pisses me off that it is always next to the hello Kitty and Pooh Bear stuff...

LOVE the idea of bolshie Vicars.

rachaelsara · 22/05/2008 18:40

Good.

I explained a bit about the playboy brand to my (then) 10yr old. She doesn't want it any more.

I think it's diabolical and disgusting to target children with a brand which is entirely sexual.

southeastastra · 22/05/2008 18:40

go tim! he was on the news this morning, i think he said he pulled all of the stock off the shelves and was told off.

Oh he was on the news this morning.
Thank goodness someone has highlighted this. I have always found it very odd and quite depressing.
I know a mother of three with a playboy sticker on the window of her people carrier . She has two girls and that actually makes me a bit sad.

katz · 22/05/2008 18:41

i was surprised by the people in the street interviewed who didn't support the view that playboy wasn't for children.

Xposted SEA...

southeastastra · 22/05/2008 18:42

yes but did you see that bloke's wife she didn't look that amused did she katz

Hulababy · 22/05/2008 18:43

I hate Playboy things aimed at children. And also annoyed that they always have it with the rest of the children's stuff as well. So tacky and inappropriate. Cannot understand hy anyone would go out and buy Playboy items for their childen, knowing what Playboy is all about

Good on him - nice to see him taking a stance.

Vivace · 22/05/2008 18:43

Well, that's very whipping the moneylenders out of the temple, isn't it? Good for him. True spirit and all that (as long as he is doing it because it is exploitative and cynical use of children and women in general, not because it is sexy per se).

ruty · 22/05/2008 18:44

i think the fact that he is a vicar and doing it mainly because of the moral issues of pornography skews the real argument, which is the misogyny of the playboy symbol and the subsequent dishonesty of aiming the brand at young girls.

Quadrophenia · 22/05/2008 18:46

what I find depressing is that fairly educated friends have no idea how inappropriate it is to let their child have play boy stuff. When did it become ok?

He's great isn't he? I'm all for it, but I'm sad to see those other shoppers so unsupportive.

Roobie · 22/05/2008 18:48

What sort of moronic parents let their kids have this stuff? I saw him on Breakfast this morning and thought he was great.

misdee · 22/05/2008 18:51

who fancies going to whsmiths (who i belive stocks this crud) and filling baskets of the stuff, then taking it to the manager saying its inappriate to be sold to children.

edam · 22/05/2008 18:52

Excellent. Misdee, I think you could be onto something there. Must take a look in my local WH Smiths.

tbh the only way to get it across that its wrong and so so wrong, is to take a stand like this vicar.

am sick and tired of it being peddled to kids.

southeastastra · 22/05/2008 18:54

yes lets join tim's campaign.

Greyriverside · 22/05/2008 18:57

Is there any other connection between the items and playboy aside from the logo? does it have naked women on it? phone numbers to meet like minded people?

I'm cynical enough to doubt the motives of the people selling this stuff, but I think we should keep it in perspective. If the vicar thinks buying a kid a pencil case with a bunny on it is grooming then he needs to get out more.

katz · 22/05/2008 19:14

greyriver - the point he's making is that children see the bunny as harmles but in fact it stands for the degradation of women.

Blandmum · 22/05/2008 19:15

Good for him

morningpaper · 22/05/2008 19:17

Greyriver, would you mind if your children had pencil cases with swastikas on? I mean, it's only a SHAPE, right?

I heard this chap on the radio and thought he sounded FAB

Hulababy · 22/05/2008 19:17

greyriverside - it is the fact that we, as adults, know that there is the link. And we, as adults, really should not be encouraging our young children to have items with a logo associated with pornography. We are condoning Playboy and all it stands for if we buy it and give it to our child. And we are telling our children it is acceptable too.
