....is the exclamation "golly!" offensive?

Just heard on Radio 4, the word derives from the Negro word god. So I suppose it has always been blasphemous, but that aside, is it now offensive?

"So do you actually think that anyone who uses "Jesus" as a swearword should be "done" for a religious hate crime? "

oh no! just heathens

"Or do you think that anyone who uses it as a swearword should be interrogated as to their personal belief system and anyone whose beliefs don't tally with yours should then be "done" even though their actions and intention were exactly the same as the Christian sweary person?"

heathens should be fined and there should be heathen inspectors roaming the streets

christians would carry a card saying they are christians

and if your not a christian - you can't blashpheme

HeadFairy · 07/02/2009 17:17

No-one expects the Spanish Inquisition.

Note to self, been watching far too much Monty Python on UKDAVE3+1

Loving these posts - course all religious rules are made up, and made up by men which is why they're so misogynist!

As for going to hell - all the interesting people go to hell so (if i believed it existed) I'd far rather go there then have to go to heaven with Cliff Richard and listen to him singing for eternity!

HeadFairy · 07/02/2009 17:22

Burn in hell with Marc Bolan, Jimi Hendrix and Marilyn Munroe or heaven with Cliff. I know which I'd prefer!

PortAndLemon · 07/02/2009 17:24

So you're not actually talking about an actual religious hate crime, then, given that there's no "hate" element involved. You're just suggesting that non-Christians should be treated less favourably than Christians (well, probably. Perhaps your heathen inspectors will be fining heathens but be referring any sweary Christians to the Inquisition to be burned at the stake for blasphemy).

spongebrainbigpants · 07/02/2009 17:28

Btw, just to keep my post relevant to thread title - think CT is a racist old bint who deserved to be sacked!

Just for the record!

HeadFairy · 07/02/2009 17:31

Well quite probably, she strikes me as one of those upper class twit types who think nothing of beating their dogs, shagging their staff and using racist language.

spongebrainbigpants · 07/02/2009 17:34

Exactly, although yeeeuuuuccchh at thought of CT shagging her staff (or anyone for that matter!)

HeadFairy · 07/02/2009 17:37

She probably doesn't take off her riding boots and uses her whip when she's feeling particularly fiesty!

spongebrainbigpants · 07/02/2009 17:43

Barf!!!

You are one sick lady HeadFairy!

Peachy · 07/02/2009 17:49

No, use it far too refularly for dh's taste

spongebrainbigpants · 07/02/2009 17:52

??? @ peachy

Sorry, don't understand!

Peachy · 07/02/2009 17:58

Oh and latrgely agree with OBM's posts

what you thought of a golliwog when you were three is alrgely iirelevant: three year ols dont do racism, they do whtevr they're taught or play with what is there. Golliwogs were justb there.

Now we know better.

The fact we even have ne at all fills me with horror, can't bin it (its away in the wardrobe, dh's birthay gift aged 1- all he has from his long gone Nan) but I think, if dh were to pass on I would dispose of it the, sad though it is in terms of his Nan bieng more motherly than his Mum ever was, it's just not appropriate now and I would hate for me to go and then somewone to find it and think Ina pproved of the thing iyswim.

Peachy · 07/02/2009 17:58

spongebrain- had only read OP , sorry- came back again

PortAndLemon · 07/02/2009 18:22

Peachy -- just a thought, could you get a crafty type to make it over into some other kind of toy, or even incorporate the fabric into something else? Then you have the sentimental tie but in a better form.

Peachy · 07/02/2009 18:31

I culod do that PandL (I was a doyenne of A&C when I started here LOL, just got distracted by life) but Dh wouldn't let me near it atm,., good idea for one day.

DumbledoresGirl · 07/02/2009 18:52

Bum
Bugger
Sod
Crap

No, not a comment on the thread so far, but an attempt to return to its theme, which is not CT or golliwogs or religious bigotry.

So bugger off religious bigots. Dusk has fallen and you should be praying.

OP posts:
Peachy · 07/02/2009 19:22

Oi PandL do I nto make a good enough not bigoted Christian for you? i thought I was quite good on that front meself

Buggers the lot of ya

Oh and if anybodya ske me tocarry a Christian ID card I'm refusing, God knows. Nobody else should be bothered.

(SOrry DG back to you......)

yes Golliwogs. Crap toys in the seventies, evil things represented the terrible side of manind now. Ditch 'em, hide 'em, never but one.

Peachy · 07/02/2009 19:23

representing

UnquietDad · 07/02/2009 20:00

I didn't actually make the connection between the racist insult "wog" and the seemingly-innocent "golliwog" for a very long time.

onebatmother: "neutrality could quite reasonably be perceived as reactionary"? Well, if it is, that's a problem for the perceiver, not me. I know I'm not racist and so do people who know me. I was just trying to have an interesting conversation about childhood.

UnquietDad · 07/02/2009 20:01

lisaofpalatine - "heathens", LOL. Long time since I have heard that particular term of abuse.
