It was the second piece about Jade Goody in yesterdays Mail. I only buy it for the tv pages and normally a flick through.

There were two articles about Jade in this week, the first was run of the mill i suppose, but the second written by some woman called Jan Moir was just unbelievable, to the point where at the end I wanted to rip the womans head off.
Lines like 'her friends are hoping that Girls Aloud wont play their hit Sound of the Underground'!!!! WTF, Im sure not one of them has even thought it, its just some snide comment from some stupid woman with no chin. This along with things about chav funerals etc etc was just appalling.

I have never wanted to complain about this sort of thing before, but I am enraged
Im not a huge Jade fan, but I dont knock her one bit for what shes doing, and if I was in her shoes I would probably try and get every last penny to secure my childrens future. This woman was suggesting she already had 'enough' money!

Just needed to rant cos all dh could say whilst i was shouting was, 'well dont read it then'

It was the Mail...
A hideous paper, imo.
Don't pick one up again!
Come and join my smug Grundian readers club.

poopscoop · 22/02/2009 19:44

i read that article too moss ad was equally and

mosschops30 · 22/02/2009 19:44

yes but even in the mail I dont expect to read such made up shite which is just written to try and be 'funny'

electra · 22/02/2009 19:46

The Mail is sick - and hates women! I'm surprised you haven't realised that before...

poopscoop · 22/02/2009 19:49

i like the DM but certain articles are just bolleaux

piscesmoon · 22/02/2009 19:52

I think the Daily Mail is dreadful. The best thing is not to read it-ever.

supergluebum · 22/02/2009 19:53

It's rough with the smooth though. Not a DM fan. But Jade has lived her life through the tabloids and the Mail isn't the worst one out there. That said I do wonder which demographic they are trying to appeal to? People who think they are better than the Sun, but still want to read salacious details and spurious gossip. Just be more discerning. Chances are Jade and Co (Max Clifford) sold that story to the DM, so don't loose any sleep.

helsy · 22/02/2009 19:55

What do you expect? It's the Mail. The media have been judging her ever since she became a sleb. What makes you think they're going to stop now?

Meglet · 22/02/2009 19:56

The DM is a women hating / xenophobic / homophobic bit of rag.

MrsMcCluskey · 22/02/2009 19:58

loling at you justifying why you buy the DM!

violethill · 22/02/2009 19:59

Agree with superglue.

From what I've read (not the DM... would never pay to read that crock of shite!) Jade Goody has lived her happiest years through the media... she wanted publicity and she got it. She knows as well as the rest of us that she has no particular qualities that have earned her fame and recognition... she has just played the media.

None of this takes away from the awful situation she's in, wish none of us would wish on anyone, but at the end of the day, her children are going to be financially far better off than most children who lost a parent at that age.

harpsichordcarrier · 22/02/2009 20:00

the DM is vile, with vile articles expressing vile opinions. the problem is not so much the effect on person being written about, but the fact that millions of readers are nodding in agreement after having their prejudices confirmed and their sense of moral superiority confirmed.
I pity them, really, but I think it is insidious and harmful

nickytwotimes · 22/02/2009 20:01

See, I think the Mail IS worse than the others though, becasue as you say it is read by those who 'think' they are better than the Sun.

jeminthecity · 22/02/2009 20:02

Don't buy the DM, its a shit rag.

nickytwotimes · 22/02/2009 20:02

think not 'think'

supergluebum · 22/02/2009 20:21

Agreed Nickytwotimes, the DM is constantly read over the phone to me by my mum an otherwise Daily Telegraph reading person (just as bad IME), but that's the trick. As a publication it's a disguise for what it really is, a tabloid. As bad as the Sun etc, but playing on 1980s middle class, conservative values......arrggggggh rant over..makes my skin crawl....but so does Jade Goodey to be honest. I do have empathy for her situation, but I'm not a hypocrite.

southeastastra · 22/02/2009 20:28

omg i read that too.

i quite liked the magazine article though agreed with that totally. and they mentioned mumsnet.

violethill · 22/02/2009 20:29

I think you describe how many of us feel superglue. I feel enormous empathy for anyone in her situation, but I can't like or respect the woman. Achieving celebrity status through absoultely no talent, skill or even good personal qualities is a pretty morally vacuous way to live one's life.

frecklyspeckly · 22/02/2009 21:33

IMO Jan Moir is utterly nasty even for a DM journalist. Everything she writes is terribly nasty-under the lame tag 'she tells it as it is'.

And yet I buy it and then feel bad... why? the big papers give me a headache and I think I am too posh for the Sun. I am clearly deluding myself.

And i like the puzzles page.

Totally agree that they have both earned money in a pretty reprehensible way.

Villette · 23/02/2009 09:59

As I posted under the previous Anthea Turner thread, Jan Moir is a nasty bit of work.

When she worked at the "Telegraph" she did a hatchet job on a local restaurant, which was unfair and upset the owners.

She also wrote a profile of Vanessa Redgrave, which sneered at the fact that Vanessa liked to have the scent of hyacinths in her home as they were her late mother's favourite flower. There was also a quote from Vanessa saying that she had always believed that she would have five children but she had four (one of which was stillborn). Moir made a comment to the effect "aren't there enough Redgraves cluttering up the acting profession?"

What do you expect from a writer who thinks it is OK to sneer at someone's late mother and their stillborn child?

mayorquimby · 23/02/2009 10:47

well i'm not sure how i feel about it (the jade goody scenario in general), obviously that particular article is terrible but surely it is all of jades own making.
for want of a better phrase if you live by the sword you died by the sword, and she has spent the last number of years actively pursuing press attention, especially that of the tabloids. now if you vie for press attention a lot of it will be nagative, you have to accept that.
then when you no longer want press attention, unfortunaely it is not something you can just turn off like a tap.7however jade is not trying to avoid meida attention in her final days, if anything she has gone on a pr overdrive mission (for whatever motives, they've all been speculated upon) so while i think that whoever takes joy in writing or reading stuff like that is reprehensible, i don't really feel too much sympathy for jade over this article, i obviously do for her illness, because at the moment she is asking for the attentions of the media. and if you ask for that, you can't control what they write after that.

WilyWombat · 23/02/2009 10:55

Well I cant comment on the Mail as I think ive only ever read it when it was handed to me free on a plane

Jan Moir sounds like another journalist like Janet Street Porter, probably friendless and unattractive who takes out her anger at the world by being unpleasant to other people...honestly the most productive thing you can do is ignore her!

Im kind of in the middle ground on Jade, ive never quite "got" her celebrity but who can blame her for taking whats on offer and doing her best for her children.

unfitmother · 23/02/2009 11:01

May I suggest you buy something else 'for the TV pages'?
