Absolutely staggering

wow

They are not married. A 15 year old can't get legally married in Turkey.

Turkey is like France where only the civil wedding counts. The religious ceremony is just a ceremony and illegal to do when the couple isn't already married by a state official.

georgiemum · 19/01/2009 13:46

Another one??? What is it about Turkish waiters and schoolgirls?

CoteDAzur · 19/01/2009 13:46

I'm guessing the "mother" doesn't realize this

Simplysally · 19/01/2009 13:51

I wonder how much they got from selling this story?

Gunnerbean · 19/01/2009 15:48

If you read the article the "mother" appears to be quite happy with the arrangement.

She says she is very proud of her daughter who she describes as "a strong, independent woman who will find her own way in life".

With a mother like that, I suppose she is better off living 2000 miles away from her!

Yeah, strikes me as a win-win situation. Mother gets her newspaper money, dd gets away from mother, hubby gets his passport.

CoteDAzur · 19/01/2009 16:29

Err... No he doesn't. Because, as I said before, they are not married.

They will not be recognized as 'married' anywhere in the world, including in the UK. No passport, no formal recognition of any kind.

Gunnerbean · 19/01/2009 16:30

No, they definitely won't be able to get a settlement visa for him to come and live in the UK.

They are not legally married in Turkey (only had a Nikah ceremony - an Islamic "marriage" which is not recognised in Turkey as it's a secular state).

You have to be 18 to marry in a civil ceremony in Turkey and you have to have a marriage licence issued by the state in order to apply for a settlement visa.

So, it looks ike he won't gain much out of it all. She'll be back in England long before she turns 18 - and most probably before she turns 16 once the novelty of all this nonsense wears off.

Oh, and he'd have to be married for 3 years before he could apply for a British passport in any case.

You don't get a British passport as soon as you marry a British person.

Hardly a mature girl if she went out drinking alcohol at 15 and getting into 'mischief'.
My mother would've dragged my arse straight back to the UK.

Shitemum · 19/01/2009 16:37

I'm pretty sure you can't 'convert to Islam' just like that either. It takes many months of preparation surely?

Stories like this just normalise idiocy IMO

nancy75 · 19/01/2009 16:38

my mum would have dragged me home kicking and screaming if she had to, but then my mum didnt call my brothers fred perry and jack daniels, says it all really.

fuzzywuzzy · 19/01/2009 16:39

Her mother is clearly not an Mner. According to that article her sons are named Jack Daniels, Fred Perry (after the brand) ....

MmeLindt · 19/01/2009 16:41

Hmm. I don't know about the rest of you but if my 15yo DD left home and flew to Turkey (or anywhere for that matter) to be with a boy/man she met on the internet, I would be on the next flight out to fetch her back.

She is called Jolean, her sister is called Nikita, her brothers Jack Daniels and Fred Perry.

[gets judgeyjudgeypants on]

wannaBe · 19/01/2009 16:41

the 13 year old who did this some years back was made a ward of the british courts iirc and brought back.

She had a baby if I remember and later wrote about how the man forced himself on her .

What on earth are these parents thinking.

fuzzywuzzy · 19/01/2009 16:42

Shitemum, anyone can convert to Islam, all one does is make the testimony of faith, ie 'I believe there is No God but Allah and the Prophet Mohammad (pbuh) is his servant and messanger', no ceremony no fuss that's all.

CoteDAzur · 19/01/2009 16:45

"Nikah" is just the Turkish (well, Arabic, but used in Turkey as well) word for "wedding". It can mean civil wedding as well as the religious ceremony.

Yes, you can convert to Islam in seconds. All you need to do is say "I am witness that there is only one God, and Mohammad is his messenger" (iirc) several times in Arabic and choose a "Muslim name" for yourself.

It's a bit more complicated for men, who need to be circumcised (ouch!).

CoteDAzur · 19/01/2009 16:46

Maybe she is mature compared to her mum.

Cote, grown men don't have to be circumcised on conversion, the testimony of faith said once is enough, changing ones name isn't necessary either unless the name has a bad meaning, altho people are always on about changing names, an arabic name is not necessary to be muslim.

My dad had a friend who in all seriousness thought every muslim person had to be called Mohammad....can you imagine the confusion???

CoteDAzur · 19/01/2009 17:02

Yes, grown men need to be circumcised in Turkey to convert to Islam.

Every so often one makes an appearance in the papers, complete with the sunnat dresses and holding the front of his tunic (so it won't touch, presumably), looking completely miserable

I suggested it to DH before we got married (he didn't buy it). I will never forget his face at that moment, and recall it on various occasions:

DH - "I love you so much. I will do anything for you."
Cote - "Well, there is this one thing, if you want to marry me..."
DH -

CoteDAzur · 19/01/2009 17:03

And everyone who converts to Islam needs a "Muslim name" in Turkey, as well. Not sure if that is the way in Arab countries.

fuzzywuzzy · 19/01/2009 17:06

Cote nooooo that's cruel , a man who does that really must be insane and possibly in love!

ismellofbabysick · 19/01/2009 17:08

the mother is an inspiration to us all - NOT.
