I'm a "resting" Catholic, who has found little in the Catholic church's recent statements to tempt me back. While I don't expect centuries of tradition to bow to my views, nothing I have seen of Ratzinger feels like it will be calling me back in the near future.

On the tasteless/old person/will he die soon front, I think I excelled myself last night. PIL's are staying for a couple of days. They were interested in the news in a non-Catholic world affairs way. Even they (not exactly liberal, but have recently learned not to say in public "Its such a shame" about their friends son who married a foreigner) thought he might not be wholly good news. Looking for a bright side I said, well, he's really old, so he's more of a stopgap hopefully. He probably won't be around for more than 5-7 years. I certainly can't imagine him being here, let alone compos mentis in 10 years time. He'll definitely be dead by then. Only when I went to bed I realised they were exactly the same age as him (79) . Think it would have been more tactful to have said something about as assassin's bullet, in the circumstances

hunkermunker · 20/04/2005 09:49

Anchovy! That's EXACTLY the kind of thing I'd have said!

expatinscotland · 20/04/2005 09:50

I'm worried he might have Queen Mother genes and be around for ages.

JanH · 20/04/2005 09:52

Brilliant Austin cartoon in the Guardian! (Scroll down to bottom)

JoolsToo · 20/04/2005 10:00

I'm pleased to say 'I don't give a tinkers cuss'

Caligula · 20/04/2005 10:19

Did I hear wrongly on Today this morning, or was he the head of the Inquisition? (They don't call it the Inquisition anymore of course - they've done a Windscale on it.)

how about just a pic of his hat (dunno the name of it) on the front and just those words inside it????? "Congratulations on your new pope, may he be all you hope for" or summick like that?

Gobbledigook · 20/04/2005 10:47

PMSL Anchovy! Eek!

motherinferior · 20/04/2005 10:49

Anchovy, wow

Caligula · 20/04/2005 10:52

Rather spectacular in-law relations comment Anchovy!

Anchovy · 20/04/2005 11:02

Erm, yes. And they'd just been babysitting! Talk about looking a gift horse in the mouth!

I actually speculated in some detail EXACTLY how long he was likely to live for ("10 years, absolute tops" were, I think, my precise words) and how long of that he would be mentally capable for

Fortunately they are going home this morning!

lilibet · 20/04/2005 12:22

Wonderful!!

LGJ · 20/04/2005 16:01

Is Bob Geldof really the new Pope ???

Well he is a Rats singer

I know, I know it is pretty lame, but hey.

JoolsToo · 20/04/2005 16:04

are you a 'stand-up' in your spare time LGJ?

LGJ · 20/04/2005 16:05

BTW

Anchovies I was ROFL thinking about your in -laws, probably afraid to visist again, or if they do, will make sure they do not step out of line, just in case you have them bumped off, when they reach their sell by date.

LGJ · 20/04/2005 17:35

JT

Wish I was, would earn more money than I do in work.

mummytosteven · 20/04/2005 17:43

re:the Hitler Youth point. I thought that by 1941 (when Ratzinger joined the HJ) it would have been compulsory for German kids to join it - i.e. that he wouldn't necessarily have joined out of choice?

Caligula · 20/04/2005 21:04

Yep, it's a bit of an unfair criticism of Germans - they didn't have an awful lot of choice about it.

Christa Wolf wrote a book about her upbringing under the Nazi regime and there's a bizarre bit about how she spent hours in her room practicing the Hitler salute so as not to be thought a wimp when it became too painful to keep her right arm up for much longer. Think she later joined the Communist Party!

Ratzinger did not have a choice about Hitler Youth or subsequent conscription. He was forced. He was also caught by the Americans as a Nazi deserter.

chipmonkey · 22/04/2005 02:23

Apparently his family was anti-Nazi
