Stop Witch hunting Ross and Brand

soooooo totally agree with this article

I am wondering which comedians will be fired next?

I guess people won't be happy until the BBC is running costume dramas 24/7.

Pol! Why aren't you on my new verr' cultural threads? Onebat's already let me down...

policywonk · 30/10/2008 22:39

Ooh sorry, where are they? I've only just got here...

witcheseve · 30/10/2008 22:42

Policywonk, I read the'Times' today and they said that.

Habbibu · 30/10/2008 22:43

Theatre and Poetry. Though I think I should point out that there is a poem on there which, though beautiful, may hit a raw nerve (themildmanneredaxemurderer on Thu 30-Oct-08 11:16:35) - hope that's ok. Just didn't want it to ambush you.

policywonk · 30/10/2008 22:44

Ah, that might have been the case while he was on a day-to-day suspension earlier this week. From this evening he's on a 12-week suspension without pay -time which will be deducted from his overall contract.

policywonk · 30/10/2008 22:48

i hate theatre and poetry. sorry.

Habbibu · 30/10/2008 22:51

you and onebat are one and the same. You're not proper wankers at all

dweezle · 31/10/2008 07:12

Keep hearing this phrase 'edgy'. Care to debate the meaning of edgy? I don't think it's anything to do with puerile toilet humour and using the word fuck in every sentence. Nothing edgy about that - I can hear it outside our local supermarket 7 days a week.

OrmIrian · 31/10/2008 08:15

Hmmm... tend to agree dweezle.

Liffey · 31/10/2008 10:12

Blackrock. The apology, and for that matter their remorse, genuine or to save their own necks is NOT the issue for Georgina Baillie.

It's out there now, forever.

Liffey · 31/10/2008 10:17

And. It's not "school" all over again.

With time we do get to leave school behind us. Maybe 20 or 30 people who might remember, if pushed, with 3 Michelobs and a bag of Tayto for old time sake.. that Jenny Johnson shagged Peter Lawlor on the night of the Inter cert results on HOwth beach, OR.............. whatever!!!! But that is the past.

But that is entirely different from having it broadcast to the entire nation, where everybody in your FUTURE knows that about you. In fact, for everybody she'll ever meet in the future, this is the FIRST thing they'll know about her.

So, no, nothing at all like school.

PS apologies to anybody really called Jenny Johnson.

i like this comment from one of the gruniad readers:

"Dear BBC,

I wish to complain in the strongest possible terms about your entirely incorrect and reactive decision to suspend two of your employees today. Its the worst decision the BBC has made since it decided to bring back Dr Who rather than the Tripods, and the very public manner in which you chose to announce the disciplinary measures has only made matters worse ? your director generals emphatic capitulation in his statement today resembled a platoon of French soldiers with orders to surrender.

Lets be honest, the comments made by Ross and Brand were not particularly funny, but nor were they even as remotely offensive as 98.9% of the British population appears to be claiming they were. Sachs clearly isnt particularly fussed, and his granddaughters first instinct was to seek out Max ?Ill take 15% Clifford and The Sun newspaper, which tells you all you need to know about how offended she was, i.e. not even slightly.

The absolute least I expect for my £135 (or whatever it is per year) is for the BBC to show a little backbone when facing a pitchfork-wielding mob of parochial rabble-rousers stirred by the asinine whining of the tabloid press and the rabid hysteria of the Daily Mail, a paper I wouldnt even wipe my arse with. Instead, I discover the BBC is in fact an organisation with the structural integrity of a wet paper bag; your abject acquiescence is almost as shameful as your decision not to re-commission Kickstart.

I mean, just look at it: while our Bullingdon Club mentalist of a shadow chancellor remains embroiled in scandal and the most significant American election since the end of the Second World War looms a mere six days away, your main news page is now dominated by breaking news updates on whether the gothic p0rn actress granddaughter of a moderately famous actor deems Russell Brand and Jonathan Ross worthy of employment with the Corporation. For Christs sake, shes on Bebo. Bebo! Arent people on Bebo normally behind bars or living under an ASBO? Get some balls.

Of course Russell Brand is an idiot - and even more irritating than Fearne Cotton - and Jonathan Ross pay packet is quite simply obscene (and you know it) but I would have hoped than the BBC was strong enough to resist succumbing to the pathetic faux-outrage witnessed over the last 48 hours by 18,000+ moronic timewasters, all of whom, frankly, need marching into the nearest mincing machine.

Kind regards

p.s ? If you want to suspend/immediately sack George Lamb, please do feel free. He actually DOES offend me. Shabba! "

LittleBellaLugosi · 31/10/2008 14:22

LOL.

s/he's wrong about Fearne Cotton though (is that how you spell it?)

No-one is more irritating than her.

blackrock · 31/10/2008 14:22

If the girl involved wasn't involved with the media herself and gaining publicity from the event itself then I might agree, but she needs publicity and has got more than she ever imagined, which will enhance her work as a nude model and burlesque dancer. In her position, I would make the most of it.

A one night stand with a big mouthed celebrity, did she think he had an inkling of discretion about him? Highly unlikely I think.

Playing with the media is a hard game, but I think she is strong enough to manage it and has done well out of it, giving herself promotion for her own work.

There is too much going on in life to remember the name of the girl, perhaps some people like to just from a newspaper report, but others can judge people for the person they meet...

She isn't the victim, her grandfather was and has been apologised to. In fact was apologised to immediately following the phone calls as part of the recording. The are idiots, but they parody themselves. They laugh at their own inadequacies.

Liffey · 31/10/2008 18:19

But don't you get that their behaviour is isolated from her character, good or bad. Her character isn't relevant. What they did isn't less bad because we can neatly slot her into the 'Whore' category and feel ok about it all.

PHEW< keep the comedy coming. The girl was a whore anyway.

blackrock · 31/10/2008 20:02

I did not pass judgement upon her, just pointing out that her career needs media interest and so this event is useful to her career, so propagating media interest about a mistake, which has been apologised for, is in her interest.

Liffey · 31/10/2008 20:14

She isn't the victim????

Another girl might have been absolutely suicidal after this debacle. She's clearly not chaste enough to deserve the public's respect but that's not the point is it?

Her career isn't the issue, it's RB and JR's and thank goodness, despite their defenders, it is still deemed unacceptable by the vast majority of the general public to slur so publicly somebody's previously unknown name.

komododragon · 02/11/2008 20:47

JR and RB are shock jocks. If one doesn't want to hear their sort of broadcast, one doesn't listen - there is an OFF button. Most folks didn't listen to their broadcast. Of those that did listen, two people complained. The other umpteen thousand complaints came later, most of them fuelled by the media outrage about this very boring story. The only shocking aspect of this is that this c**p has taken over the front page from real news.
