Has no-one started a thread about Rachel Nickell's killer finally being brought to justice?

Such a terribly tragic case in so many ways. It's heartbreaking to think that if he'd been caught earlier Rachel and Samantha and Jazmine Bisset could still be alive

The press coverage says Rachel's parents haven't seen their grandson for years, either. So desperately sad.

It was too horrible, that's why. The poor woman and little girl who were murdered a year later. The police really messed it up.

Her son went with his father to France. I thouht it was strange that Rachels father said in his comment outside the court something about never seeing his daughter or having grandchildren.

mynameis · 19/12/2008 13:36

I have often thought of her son over the years. He would be almost grown up now, I hope it can give him & his father some kind of peace to know that Rachels killer has finally been bought to justice. What a complete shambles the police made of it all

I hope also it gives Colin Stagg some freedom because you know how dirt always sticks even when its unfairly. Though I dont think the way hes handled things (books etc) have been particulalry nice.

tiredemma · 19/12/2008 13:41

Terrible. Awful for all involved.

madlentileater · 19/12/2008 13:42

and, the police don't seem to think they need to look at what went wrong.

edam · 19/12/2008 18:57

I don't think Colin Stagg's had much option. He was demonised by the Met and by the tabloids. No way he could earn a living - who on earth would give him a job?

When his trial fell apart, the Met led a dirty tricks campaign against him, briefing the tabs that he'd got away with murder on a technicality. Shameful lies.

Bit of a side issue, but I seem to remember Rachel Nickell being described as a single parent when she died. She was obviously not, if that interview with her DS's father is anything to go by- it says he was her partner.

V good thing that her murderer has at last been identified.

really dingding?

What happened to that poor Woman Samantha and her daughter was like something out of a horror film. The police fucked up big time.

clayre · 19/12/2008 19:15
Sad
CrushWithEyeliner · 19/12/2008 19:18

Sounds like something strabne happened between her parents and the Father/ Son.....

wrapstar · 19/12/2008 19:18

Poor bloody Colin Stagg. Beaten, abused, reviled, libelled...and it's still going on. YOu should be ashamed of yourselves. He had NOTHING to do with this killing, except as a victim.

wrapstar · 19/12/2008 19:19

To be honest I think it's time the parents and Andre Handscombe both apologised to Stagg for the things they said about him over the years.

CrushWithEyeliner · 19/12/2008 19:22
Hmm
wrapstar · 19/12/2008 19:24

Why the rolled eyes? That man is a victim. It stole years and years of his life. He lived in fear of his life.

BigGitDad · 19/12/2008 19:25

I agree with Wrapstar, not just Colin Stagg but the woman that was also found not guilty of murdering the child the other week thathad been in jail for a couple of years. No apology ther either. Oh yes and the Brazilian that got shot....
I'm sorry but in all aspects of life we are accontable unless that is your are in the police force.

I kind of felt sad for the little boy who grew up to be a mentally ill murderer too tbh. He had Aspergers and went on to develop schizophrenia after being stamped on in the head almost daily at school because he was "different", had parents who neglected him, and was sexually abused too. It makes you wonder what might become of any number of children we are letting down.

This is not to absolve him of responsibility btw, or to diminish the tragedy of the people he killed and families he left bereft forever. It's just that the entire story is so unbearably sad.

tiredemma · 19/12/2008 19:32

I read somewhere yesterday that the Police Photographer who took the photos of Samantha Bissets body was so traumatised that they had to take two years off work.

wrapstar · 19/12/2008 19:33

Yes, he was lonely, inadequate and a bit odd. Cast iron proof that someone is a murderer
It's exactly that kind of thinking that was directly responsible for hundreds of women being raped and a mother and child raped and murdered by the real killer left free.

frankbestfriend · 19/12/2008 19:34

Colin Stagg is a socially inept man who sunbathed nude, hardly reason for him to be vilified and have his life ruined.

dingdong, you should write for The Sun

AnarchyInAManger · 19/12/2008 19:37

I saw this in the Guardian and was pretty horrified at just how many opportunities appear to have been missed to catch the man responsible.

Another thing that is interesting is how the police allowed "Cracker"-style profiling to determine the investigation, and it led to a lot of mistakes being made, like not linking Rachel's murder to Samantha's and her daughter's. The psychologist involved wrote a book Jigsaw Man, and in it he seems convinced Stagg was the guy. So much for that theory.
