That is the most depressing thing, Riven. I do all I can to try and make a difference, and all around me are people (with children) who only care about the latest mobile phone and issue of Heat. It sometimes makes me feel that actually, the human race isn't really worth saving after all.

no one will care until it actually happens. We're not very good long term planners it seems, as a species.

Thing is what is the point in us turning things off at the plug when China is doing what it is?

Have you read the Lovelocke(SP) report?
Very depressing.
He says the current attempts at conservation are at best pointless and at worst hypocritical money making exercises.
He says the damage is done and that we have to start thinking in an entirely different way about the future.

warthog · 13/03/2009 09:32

every time they come out with a prediction, and then go out and actually take measurements, the measurements are always worse than the predictions.

take the amount of water melting under the ice caps as an example.

i wish people would start doing something and stop thinking about it.

unfortunately i do think it has to be governments who take the initiative because like someone said, too many people are more interested in their 4x4 and heat magazine.

Dilettante · 13/03/2009 09:36

Yes, also that the biggest problem is overpopulation and that a vast reduction in world human population is necessary for the survival of the human race.

Personally I find it less depressing if we are all doomed and there is nothing that can be done, than if we could do something but don't and therefore end up doomed, IYSWIM.

I read somewhere the other day about the Amazon maybe not surviving....www.telegraph.co.uk/earth/environment/climatechange/4976275/Amazon-rainforest-at-risk-of--ecological -catastrophe.html

Litchick · 13/03/2009 10:41

James Lovelock has predicted this for some time hasn't he?
He says that the world has now started a period of renewal in which the planet will save itself but will prove catastrophic for mankind as a species.
His view is that all the recycling, not flying, compost binning in the world will not compensate for the sheer numbers of anaimal and human kind and so the world will rid itself of most of them.
Thos eof us left ( the uk, Tasmania, Alaska) will have to live in an entirely different way.
