willow - no, I think there is a real difference. (I have lived in all three countries)

where did I say it didn't happen??

I believe if you search for the very first thread about Tomlinson you'll find that I was questioning heavily why the policeman pushed him as he did, and argued (fairly) strongly that there was no reason for it, especially given that he (Tomlinson) was allowed to walk away (had he been pushed for a legitimate reason one would have assumed the police would then have swooped on him rather than stood back watching).

It's been many years since I last went on protest march either in the UK but I have been on them, and yes there is appalling behaviour from both some members of both parties.

I have also been on protests in a country where we were tear gassed and risked being arrested and beaten up purely for turning up on the day. (pre-children I hasten to add)

Sorry FAQ - my first post wasn't aimed at you, more a general point at some of the posts on here (and not just this thread - across a whole range of them on this subject). And then somehow we seem to be arguing like we are at opposite ends of the debate which I don't think we are!

And yes I know that the way they deal with protesters in other countries is a lot harsher.
