I think seeing as his body is still warm, this is quite a premature discussion and i feel the need to point out i am quite shocked by the immediate discussion of a dead persons substitute. I realise this will come in the next few days but i truly believe that one night it could just be left in remembrance.

FF - I must apologise - but also feel you should blame the media for that..........the page on the BBC was put up on the BBC website before it was announced he'd died - so speculation had already started.

jampots · 02/04/2005 23:02

actually I agree with FF on this one.

ScummyMummy · 02/04/2005 23:05

Sorry, FF and jampots.

suedonim · 02/04/2005 23:10

Please don't tell me what I may or may not discuss. I am capable of thinking about more than one thing at a time and can consider the Pope whilst thinking about what happens next. Speculation has been going on for weeks, if not months, in any case.

And I don't see the next pope as a substitute for this one. Imo, it's a progression or continuation and I don't doubt Pope JP himself spent many an hour devoted to this very subject.

is everyone okay on here? - it's gone very quiet.

fairyfly · 02/04/2005 23:32

No need to apologise to me, i was just sharing my feelings online, it wasn't necessary, i realise i could have just logged out and felt it privately. I am sorry for making this thread awkward.

I know it is upsetting for some and this is gonna sound cold, but I prayed for the Holy Father to go quickly. He was very ill, and his decision not to go back into hospital was indicative of his own knowledge that the end of his life on Earth was near. He prepared himself for death and was serene whilst waiting for it. Instead of praying for a miracle, I instead prayed for God to guide the next leader.

As a Catholic myself, I don't think the Holy Father would have been offended by talk of his successor at any time after his death. After all, he chose many of the candidates himself.

I, too, am hoping s/one is chosen who will bring the Church into the 21st century and hopefully recognise and extend the role that women play.

He is beyond becoming offended now and has the peace that only the end of his long illness could bring.

He died the way he lived during his Papacy, with great dignity.

may he rest in peace

I think it's a great thing to happen. the poor pope has to be pope to the last breath,he is at peace now, though we may be saddend by this I'm sure he would not want people to grieve over him, just to rejoice the good that some people believe he has brought to this world.
