After looking at the news about Mr T I found my self on wikiquote.

Classic:

In an interview with George Negus for the Australian TV program 60 minutes, the following exchange occurred:
Negus: Why do people stop us in the street almost and tell us that Margaret Thatcher isn't just inflexible, she's not just single-minded, on occasions she't plain pig-headed and won't be told by anybody?
Thatcher: Would you tell me who has stopped you in the street and said that?
Negus: Ordinary Britons...
Thatcher: Where?
Negus: In conversation, in pubs...
Thatcher (interrupting): I thought you'd just come from Belize
Negus: Oh this is not the first time we've been here.
Thatcher: Will you well me who, and where and when.
Negus: Ordinary Britons in restaurants and cabs
Thatcher: How many?
Negus: ...in cabs
Thatcher: How many?
Negus:I would say at least one in two
Thatcher:Why won't you tell me their names and who they are?

Have not had time to read thread as I have a life however I would like to make the following points:

  1. She has broken an arm and is not dying as far as I am aware.

  2. Please refer to the thread the other day about Gordon Brown, where I made the comment that we all love a new prime minister and hate them by the time they leave power.

Quattrocento · 16/06/2009 12:33

To call Mrs Thatcher evil is nonsense really, isn't it? And not furthering any kind of debate.

Yes I agree that popularity wanes. But at least two of the ministers who resigned (possibly three) were going to be sacked for incompetence/dodgy expenses.

Bucharest · 16/06/2009 12:40

Walkingwiththighosaurs- We don't all love a new prime minister...I never loved Thatcher, or Major and certainly not Brown. I didn't love Princess Tony either, but I did allow myself to be caught up in the hysteria slightly.....

Walkingwiththighosaurs · 16/06/2009 12:51

Exactly Bucharest, we all tend to be a little fickle don't you think?

mrsshackleton · 16/06/2009 13:19

UQD has said it all

Mrs T did not plan a genocide. All this kneejerk "evil" stuff is puerile and the reason the Labour party languished in darkness for nearly two decades - too busy throwing insults at the enemy to bother putting their own house in order.

I am no fan of Mrs T btw

Bucharest · 16/06/2009 13:22

Which throwing insults at the opposition might also explain why the Conservatives have also now been in opposition for more than one decade......

AitchTwoOh · 16/06/2009 13:32

www.answers.com/topic/evil

i'm not going to get married to the word evil here, so if you prefer i call her something softer, i will. but for the record she has at least 4 out of 5 of the definitions nailed here.

mrsshackleton · 16/06/2009 13:43

Absolutely Bucharest

I am no fan of either lot, but nor do I want to see any of their leaders past or present dead

AitchTwoOh · 16/06/2009 13:45

i hardly think that's been the prevailing line of this thread. i definitely don't want to see her dead because the whole of tory england will be in mourning and the obituaries will turn my stomach.

talbot · 16/06/2009 13:46

Well don't read them then.

talbot · 16/06/2009 13:46

Well don't read them then.

Rhubarb · 16/06/2009 13:56

I don't care about her party politics anymore. What she did whilst in office was deplorable, but she was no tyrant. She didn't order mass executions, she didn't have the opposition beaten and tortured, she didn't bulldoze through homes to create Olympic Stadiums.

She wasn't a nice person, but I can think of better examples of evil.

She's a human being. A very frail, old human being. I suggest we respond as human beings and be respectful. I don't believe in an eye for an eye. Celebrating the death of another human being is rather sick and deplorable and it only lowers you down to their level.

Let her die in peace.

AitchTwoOh · 16/06/2009 13:57

lol

AitchTwoOh · 16/06/2009 13:59

she landed the poll tax on the scots as an experiment because she knew we didn't vote for her. that felt at the time like the act of a tyrant. we didn't vote for her, we had not elected her, and she punished us for it. this is not in dispute, she made comments to that effect.

Walkingwiththighosaurs · 16/06/2009 14:02

Because, yes of course she was entirely responsible for all of it you know.......

My, my she must have been nearly as busy as Gordon Brown!

AitchTwoOh · 16/06/2009 14:02

yep again a sure-fire hit on the tyrant definition

doesn't say anything about lining people up to get shot, just 'a ruler who excercises power in a harsh, cruel manner'. not that you'd have seen that side of her if you weren't in wales, the north of england or in scotland, so you're alright jack.

AitchTwoOh · 16/06/2009 14:04

what do you mean, walking? i don't understand.

i think her grand vizier keith joseph was responsible for coming up with many of her most wicked and clever plans, i did say that before as it happens.

Rhubarb · 16/06/2009 14:05

I agree that she wasn't the sole person making those kinds of decisions, she had many people behind her. They would have carried on supporting her too, if the public hadn't revolted and they were scared of losing another election.

She made them shit loads of money.

But no matter what she has done in the past, doesn't she deserve to die in peace and not to have her death celebrated?

Quattrocento · 16/06/2009 14:07

Gotta test a new tax on some guinea-pigs first before going on to clinical trials on human beings, Aitch

mrsruffallo · 16/06/2009 14:07

D o you all have shirt memories or did you not give a shit at the time either?
She caused so much destruction and despair, especially amongst the working class.
Or is that why you're all defending her now?

mrsruffallo · 16/06/2009 14:08

short memories, I don't remember her shirts

AitchTwoOh · 16/06/2009 14:10

they had a pussy bow on them, mrsr, to conceal the bolts in her neck.
