Thought JPII was v brave towards the end of his life, though it was uncomfortable to watch sometimes.

I was looking at the Guardian's shortlist for new pope today and thought this guy sounded rather fab. He's got a pilots license, speaks seven languages and is fiendishly clever, apparently, as well as being a champion of anti-poverty action and human rights. This non-Catholic has made her choice!

JanH · 02/04/2005 22:35

He's 58 too, scummy! Seems so young now...

I think we should all have a vote, how about you?

he sounds like a good choice to me.

expatinscotland · 02/04/2005 22:38

SM,
I'm interested in reading more about some of the possible candidates. Was there more info about them in The Guardian?

This candidate sounds fab. My grandparents were all Mexican, however, so I am biased!

JanH · 02/04/2005 22:39

The candidates

Gwenick · 02/04/2005 22:40

expat the bbe news website has info on some of the possible candidates (and pictures)

Gwenick · 02/04/2005 22:41

more info on them

JanH · 02/04/2005 22:43

What happened last time

mamadadawahwah · 02/04/2005 22:46

I have read Cardinal Ratzinger is a shoe in?

JanH · 02/04/2005 22:47

Hm - we have heard we hope he isn't

Gwenick · 02/04/2005 22:47

a shoe in???

JanH · 02/04/2005 22:48

Meaning a dead cert, Gweick. Not sure why though!

ScummyMummy · 02/04/2005 22:48

It's really quite an exciting process, isn't it? (Hope that's not offensive to anyone mourning JPII) Would love to have a mumsnet vote, janh- what a good idea!

Gwenick · 02/04/2005 22:48

not what I've read! The 'most' likely candidate 'apparently' could come from Latin America as they have the biggest 'share' of the vote

fairyfly · 02/04/2005 22:51

I find it very comforting that the Pope himself has handpicked the majority who will be designating our next.

JanH · 02/04/2005 22:51

Justine should be able to arrange it, scummy (being omnipotent !)

suedonim · 02/04/2005 22:51

Several bits I've read said they're likely to go for an older Pope because long papacies are generally not seen to be a good thing. They might even choose a very old one as a kind of interim pope until the one they really want reaches a suitable age. I found myself looking at a list of candidates today and wondering why they were all men - until the penny dropped. D'oh! But it is weird nowadays to have a job going, where a woman can't be considered.

mamadadawahwah · 02/04/2005 22:51

I think he will come from L. America or Africa. Maybe a black pope!

JanH · 02/04/2005 22:53

I think a woman would be an excellent choice, suedonim...!

Gwenick · 02/04/2005 22:54

Maybe a black pope!

Now that the media really WOULD love !

ScummyMummy · 02/04/2005 22:54

lol at the all male shortlist, Suedonim.

mamadadawahwah · 02/04/2005 22:54

Certain catholic "seers" and mystics predict a black pope as the first signs of the "end".

JanH · 02/04/2005 22:54

A black woman - perfect!

mamadadawahwah · 02/04/2005 22:55

i was gonna say that Jan.!
