of our time, I am sorry she is unwell

inscotland · 14/06/2009 19:56

I think she was a disaster as a leader. I am from Scotland and remember all the trouble and hatred that happened when she introduced the poll tax.

I won't mourn her but I wouldn't wish illness on her or anyone for that matter.

TBH I am dreading the blanket news coverage this will bring.

Kimi · 14/06/2009 20:01

I am thinking of moving to Scotland (have family there) so DS1 can have free uni place

edam · 14/06/2009 20:19

The people who are talking about hatred or spite have got it completely arse about tit. Thatcher was spiteful and vindictive, happy to wield her power with savagery. Many people still bear the scars and find it hard to produce an ounce of sympathy for the old crocodile.

How many of you remember that she and her mates attacked Nelson Mandela and supported the apartheid regime in S Africa? Does someone with that level of moral degredation really deserve an ounce of pity?

PortBlacksandResident · 14/06/2009 20:29

Tony Benn called her a sign post (as opposed to Tony Blair being a weather vain) - you could comeback to her a few years later and she'd be pointing in the same direction. Even he had a respect for her - even if he didn't believe in what she did.

lemonmuffin · 14/06/2009 20:30

So that makes it ok to be just as hatefilled?

Thats seems a playground level of argument, 'she did it first miss'....

daftpunk · 14/06/2009 20:33

that's true portblack..as a politician she was focused and determined...no one was going to stop her ruining the country....

fishie · 14/06/2009 20:40

kimi i do hope you are joking.

i was at a church service with mrs thatcher last year. she is rather frail and it is difficult to feel the same way as i did 20 years ago.

but she really did ruin everything.

Kimi · 14/06/2009 20:41

She carved the way for women, that can not be a bad thing

This thread is about an old lady, with dementia, now in hospital with a broken arm.

Im no fan of Thatcher, but I dont think its appropriate to start thinking about how you are going to celebrate her death.

I absolutely agree.

BuckBuckMcFate · 14/06/2009 20:47

Well I for one will be celebrating her passing.

IMO she represents everything that is so wrong with conservative values.

I believe that the legacy of individualism she has left behind her is still felt today and she can take credit for the selfishness that has lead so many people to only be concerned about themselves.

Are we forgetting 'There is no such thing as society'? The support of aparthied (and David Cameron going to SA on a jolly?) Her connections with the arms trade? Poll tax? Clause 28? School milk? Selling off council houses? Privatisation?

Does anyone who gets, and depends upon tax/family credits, really believe that the current Conservative party will not use them as a way of saving money if they are elected? True Conservative thinking would say that if we are poor then it is our own fault and why should the rest of society fund our own fecklessness?

fishie · 14/06/2009 20:48

kimi if you are such an admirer why on earth do you feel the need leave the country to get your child a free university place??

surely you have made plans and laid your free-market-made-money in place for this non surprising expense?

edam · 14/06/2009 20:59

lemon - I think the 'hate' thing has been used as a slur against anyone who despises the way Thatcher tore this country and its industries apart.

It was the pro-Thatcherites who started on about hate - a handy way of distracting people from the woman's actual legacy. When she was in power, her lot were very, very clear about their hatred of anyone not in her gang. It's a bit rich for her apologists to turn round and say 'ooh, people are being mean'.

She epitomised cold-heartedness and would have scored anyone who was 'soft'. Now she's very slightly reaping what she has sown - in that a few people she's never met and couldn't care about are not expressing very much sympathy for her. No skin off her nose.

Kimi · 14/06/2009 21:03

Why should I pay when I can get it free

I was 8 when she got in, yes the poll tax was a fuck up,

lou031205 · 14/06/2009 21:04

What a horrible, disrespectful thread title. Regardless of your politics.

Kimi · 14/06/2009 21:07

Its Jade Goody all over again, you have to be one sick fuck to rejoice in the loss of a human life (saddam hussain, Hitler, Myra Hindly, Ian Huntly do not count as human though so when they went/ go feel free to party )

inscotland · 14/06/2009 21:16

fishie - Scotland is part of the UK. She's not leaving the country for a free uni place.

Kimi · 14/06/2009 21:19

Inscotland It really is an option would you recommend Scottish living?
