Scottish MNers, what quote would you put on the Parliament's wall?

MrsMuddle · 23/03/2009 22:40

Because the Scottish Parliament is 10 years old, they're going to add another quote about Scotland to the Canongate Wall. Of the 24 quotes that are already on the wall, not one is by a woman!

What would you put? You have 50 words max.

Not very Scottish, but fairly apposite...

If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their money, first by inflation and then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around them (around the banks), will deprive the people of their property until their children will wake up homeless
-Thomas Jefferson

I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. Already they have raised up a moneyed aristocracy that has set the Government at defiance. The issuing power should be taken from the banks and restored to the people to whom it properly belongs.
-Thomas Jefferson

?Remember that the theatre of the world is wider than the realm of England?: Mary Queen of Scots, about her treatment by her cousin Elizabeth 1st.

"To him, as to the man by whom salvation has been wrought unto our people, we are bound both by law and by his merits that our freedom may be still maintained, and by him, come what may, we mean to stand". From the Declaration of Arbroath

Or also from the Declaration

It is in truth not for glory, nor riches, nor honours that we are fighting, but for freedom -- for that alone, which no honest man gives up but with life itself.

I was going to quote the bit starting "as long as but a hundred of us remain alive",

Callisto · 24/03/2009 12:11

"You can take our lives but you'll never take our freedom." (to be read with phoney Scots accent a la Mel Gibson).

Saltire · 24/03/2009 13:49

Or how about
"Alex Salmond is an idiot"

Aefondkiss · 24/03/2009 13:51

"such a parcel o rogues in a nation"

singyswife · 24/03/2009 13:52

'What a complete waste of money'.

Or alternatively, 'Proud to be Scottish'.

Macdog · 24/03/2009 13:56

Not a quote, but how about

sums it up

Saltire · 24/03/2009 13:56

lol singyswife!, I like the first one

Saltire · 24/03/2009 13:56

Those days are passed now
And in the past they must remain
But we can still rise now
And be the nation again

How about that?

singyswife · 24/03/2009 13:58

Think that might infringe on some copyright somewhere, Im sure I have heard that before .

Saltire · 24/03/2009 14:03

Got one

"Scotland is a great nation, but its horses are very uncomfortable." Mel Gibson

Macdog · 24/03/2009 14:04

The Scots Character is Forged in Granite
That is no Timid Reed. Shaken by the Wind.

singyswife · 24/03/2009 14:05

'Visit Scotland, eventually it will be a WOMAN run nation'.

Just thought that since the op says not one was by a woman that we should add one about women.

Saltire · 24/03/2009 14:07

"So have you heard about the oyster who went to a disco and pulled a mussell" Billy Connolly

DSM · 24/03/2009 14:08

Saltire - I think the flower of Scotland verse would be a great quote to have.

Macdog · 24/03/2009 14:09

To be kind to all, to like many and love a few, to be needed and wanted by those we love, is certainly the nearest we can come to happiness.

Mary Queen of Scots

Saltire · 24/03/2009 14:19
