Its not long enough IMO

paolosgirl · 23/01/2009 14:21

I'm sure the ladies in Cell Block H will make her feel most welcome.

Poor Shannon - so hope she's doing well.

Almeida · 23/01/2009 14:23

She should have to pay back the costs of this case instead of the tax payers.

gonaenodaethat · 23/01/2009 14:23

"Having regard to their low intellect...
neither defendant seems to have the cognitive ability to devise and orchestrate such an elaborate offence with any degree of likelihood of success."

Thick as mince.

SparklyGothKat · 23/01/2009 14:26

not long enough, she will be out in 4 years

Fable · 23/01/2009 14:30

@ thick as mince

TheNinkynork · 23/01/2009 14:30

Agree with SparklyGothKat. Baby P's mum has already served what, 18 months? They'll both be free soon at huge further cost to the taxpayer no doubt

FimboRabbieBurns · 23/01/2009 14:31

I wonder where the poor wee soul is now.

Fable · 23/01/2009 14:32

Whereever she is, she's a lot better off than where she was.

cikecaka · 23/01/2009 14:36

She got 8 years, a mother here in Ireland, pleaded guilty to raping, neglect and abuse on her six children yesterday and only got 7 years, because the laws here are only for men who commit incest and not women

Maclaren · 23/01/2009 14:52

How mad is that cike

I am sure I saw somewhere that Shannon is very happy with the family they have put her with and she is doing well (thick it was part of the court notes)

almeida karen matthews has never worked in her life, how would she pay costs?

TheWizardofOz · 23/01/2009 14:55

I don't knwow why you are all so worried abotu the tax payer when you all are funding the Olympics!

paolosgirl · 23/01/2009 16:20

At least there's a chance that the Olympics will put something back into the economy. I'll bet that Karen Matthews will never be guilty of that - if indeed she knows what the economy is.

nancy75 · 23/01/2009 16:23

thats good, she'll be out in time to have a few more kids

LynetteScavo · 23/01/2009 16:24

Well you've all gone a bit Daily Mail haven't you?

"She got 8 years, a mother here in Ireland, pleaded guilty to raping, neglect and abuse on her six children yesterday and only got 7 years, because the laws here are only for men who commit incest and not women"

that was disgusting.some news sources were reporting that they literally had to search for something to convict her under and it was based on a law over a century old because there was no relevant legislation for women.

FAQtothefuture · 23/01/2009 16:28

tbh I think the Olympics are going to be a bloody godsend now we're in an official recession, yes we may be fudning, but the cost per person is pretty small. Whereas the stadiums etc have to be built so at least some people will have definite jobs to build the stuff needed.

Right now I think any job opportunity is a good thing.

nancy75 · 23/01/2009 16:29

if not having much respect for a woman that arranged the drugging and kidnap of one of her children, whilst trying to steal money from her friends, neighbours and a newspaper means that i have gone a bit daily mail, then yes , isuppose i have.

poopscoop · 23/01/2009 16:30

shame we have to continue paying for her, now she is in prison. But the good side is, that she will have to 'work' in there - prob the first time in her life she will have to lift a finger.

MadameCastafiore · 23/01/2009 16:31

They need to tackle the problem of unemployment and poverty in the area she comes from - yes the sentance was leniant and there are many mothers who live in the same circumstances as she grew up and lived in who wouldn't do it but I feel a little sorry for her due to her lack of opportunity and her obvious lack of education she ended up doing something terrible.

Saying that the first post I wrote and then deleted did mention her being steralised before she gets out!

paolosgirl · 23/01/2009 16:33

It's people like Karen Matthews who drive you to the Daily Mail. Of course, we could go all Guardian-y and blame society, but I prefer to blame the guilty party.

Northernlurker · 23/01/2009 16:36

Well I think it's a reasonable sentence and personally I wouldn't want to spend five minutes in a womens prison - or any prison - let alone four years. Everybody will know her, her life will be isolated and terrible, she no longer has her children or partner and she is a very stupid person. There's no getting off lightly here.

FAQtothefuture · 23/01/2009 16:37

sorry MadameC - I don't buy the "poor and uneducated" line.

I know plenty of people who are (or have been) poor, unemployed, lack of education who wouldn't do something so stupid...
